Evgenia Medvedeva

Hmmm, to start a discussion...what is your favorite Evgenia program, and why?

This is a rare case but my favorite program is "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close". Part of it is because I live in a country where terror acts happen once too often and I understand the feeling of going to work and not being 100 % sure that I will come back and see my family again... So every time she skates that program I completely forget about BV and technical aspects and I feel immersed in her story. And the look in her eyes when we finishes it makes my heart freeze for a second...

Zhenya is nominated by Sarah S. Brannen for Icenetwork's person of the year. This article was really pleasant to read; it has perspectives from different skaters and coaches on how incredible Zhenya is. Also, write something on their twitter post. I think that's how they determine the winner.

Thank you for bringing it!

you're not alone)
For me too. I'm in love with this program. personally, I think she did a marvelous job and I'm thankful that she did it. I did not find it offensive at all as it was done tastefully.
I find that she incorporated all the emotions that I personally feel sometimes just leaving the home every day. The horror, the heartache, the despair, the panic in losing a loved one, the relief in knowing they are safe. That I'm safe.
It is shocking performance but done very elegantly. it gives me so many different feelings and emotions...

An interview with Eteri Tutberidze: http://fs-gossips.com/eteri-tutberidze-during-the-work-pity-does-not-help/ (very interesting)

Some Q & A
But Zhenya Medvedeva knows everything. Or it seems so?
– She knows. Knows exactly . She is the most disciplined sportswoman in terms of “get the task – fulfill the task”. This does not mean that she does not ask herself “Why?”, “Is it right?”, “Was I offended?”. But Zhenya has exactly what I’m talking about – the right parents. Who create her such leisure, such life, which allows her to train productively when the it’s hard for her. For example, she came from competitions, feels tired, but you can not sit and think “Ah, how tired I am”, you need to find strength in yourself. And here the mother and grandmother join, who at some moment will talk to her strictly, support her in other moment. So our joint efforts lead to the fact that Zhenya finds the potential and begins to train hard again.

But isn’t Zhenya in the zone of discomfort, seeing girls jumping quads every day? Or Zagitova, who in a year, very likely, will also want to win the Olympics.
– Zhenya has competition all her life. Once with Polina Shelepen, who was much stronger than her. Then there was Julia Lipnitskaya. Then Serafima Sakhanovich appeared very close. Zhenya always fought for attention to her as an athlete on the ice. Therefore, this competition is quite usual state for her. Of course, it adds some kind of nerve to trainings. But … let it be.

** She also discussed about why skaters like Yulia and Serafima Sakhanovich left.

Now I know why Zhenya is so special from other girls. It is because she always works hard and fights to be the best not only to overcome others but herself also even if she is tried or her competitors are stronger than her. I respect this girl so much.

I really hope that the gold medal in Olympics will be hers. She deserves it so much.

I kind of wish for her not to paticipate in a Olympics team event. I am afraid that the story might repeat itself :slink:

I hope that she will win gold too as she has worked so hard over the past two seasons, no one deserves it more than her. Whatever happens she to me is already an Olympic champion; she has the quality of a champion. As for the team event, Zhenya is different from Yulia. The supports and expectations from fan don't pressure her but only spur her on, and from the many interviews I have read, I sense that she is a very optimistic person. She also has some team experiences, and I trust that Tutberidze will prepare her well.

With that said, IMO, the team event should take place after the individual events.

I think she will definitely want to take part in the team event. But I don't think that what happened to Yulia will happen to Zhenya (and I hope it doesn't). Zhenya will be 18 by the time the Olympics come around, she will be mentally stronger than how Yulia was in Sochi simply because she will be older. Yulia's popularity and pressure on her shoulders skyrocketed in a matter of weeks, while Zhenya has already been at the top of the sport for a couple for seasons now and will be better used to the pressure. Zhenya won't have home ice pressure. And Russia has a more solid and consistent batch of girls now than 4 years ago (when the Fed didn't deem Adelina solid enough for the team event), so Zhenya can afford skipping one of the programs and leaving it to one of her teammates.
(I really really like Yulia btw, and one of the saddest thing about this Olympic cycle was watching her struggle :( I don't mean it as a way of bashing her but stating that general conditions out of their control will probably be more favorable to Zhenya than they were for her)

I think Zhenya is generally stronger mentally than Yulia. When she entered seniors everybody was calling her next one-season Russian lady and figure skating fans were just waiting for her to make a mistake. It's enormous pressure and she dealt with it. I guess it might come from the fact that at the beginning of her training she was average student and probably nobody thought she would be World Champion one day. People who achieved success harder way are more tend to not to break under pressure.

I agree. According to Tutberidze, Zhenya is not gifted in jumping or spinning, and so she has to work hard for everything. Therefore, she is used to these type of hardship/pressure and learned how not to give up after a failure. I guess this another situation of hard work over giftedness?

I am just kind of worried when the judges put her above everyone else too obviously. It might create more pressure once Olympic comes.

If overscoring and haters are what you're referring to, I personally think that she deserves all those scores. With the quality of her jumping and performance, not to mention all of her bonus methods, the score should be in the range of 150-155... if not higher... There will always be haters with their pathetic and straight out hateful reasons no matter what she or anybody else does, and she understands that and glad that there are more supporters than haters. Therefore, it shouldn't pressure her, and she is used to these type of hate as she has been getting it since her first competition as a senior.

He says "I've got to point out, 'cause I just watch her but I see these tiny little ankles with these humongous skates on the bottom, but goodness me don't they do a good job for her!" He's just used to smaller boots.
