Evgenia Medvedeva

I'm behind the time, but I've just seen the clips of Zhenya with Enbert, and I am thrilled. I knew she'd be amazing, but what comes out in the still photos is even more amazing, because they show her magic with expressions, not just facial, but also with movement.

Sorry to ask, but I couldn't find the answers in the past few pages of the thread. (1) when is the Karenina show? and (2) Is there something happening with Howl's Moving Castle, or was it just a photoshoot? It's one of my favorite movies, and they caught the characters perfectly!

New interview with Zhenya and Grazia magazine:

"I often look at the dresses of my colleagues": figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva on her favorite performance costumes, rivalry, comparisons and motivation

21-year-old Evgenia Medvedeva is one of the most successful figure skaters in our country, two-time world and European champion, medalist of the 2018 Olympics and just a beautiful girl who motivates and inspires everyone around her. This summer, Evgenia, together with Nestlé Fitness, created a collection of basic sweatshirts specifically for the #Fitnessfood project. We learned from the athlete how to train ourselves to exercise with joy, and also talked with her about motivation, strong character, rivalry and constant comparisons with colleagues.

GRAZIA: Evgenia, you have released your own collection of hoodies, the inscriptions on which urge you to exercise for pleasure. It's no secret that many girls find it difficult to instill in themselves a love of sports. What would you suggest? How to learn to love sports?

Evgenia Medvedeva: I am sure that motivation and pleasure are in the process itself. When you get high from what you love. There is a long way to go to the first medals and awards. Preparation takes a lot of time, great efforts are invested every day. This is definitely not about the “here and now” result. Therefore, high expectations are the first step towards giving up. Seeing how girls demand too much of themselves and, without achieving quick victories, abandon hobbies, we, together with Nestle Fitness, launched the #fitnessfood fun project. Their philosophy is very close to me. Therefore, since March, I have been actively telling and showing by my example that the path to the goal is not only for medals and awards, but above all - for pleasure. The hoodie capsule is one of the cool results of our collaboration with the brand. First of all, I want to convey to the girls that you need not look for motivation from the outside, but listen to yourself and reward yourself for the smallest victories and achievements. I came up with the idea of making the inscriptions mirrored, so that every time passing by the mirror, the girl would feel support and be charged with faith in herself. There is a great deal of power in us. It's time to believe in it! To everyone who is just starting to play sports, I can advise you to do it only at the call of your heart. Praising yourself for even small successes is an integral part of the road to victory. It is also very important to practice not for show or approval of others. Believe me, this is pointless! Who is just starting to practice sports, I can advise you to do it only at the call of your heart.

GRAZIA: Sports rivalry is familiar to you firsthand. Does the constant competition at work affect your privacy?

Evgenia Medvedeva: Sports competition only hardens, because when there are so many rumors around, you simply stop paying attention to any speculations and concentrate only on what is important to you. On herself. Over time, I learned to abstract and enjoy every moment, so I try to share my personal life with my work life.

GRAZIA: All winners have a desire to prove that you are the first. That is, you need to be persistent, purposeful, and be able to stand your ground. Do these qualities spoil your personal life?

Evgenia Medvedeva: Any of our character traits, habits, behavior patterns inevitably leave an imprint on our personal life. This is as much a part of me as my love for delicious food, music, dancing, and the Luna toy, which I consider to be my talisman. Therefore, it is simply impossible to exist apart from the will to victory, perseverance, dedication, or any of your other manifestations. You, too, do not give up your dream and do everything to make it come true? Here I am, absolutely the same living person!

GRAZIA: How do you feel about the constant comparisons with colleagues in the shop, about discussing your “common” or similar outfits with other skaters?

Evgenia Medvedeva: We are all constantly compared to someone. If you delve into your memory, you will surely find a comparison with the "daughter of a mother's friend", who, for example, studied better or baked charlotte more deliciously. With sports, everything is similar, but even more complicated, because every appearance on the ice is almost a fashion show. I am pleased when people like my outfits, but I myself often look at the costumes of my colleagues, because this is part of the image. To an untrained viewer, it may seem that figure skating is only about jumps and outfits, but in fact, music, movements, and even facial expressions decide. When the image is fully formed, art begins. It's very cool that people around you notice it! I am not at all offended by comparisons.

GRAZIA: Are figure skating costumes expensive?

Evgenia Medvedeva: All costumes are sewn for one season for a specific program. It can be a little more expensive or cheaper. The cost is due to the fact that this is manual work, a large and very painstaking work of a designer. Just imagine what it would be like to sew about a thousand beads on an outfit ?!

GRAZIA: Can you list your favorite costumes? Are there any memorable stories associated with them?

Evgenia Medvedeva: It's very difficult to decide, but it's probably my favorite dress from the Memoirs of a Geisha program, in which I performed in the 2019/2020 season.I can also remember the white flying dress, in which I presented an exhibition performance to the song of Billie Eilish. By the way, a funny story is connected with him: once before going out on the ice, I accidentally added bandages to my hands and knees, which in the end perfectly complemented the image. And, of course, I can't help but mention my image in Ilya Averbukh's ice performance Anna Karenina, where I play Kitty. This is a truly unique costume, stylish, a bit avant-garde, but certainly immersive in the era. A real work of art.

GRAZIA: What life hacks can you advise on keeping the perfect make-up and hairstyle? You always look perfect on ice!

Evgenia Medvedeva: I take care of myself every day and I can't imagine life without my usual beauty routine. I love a variety of treatments, from face masks to an evening ritual with a night cream that I never miss. I started using decorative cosmetics very early, at the age of 10. At the call of my heart. I still can't stop! You should always prepare carefully for going out on the ice. It doesn't matter how old you are - 6 or 18. Therefore, the love of makeup is born at a very early age. The bright make-up is part of the number's DNA, so it is impossible to imagine that the beam would crumble or the arrow would flow. To avoid this, only professional brands with mandatory fixing (spray, varnish) are used.

GRAZIA: What qualities of character distinguish true champions from ordinary athletes?

Evgenia Medvedeva: In any business, hard work, dedication and luck help to achieve success. In a good way, you should always know why you need to take this or that step, what it will give you later and whether you really need it now. If all the stars converge, then the ultimate goal will certainly be achieved. The main thing is not to forget to have fun in the process and enjoy it!"

So, the GP assignments are out now and Zhenya‘s not among them. It was to be expected but I‘m still really sad. I always expected her not to make the Olympic team in the end because the competition‘s just ridiculous but I never would have guessed that she wouldn‘t even compete... This sucks, especially because it‘s clearly out of her control, what with the pandemic messing up her plans and then those injuries + illnesses.

Still, she‘s a legend no matter what and she has a right to choose what‘s best for her. But I have to admit it will take me quite some time to come to terms with it. It shouldn‘t have ended like this.

She seems happy and this all what matters. It's sad, yes but it's not a surprise. I have to admit that I didn't expect her to return to competitions. And I rather see her at shows (if that's what she wants) than struggeling against the young girls with their quads. She deosn't have to prove anything anymore.

After this season, I didn‘t expect it either, there were just too many factors. I could (and tried my hardest) to ignore them in isolation but together they formed a pretty telling - and sad - picture. And yet! As a fan, I still hoped. I mean, even now I‘m like: "But what if she gets Rostelecom TBD?!“ knowing that she won‘t. Realistically, I‘ve known it all along. But I still had hopes for at least one farewell performance, say, at Rostelecom. But it is what it is.

In the end, I do agree with you. What matters is that she‘s happy.

I'm also devastated but at the same time I'm proud of her. I think she realized that health is more important than anything. She's been through so much last year, no competetion is worth it to ruin your body.

Yeah no matter what happens, she's still Russia's greatest ladies skater even without the olympic gold. Her achievements are hard to surpass.

But, I think Zhenya is still capable of achieving so much more. I just wish the RusFed gave her another chance.

Like didnt they want to see how Zhenya is now that she is back to Eteri???

I think they would have given her the spots, had she asked for them. Honestly, there‘s no way they wouldn‘t seeing as they didn‘t even fill all the GP spots available to them! She‘s likely still battling her health - remember, she was in hospital only a few months ago.

I can only wonder what could have been.. if no pandemic, no return to Eteri and she stayed with Orser. I feel really sad too but I think she is in a good place for her (she looks so happy in her pics/vids) and she can choose to return later on if she wants too.. definitely a loss for competitive figure skating though.

I'm so sad. I really wanted to see Masquerade and Allegria. Allegria at test skates was so inspiring. She has so much more to show us. I think she still can make a comeback.
But I think 2020 was just so disheartening for her. And health is the most important thing and I don't want her skating injured anymore.

As long as she is happy, that is all that matters.

Well that might be true. She seems ok in the shows but that doesnt mean she is back at her pre pandemic state.

I just wish she makes a comeback later on. So many excellent new skates who are so much better technically. But Zhenya is irreplaceable. She skates so differently. Full of heart and soul.

I hope she will skate at a late challenger or the TBD at Rostelecomm. She probably is not at 100% and Sept comes fast. And her skating is so emotional, she's in a league of her own.

I called this in a post a few months back.

It was obvious her comeback chances were decreasing the more she was doing ice shows and getting lucrative endorsement deals.

And I don’t blame her one bit. Let her make her money now and not have to put her body through the rigors of competition.
