Evgenia Medvedeva

I teared up when Evgenia teared up. I could feel her passion and hard work through this performance and her emotions afterwards. This Olympics were expected to be her coronation, it's crazy how unpredictable sports can be. She's so graceful after coming second though, like true athlete she is. I've said so many times but I have so, so, so much respect for her, she's truly one of the most incredible competitors in history of this sport and actually in the world. I can't help but think that what would be if she upgraded her content like she wanted to at the beginning of season (I like this one more but to win you have to keep up with youngsters because they will keep coming with more and more) or she didn't get injured...I feel sad about think about these because they're indeed pointless, she did the best she could do and I truly could feel it. I'm glad to hear that she wants to keep going; competing and improving.

She gave it her all, did the best she could and actually came close! Nothing more she could ask of herself.

You cannot fight the system, especially not when the system has decided in advance that Zagitova would win. It is what it is. Nobody said life was fair. Last night, for me, Zhenya was a clear winner and when the initial disappointment passes, I hope she sees that. She seems to have gained many fans and good will though, so hopefully her family's smart in how they handle her from now on.

I said it in the FS thread, and I know it's not going to happen, but for her, the best road now would be to leave Eteri. They did her zero favors this year, if anything, they're a big part of why she lost. Now, with all the juniors coming up, it's just going to get worse. So she should find herself someone who will help her out in the future and who can politic for her, alone.

Anyway, she may not have won an OGM but she sure won in all the ways that counts. Well done Zhenya, well done.

You guys I am sad she got silver medal but I am not angry? Like I felt I would be. I am happy she was able to perform a clean skate after the things i had seen this past season. I am happy that she is getting support from people all over the world especially since so many fs fans bully her to no end. I am happy for her. Let's see what happens....

I agree with everything but the coaching change. Who could do more for her in Russia that Eteri can't? Eteri's getting a huge rep for ladies and that's a good thing, I think

Buyanova? CSKA power, but hasn't done anything for Radionova or Sotskova
Goncharenko? left CSKA and no official home, taught Radionova weird tech
Panova? mainly teaches novices/juniors, no good programs for her girls, no experience in coaching at major comps
Rukavicin? no power, doesn't really encourage personality in programs
Mishin? too old-school to given Zhenya the layouts she needs to be competitive and would never allow her to do a 3A or a quad...

besides, Zhenya and Eteri have such a good relationship...

I agree. Eteri is the best thing for these girls, and honestly there wasn’t “much they could do” considering she was injured and healing is something you have to do on your own

Who says she has to stay in Russia?
It's a moot point anyway, she'll never go but while yes, they have a good relationship that doesn't actually help Zhenya one whit. Did it help her get the OGM? Nope. And realistically, this was her one shot at it. It's just how the sport is. It's just going to get worse from here on.

Rusfed loves their skaters stay "in house" so it must be a russian coach in case of change if she still wants her fed's supports. For reasons Spirals listed, there's no better alternative other than Eteri unfortunately.
It's quite a blocked situation I'd say. Unless her fed opens up about their "in house" policy and she finds endorsements to support her financially to go overseas.

There's no competent choice in Russia other than Eteri.

Buyanova, Panova, Goncharenko, Mishin... Their students are all failures in one way or another.

I also don't know how you could possibly blame Eteri for this. Especially from Evgenia's point of view.

I think Eteri is the best coach she could ever have.
And when someone is looking for an easier way and can't stand competitiveness in a group.... it always ends badly.

There's just one coach who is on Eteri level. Brian...
But ......... we can all see that his work with girls..... hmmm.... not so good....:sarcasm:

Eteri is the best coach for girls in Russia, but if Med seriously going for next OGM she should change team. Because her chances will be higher if coach has her as only one candidate for Olympic gold and not two or three much younger . And for next four years Med may take a season break to update technical base with no rush and pressure. If she will stay in this team she have to give the best on every start as usual and won't last very long.

Oh I can blame her very easily because she is partly to blame for what happened. It's not as if Alina is someone who came out of nowhere; she is from that very same group. Eteri knew how to game the system perfectly to get Alina into the position where she could contest for a medal, which ultimately got her the OGM.

But if she knew to game the system, then she also must have known all the issues this would cause Zhenya. Yet what did Zhenya get? Bad programs. Not enough technical work ever since last season. Eteri knew that the way the trend is now; Alina's PCS would go up with her TES, that is what she counted on to get Alina up there after all. Could she be blamed for the Fed dropping Zhenya? No. But the rest is entirely at her door.

Next season Zhenya will still be around but after that? More juniors are coming up. That's the issue with Eteri - she is a state coach. And as the Russian federation couldn't care less beyond the next kid who'll churn out the gold for them for that season, Eteri isn't in the business of building legacies. This is why Medvedeva needs a coach who will focus on her as she gets older and politic for her, not Alina v 2.0. 3.0, 4.0 etc. Of course, it's all just empty talk as even if she wanted to, I'm pretty sure she doesn't have the money to pay someone like Borser, even if he said yes and RusFed certainly wouldn't want to.

Dancers have trained overseas without losing the Fed's support (not that it helped them, but that's another issue).

I have the awful feeling (please correct me, tell me I'm wrong) that Zhenya is "one and done". They're not building legacy skaters in Russia anymore, like they did with Irina (and tried to with Maria B.). The last three OG teams from Russia had zero holdovers. This is turning into gymnastics where they go guns blazing for one quad, have one single shot, and then retire.

I am hoping that Zhenya gets lucrative contracts to skate in shows, especially in Japan where she's obviously beloved. I have a feeling she'll be fine, but she will need time to think of her future and build it. She is well-respected in the skating community and has two Olympic medals, not too shabby.

Zhenya will always be The Tsarina of figure skating to me. I'm hoping she sticks around, or at least returns in perfect form if she decides to take time off. She deserves to relax and regroup.
