Evgenia Medvedeva

I think even if she doesn't have any personal sponsors her club might have some. Sambo 70 is really popular, has powerful skaters and is a brand itself. Also she designed skating clothes for one of companies so maybe she gets this kind of cooperation :)
I've always liked Russian skaters and after Sochi I think like the majority of fandom expects me to feel bad about it :( I really hate when on chats people are cheering on Mai or Satoko or Ashley and later Evgenia skates and I'm too afraid to openly cheer on her. And it's not fair because she worked so hard to be where she is. In one of interviews Eteri said that Zhenya isn't natural jumper or spinner so she had to work harder than girls who were somehow more gifted.

(I love Yuzu too but his flip even now is far from being perfect. I guess he considers jumping/training all kinds of quads but quad flip :D )

I also saw on her documentary that not many people in Russia recognise her. I wonder why, because isn't figure skating a national sport in Russia? Anyways, I just cheer for every skater, even for those I don't particularly like, because they're doing a sport I could only dream of competing in.

(I always thought it was strange he never mentioned a quad flip... he might get a 4A before a quad flip... but I love him lots :) )

Not to dampen the mood, but am I the only one who didn't see a huge difference between her WTT and world's performance? Perhaps components wise she deserved an extra two points because of her consistency, but technically wise I think she was pretty much the same, but got 4 points more for GOE?

I know that everyone was overscored compared to worlds, but Evgenia is such a consistent skater, I don't think her TES changed drastically since worlds. So I don't really think that WTT scores should really count towards a PB and WR, mainly because other skaters from other countries don't have the opportunity to have their scores 'boosted'. Again, not to hate, as she definitely deserved to win, but I just don't think that her score should count towards a WR.

(Also, did anyone see her slight change of edge on the lutz? It wasn't as bad as it used to be since she's changed her entrance, but I've noticed she rarely gets an ! or an e on her lutz, compared to some other skaters who also change edges. Again not to hate, as other skaters get unclear edges overlooked (e.g Kaetlyn), but I think the tech panel should do edge calls anyways, even if it doesn't really impact the scores greatly)

Her TES went up around 4 points and I thought that was totally justifiable. From a technical perspective at least, it was a better skate and realistically could not have been executed any better. I would've still called the lutz a ! both here and at Worlds, but as others have said it has improved and at worst it's off a flat now, so that would lower her score maybe a point. But technically her skate yesterday was astounding. She added the Rippon arm variations onto both her triple toes, and all her jumps finished the revolutions in the air, assuming the landing positions with great ease. A couple of her landings (I'm thinking the second triple flip, and first double axel) were a bit scratchy at Worlds, and overall she had more speed coming out of the landings at WTT. However, I thought performance-wise Worlds moved me a bit more, but both were incredible.

Brava Tsarina Evgenia!

Am just waiting for a Twitter post by Evgenia of her being home in Russia with that Victor cardboard figure in her room😂

Well the most popular sports in Poland are football and ski jumping but I can only recognise one footballer (because he is in many advertising campaigns) and one ski jumper (because is living meme). I guess in Russia they just treat figure skaters as ordinary athletes. They don't have this celebrity status like skaters in Japan or Kim Yuna in Korea. And ordinary people who aren't involved in sport recognise sportsmen from advertising or holding public function and in Russia they usually don't do it. And finally we have deep field. Evgenia is an ultimate champion but she is also one of many talented girls and it's easier to remember the winner if he or she is the only foundation of discipline in country

So she'd have to have a career like Plushenko to become as popular as him? I guess also there's the fact that figure skating is not nearly as popular as it used to be- the only skater my mum can name are from when she was younger- Nancy Kerrigan and Michelle Kwan. She doesn't even know who Kim Yuna is.

I guess the problem is that in recent years we had a lot of 1-2 seasons long wunderkinder in Russian ladies' field. Maybe fans just don't want to overhype because they are afraid that next champion is going to suddenly disappear:(

And figure skating is still very popular in Russia ;) but more like recreation than like discipline to watch. On the other hand the ice rinks in Russia are full of fans during international competitions and the number of domestic competitions is just enormous

Ahhh thanks for the warning. If she were Japanese or American she'd probablybe swimming in endorsements by now. It's shame bc I've seen a lot of people insulting her nationality, and to think there's the possibility that she can't even compete at the 2018 Olympics bc of the doping scandal, is really unfair.

(Btw I never knew Yuzu used to jump lips!)

Yes, Russia in general does things differently with state sponsorship of skating but I think if she sticks around, and I think she will, and especially if she conquers the OG, then her profile will rise. There's a bit of a trouble so to say with ladies skating and that is the relatively quick change of skaters, one after the other, when it comes to champions. Plushy, Yagudin, and yes, peeps like Yuzuru and Patrick, they've been around for years. If Yuzuru had bailed on skating after Sochi, he never would have had the fans he has now, nor the power to attract endorsements.
So if she holds, I think she can potentially be huge, and not just in Russia, but world-wide because Olympics due to their nature offer a far bigger platform of fans who tune in just once every 4 years. And she's coming in as at least a 2 time WC, EC, GPF winner (and probably more).

(he did! he has corrected it now and his flip is good, he is very, very quick on take off, it's kind of interesting to see in close up how he's fixed it. And yes, a quad Lip would be funny but considering he's landed a rotated 4A already, yes, that is far more likely he'll do first. He gives us headaches. Honestly, I am not surprised he and Zhenya get along so well, they're both driven, eager to improve and hard workers who never stop).

Yeah, like Liza :( I wish she could come back with her 3A- I enjoyed her skating...

So I guess the sport is watched more for fun than taken very seriously like football (some the football fans in the UK are... very devoted)

Yeah, I think its a shame that so many ladies skaters retire so early compared to the mens. The only veteran still competing is Caro (and Mao until she retired. I literally cried when it was announced :( )

But then doesn't Zagitova goes to seniors next year? I think she is a serious threat to Evgenia, especially with her 3lz-3lo combo. Once she moves up and thus gets higher PCS, I think Evgenia will also have to try out new combos because Zagitova already has higher TES. I'll be quite excited to see them compete against each other. We'll have to find out if Russia goes to the Olympics late this year or early next though

I hope she will do combos end with Lo next season.

and cross my fingers for quad...

She should really take it easy with quad sal. I'm worried about her a bit because of pressure she already has. It's Olympic season. The most important for her to work on her new programs and stay healthy  However knowing her temperament I'm sure she will try it hard, then fall, then get angry, then fall, then get more angry and work on it. She never gives up.

Zhenya isn't the one who decides whether the scores count or not, so moot point.

She used to Flutz. She's worked on it though and now her Lutz is a ! She gets called on that, Skate Canada, TdF, and GPF and Europeans both had the ! call. I am kind of tired on people overlooking this due to worlds that had quite a few problems overall.

SC protocols

Thank you for bringing this up! She is really attacked on a daily basis on instagram and youtube because of her Lutz. Some people apparently don't have life and use their free time to attack 17 yo girl. I once answered them that they should turn their concerns to judges instead but got no reply. Cowards!

They all seem to be so tense and funny ))) Katya was incredible today as a captain!

This competition just keep getting better and better!

Thank you for this link!

She was practising 3Lz-3Lo successfully during practice before Worlds. And 3F-3Lo too I think. And 3-3-3 ended with 3Lo. I just guess she has never changed -3T to -3Lo because she didn't have to

Hi, thanks for your input :) I agree with what you think about performance- maybe because Worlds was a more serious event, I found her program there more moving? And my original post was on the wrong thread, so sorry about that, but thank you anyways for replying.

It would be nice to see her attempting new combos. Do you know any russian ladies than are training a 3A?

her ability to jump 3-3 is phenomenal. if some jump didn't work she can add a combo to any jump. any combo.
She did jump rippons last year. I remember video before WC2016. But she hasn't been 100% ready/confident/stable with them. till now.
So when she will be 100% confident about her -3lo. She will add it.
I read (after GPF2016) that Eteri thinks Evgenia isn't ready for -3lo. Eteri is a smart lady)

for me her jumps are stable. So many combos without errors. for Eteri? who knows) However knowing Evhenia's temperament... ))

I know that Liza Nugumanova was training 3A off the ice. Also Eteri mentioned that she had girl in her group capable of jumping 3A

Evgenia is just like Yuzu. She won't try anything on the field until she is 10000% sure it will work. It's why I think we won't see 4S anytime soon.
