Evgenia Medvedeva to train under Brian Orser

Orser understands the emotions that led to Tutberidze’s critical comments about Medvedeva when the Russian coach learned Medvedeva was ending their working relationship after 11 years.

Orser had reacted similarly about Yuna Kim’s decision to leave him after she won the 2010 Olympics. They had been together four seasons.

“This transition, it’s always hard,” Orser said via telephone Monday. “I had a hard time when Yuna left. I had a hard time when Adam (Rippon) left. You take it personally as a coach. You’re disappointed and sometimes you get angry.”

Yet when he first talked with Medvedeva about the possibility of their working together at an April 22 meeting with the skater and her mother in Seoul, South Korea, Orser was concerned about the way Medvedeva would address the change publicly.

“The first thing I spoke to her about was, `They (Tutberidze and her coaching team) have done something right, and you need to be grateful,’” Orser said. “You are here (as a 2-time world champion and Olympic silver medalist) because of them.”

More from Hersh's talk with Orser about this change in his latest blog, here:

This is from quite sometime back so I'm not sure if the situation has changed since then? Was she forced on a much stricter diet after 2016 Boston because she was going through puberty?

I know nothing about Evgenia's diet, but I remember from one of Darya or another Eteri girl's instastory that there is no place like a dining room at the club as they are supposed not to eat. What's OK but... some of them stay in the club for many hours (8 and more) and I really don't know how they deal with the rule.

I think Orser could quickly improve her technique by scrapping some of the unnecessary tanos that are maybe making some of her jumps smaller.

There are more problems there than that...

Med is not slow. She is not fast like Osmond but she is light on the ice and not laboured.

She is laboured, though. She doesn't really use her core, or ankles, or knees to create movement. And she does do at least some transitions more cautiously, if not slowly. Why choreograph those into her programs?

That's a bold statement. I have hard time seeing Russ Fed doing anything to her. Unless you're talking ISU.

To be honest, a lot of coaches(bosses) in any sport(jobs) are a-holes. Athletes just endure their coach because they like the sport more. Do you think you would be offended if Eteri was yelling that way at boys playing football or hockey?

Raf, said something in his interview regarding Medvedeva is that the hardest thing for her will be the cultural differences in coaching styles. She is probably going to have to change her off ice training and nutrition habits as well
According to one of the documentaries, the hockey players from where they train were scared of Eteri and convinced she physically beats them. It didn’t sound like the hockey players were joking the way they presented it. So yeah, I think we would have a problem with football/hockey players being treated this way. She is doing something that they find scary.

I doubt she’d be banned unless she was found to engage in physical or sexual abuse. And even physical abuse probably wouldn’t be enough. I could see Rusfed sanctioning or punishing her in some way if her athletes continue to have problems that impact their success. Particularly with the nutritional regimen, they should not have Eteri involved in the girls diets, they can afford to bring in a nutritionist.

I don’t think it's humanly possible to skate those famous 10 runthrough per day without eating.

Individuals with eating disorders are amazingly resourceful in finding ways to accomplish what they need to while still eating as little as possible.

Dont know how true is, but I heard she does not eat too much, the BOrsers are known for having a balance diet, and Brian mention that his training methods are short but though, if she want to keep up she have to eat

Why they stop eating? dont you need enough protein and calories to be able to jump? never make sense to me
I have a feeling Eteri’s own disordered eating and issues about control are projected onto the girls. It doesn’t make sense. I suspect Zhenya lost a lot of strength in her jumps due to not eating sufficiently. I believe she said she’s is not allowed to eat after 6 pm or that she is just allowed tea. Alina said something similar in her Japan interview. I suspect they have been coached about what to say regarding food to avoid raising alarms.

The thing is, if they refuel the correct way they should be more effective and also not necessarily putting on weight. She was likely burning muscle for fuel. I don’t know why rusfed hasn’t brought in a nutritionist given how important this will be for the junior girls jumping quads.

Surprising that you think that all those parents, other coaches, choregraphers, Sambo-70 director, Rusfed, let Eteri beat those children without saying a word or act. Or maybe she beat them secretely in a closed piece with nobody knowing?

I have to agree with it. When Zhenya is not under pressure or 'fit' (video1, video2) she seems to make -3T combos better (as well as control the edge and all her jumps are lighter). However her 3lo is one of the best in the field, even haters can't argue with it, so it was always mystery for me too...

So I see two main reasons why they never risk:
1) It's crazy inconsistent (which is still strange to me as if anyone can do new jump with the first try on official practice without preparation than I mean you can maybe at least try to put them into the program :cool14: especially if you can't repeat 3Lz....)

Or 2) They should have to try it during her 2d season, but it was against 'agenda', cuz RusFed needed to keep 3 places for Olympic season and the new that Anna P. and Masha S. are not stable....(but still even if they didn't try to change layout in WC, why would they not try new elements on World Team Trophy, it was nothing to lose there...It would be interesting to see what layout Alina has for next season; she said they would focus on consistency but who knows now....)
Because her team thought that she could win only with this, if we consider the huge WTT 2017 score.
Eteri thought that the judges would never give Alina huge PCs so fast, so she gave her a program that would make all her TES arsenal shine, so she would have guaranteed a Silver in the best of cases.
Evgenia is more balanced in TES and PCS, so "it was logical" back then, not to push the TES so much, because there was "enough security" in her PCs.

Eteri didn't see it coming. To others, with the issue of the injury it was impossible to put more backloading (since the first season was tried). And Averbuk´s Fs "Leftover" with layout 1/6, was not working.
That's why they changed Daniil's EX program, Anna Karenina with the usual layout (by the way, Zhenya did NOT choose Anna Karenina, Daniil choreographed this as an EX, and recycled it as FS).

She has an excellent loop, maybe Orser sees this, of course he focuses on the SS and the quality of the jump, but a little combo with loop at the end of the season I do not think it's that much risk (;
------------------
***I think I'm one of the few people who enjoys Averbukh's choreography, I really loved the 2016, 2017 programs. It was all so unusual and contemporary. Averbukh uses elements of Contemporary Dance, and mime is part of those elements. And it's not the first time we see this in FS, Yagudin in his FS 2002 used this resource. TAT was a visionary.

Beat??????????????

Well some doctors do recommend early dinner.

I have no eating disorder and certainly I´m no skater, and my doctor has recommended that I eat before 7pm every night, as to have 2 to 3 hours digestion before going to sleep.

And just for information I always eat between 7-8pm

"Recommend" and "being not allowed to" are different.

yeah but its different, are you an athlete? valid question, non-athletes people cant compare them-self to athletes, they waste way more energy than us, cause they need it, they eat more protein and fiber, calories, to have enough energy to go through their exercises, they need muscle mass to jump, you cant do that not eating

EDIT: I mean, is not like they are going to ea junk food, just healthy food, and in a balance way, and I didnt mean past night, but like the whole day, how good they eat, I always thought she looks to thin

even so, is not that crazy to have an early dinner, so this is a no issue in my book.

If they are allowed a healthy diet if they eat early is not a bad thing.

And obviously my doctor only recommend, I´m an adult woman that work in the office, not an elite athlete.

Beat??????????????

Again if there evidence that they are not eating? If they eat the protein, fiver and calories that they need we can cry abuse.

Etery has done crazy things in the past week, but is not fair to accuse her of things we have no evidence of, like her starving her skaters.

Do you mean there's no cafeteria within sambo-70 at all? That's horrible if this is the case as I understand sambo-70 is also a sport school for many other athletes other than figure skaters too.
I might have been mistaken but I was watching the Japanese documentary of Zhenya and spotted this scene, I thought this is where they can get a light meal while they are at the club. https://imgur.com/a/8nc1JWm

I was talking about athletes, not about her, thats what an athlete should eat, never in my comment I say "thats what the russians eat":frown:
