Evgenia Medvedeva will use the sign language in her Free Skating
The Jr World Champion of 2015 Evgenia Medvedeva prepares for the first senior season. That 15-year-old pupil of Eteri Tutberidze told about her new programs and the purposes to the season.

- We are more than a year spent pre-season training on the federal Novogorsk base, - told Evgenia. – I arrived there after holidays which spent in Thailand and Spain. The collecting took place from June 10 to July 18. Every day we had two ice practices on an hour and a half, three once a week we had a choreography, also we have engaged in all-physical and special physical preparation. To the end of the collecting I skated the full programs including all elements.

- What is your new short program?
- The short program was delivered by Alexander Zhulin even before my holiday. We already cooperated with him in last season so there were memorable and successful programs. It is very pleasant to work with Alexander Vyacheslavovich, I just reveal from new sides (smiles). This time we chose music from the movie "Melody of the White Night" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKt1RhSrvkQ). My trainer Eteri G. Tutberidze wanted to use it for a statement long ago. This movie tells a love story of a Soviet composer & conductor and a Japanese pianist. I will appear in a lyrical image in which I feel comfortable.

- What have you in free skating?
- The free skating was delivered by Ilya Averbukh in Novogorsk. We cooperated with Ilya for the first time, but worked well together quickly. He works unusually, applying a non-standard approach, it was interesting to me to observe how he is occurred by these or those ideas and how he embodies them on ice. In the first part of the program Dance for me wallis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxO1csWNKmg) by the modern Polish composer Abel Korzeniowski, in the second – Allegro (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05tbnLH5wvg ) by the French self-educated musician Rene Aubrey, in the third – Korzeniowski's Charms (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbdhaOvB0a4) sounds. The statement turned out unusual. We touched upon the subject how it is important to hear each other, to speak language of love to life which is clear to the whole world – the sign language. We tried to inform the viewer how it is important to share the inner world, to open, to give the heat. My program is a flight of dream, a flight of fancy. Do you know how many of people have a hearing disorder which are deprived of opportunity to enjoy such miracle as the figure skating? More than two million people! We want that someone from them saw this program – and understood it. I was positive to this idea. If I am not mistaken, before in figure skating nobody used a sign language. It is pleasant to me what we made very much, I fell in love with this statement. The choreographer and the dancer Igor Strelkin who participated in the First channel’s project "Tantsui" also worked on this program. He speaks the sign language. Igor picked up and put the movements which I will speak the sign language. Ilya involved him on purpose that I could feel the program better, could convey its intent.

- Do you plan to complicate new programs technically?
- At the moment I have no complications in the program. We work on new rotations, we are improving, we look for something original.

- What purposes do you set before yourself for the first senior season?
- After a gold season in juniors I’m adjusted very ambitiously. It’s madly interesting to me, after all I will come to ice and to compete with famous figure skaters which performances I watched on TV being the child. Before the Grand Prix stages there will be a competition at the beginning of October - Finlandia Trophy in Espoo (Finland). Also it is important to me to reach the final of the Grand Prix and to make a successfully skate at the Championship of Russia – to be selected in the national team to the Europeans and the Worlds. These are my main objectives (smiles).

Ilya Averbukh: Zhenya Medvedeva’s free skating is an innovation, nobody in figure skating did do anything similar

- We worked with Zhenya Medvedeva for the first time, - Ilya Averbukh told. – It was very interesting to me. I hope, our cooperation will be long and successful. Zhenya is the person who hears me, works at a maximum, puts something special in the movements which I show. It very much imposes to me that Zhenya trusts me. I consider her very talented and gifted person, besides she is very hardworking. Everything that it’s possible to say good about work with the athlete - is possible to say about Zhenya. Of course, we have a long way. I hope, results will come. Zhenya has a huge potential – she can shoot in the senior level already in the new season, she can qualify to the national team to the Europeans and the Worlds.

- How was the production process?
- I put programs quickly enough – also quickly as I put to Yulia Lipnitskaya, Lena Radionova. The most difficult is to find an image, to help that all happened. We delivered Zhenya’s program during the collecting in Novogorsk – approximately within a week.

- Who chose music to the free skating?
- We took three compositions. It’s not a hit, not popular music from any soundtracks. Partly we risk a bit because to enter the senior level people often take more popular stories, safe hits. But it seems to me, Zhenya will perfectly cope with this program, she has something to tell on ice, she can realize this music perfectly.

- What is idea of the program?
- The free skating of Zhenya Medvedeva is an innovation, earlier anybody in figure skating didn't do anything similar. Zhenya is faced by a complex challenge because the idea of the program is very difficult in the description, it is easier to bring it to hearts of the audience directly with a skate. The idea was born from music which I heard. I’m waiting that it will lead the viewer. The main thing that the elements were entered in the program organically, didn't distract. We long worked on it. It’s important to Zhenya to fly all the program by in one breath. I am sure that the statement will have a big life.

- And what’s the innovation the program has?
- There the sign language is used in this program, Zhenya tells on it some phrases. But the program is not about people with a hearing disorder, in this history it’s important that all of us speak different languages, but the sign language is equally clear around the world. Our program – is a big message for everyone: let's hear each other, let's not be closed. At the beginning of the program Zhenya keeps the music in herself, we hear what just plays inside her and at some point she tears off her hands from her ears – and the music as if escapes from the depths of her soul, rushes into the hall, and we hear that occurs inside her. It, of course, frightens Zhenya a little as everyone is afraid to open his own world. And then she closes the ears again – and the music disappears, lives only in herself. But she has something to tell all of us – she tears off her hands from her ears without fear and tell us some phrases in the sign language that she would like to fly as a bird. I hope that she will fly by all the program quite so (smiles). It is the main idea, it is philosophical. The main thing is that we don't represent any specific character, but we address to a very hot topic. Zhenya manages to give it to the audience very well, she flies, she hovers over ice.

He seems to be extremely impressed with their collaboration, with her hard work and ability to correspond and understand.
She is the only skater he worked with this season. It sounds like their program def. has something to say, and Averbukh says Jenya works on maximum to show it.
With all that said, it seems like she may have an amazing season! Looking forward to it.

Actually, they won their World title with their CD and OD, as Virtue/Moir won the FD then. Anyway, I believe that there are many people who think that Delobel/Schoenfelder's 'The Piano' FD was much better than Virtue/Moirs 'The Umbrellas Cherbourg'. I didn't think so then, nor did I think that later, but probably I would think differently if I watched the two FDs one after the other now.

If you talk about choreography, then I think D/S had better choreography, but technique and connection and performance quality it's V/M.

Semantics. They needed that program to win their world title, did they not? No FD = no world title.

Regardless, it was a virtual tie in the FD with Virtue & Moir anyway.
