Evgenia Medvedeva

Also, does TAT have leftover skate ornaments for Tracy to hang up her tree next Christmas? These questions are perplexing.

I hope Tracy knows what's coming

I like Tracy so I‘m happy with the decision. :) Now it will be interesting how TAT and her interact.

I can see TAT’s post on Instagram in her garden showing something to Tracy. Both are wearing Russian furry winter hats. There is the description “Olympic and World medalist. Beautiful skater and now coach taking care of our Zhenya! Thank you Tracy for everything!”. Actually I read it in my head with TAT’s voice

I'm reading some Russian sport-oriented press and forums and it looks like the RusFed quietly prepares everyone to accept the fact of Medvedeva participating in WC-19.
Many various comments about how she's good (sometimes the old whining for the lost Olympics added). No critics allowed.

Unfortunately neither of two other top ladies (Zagi+Tukt) may run for a medal.
Medvedeva could be a good choice. Would she reach 1st-2nd place she may continue to skate. 3rd - unlikely. Below = retirement.

I'm looking at the same press and I think you're mixing up cause and effect. Rusfed isn't planning a conspiracy to place Evgenia on the Worlds team. There's just a chance for her to go, because of how uneven the second half of the season has been going for everyone except Sonya. And because Zhenya's one of the most recognizable names in Russian sports right now, the press jumps at every chance to write about her and journalists run and ask every last person who means something in figure skating about her going to Worlds. That's all there is to it. No critics allowed is... arguable.

And the forums? The forums have been in an overdramatic frenzy since the Olympics. The fan wars aren't going away and people take any reason to fill another 30 pages discussing if Zhenya was robbed or if Brian destroyed her career or who owes whom flowers.

Fact is, it's highly unlikely for Alina to get taken off the Worlds team. She's 95% going unless both Liza and Zhenya lay down crazy good performances and even then it's questionable. Sonya's a 100% go. The final spot depends on how Liza and Zhenya and maybe Stasya perform at the Cup. And that's that.

I don't really understand what you mean by 'no WC = retirement?'
Are you talking about what the media will think?

Because I personally think not going to Worlds this year isn't the end of the world for Zhenya at all. It would be great to see her again if she's ready, but if she isn't I wouldn't count her out!

I hope Evgenia and Tracy go to Russia early - she's the only one who has to travel from overseas to participate, so she's the only one who will have to deal with jetlag.

Also, she has a training rink in Russia now, so please go early!

It‘s just a blatantly stupid theory that missing Worlds once or failing to medal will result in the end of one‘s career. While, if we look at it, it is just wrong. Alina‘s still skating, isn‘t she? And she did miss the podium last year. Zhenya‘s in a position where she‘ll have to fight hard for spots on the team, that‘s what happens when you‘re a Russian skater. But she‘ll get GP spots for year to come, given her reputation, even if she struggles. She can and should skate as long as ahe wants to. It’s just insulting to imply that a skater‘s career will end just because they have one season where they struggle. The media’s doing it all the time, I don’t get why we as fans need to do it too.

Alina had a bad Worlds last year? Oh, she’ll retire and run away with her OGM. Guess what, she did not. She‘s still here, still fighting. Serafima Sakhanovich is still around and she‘s had far less international success. Those girls love their sport. They want to continue. Let them please without any conspiracy theories. If they won‘t anymore, they‘ll tell us. Just look at Liza - how many times have people already proclaimed the end of her? Somehow she’s still around. ;)
There’s a chance Zhenya won‘t make the Worlds team this year. Will she have it even harder next year because some great juniors are entering seniors? Yes. Does that mean she has to give up? No. If money will be an issue... she‘ll find sponsors. Orser and her have said repeatedly: they are aiming for the long goal. Whatever will happen in the end, we don‘t know, but I think we can be fairly certain that neither Brian nor her are people to easily surrender.

totally agree with what you said Fluture!

Skaters have ups and downs and their careers aren't over until they decide that for themselves.
It's frustrating to see the same rhetoric that 'failing once' = 'failing forever' on this forum. (I don't like the word 'failing', but for the sake of the point I'll use it)

in any case, I'm looking forward to the Russian Cup Final to see what Zhenya does. Like you said, she's a fighter and loves the sport, missing a WC won't stop either of those things being true.

I mean, Liza is literally still skating with very good performance and she missed the last 3 Worlds :laugh::laugh: and since Zhenya moved to Orser to have a longer career, it would be incredibly stupid to think that she would retire if she misses Worlds this year. Ah.. the stupid press.

Just leaving this here as an attempt of positivity. They are not “done“. They won‘t have to “retire“ just because someone might secretly want them to. They will do whatever they want to do and whenever and they will do it with hope, grace, power and unbelievable courage. And hopefully they‘ll all recover from the troubles they might be facing and show the world their delicacy, charm and soul with a big smile on their faces. :)

I know it‘s not just about Zhenya but I thought the general message would fit in here despite of that. And I‘ll admit it, I was too afraid to post this cheesy mess in the Russian ladies thread.

Btw: I‘m looking forward to seeing our absolute favorite, “power“, skate again at the RCF :)
