Q: Is it alright to expect good performances if your body is in good condition?
Y: Evgenia Medvedeva in ladies is able to skate cleanly in any situation. Regardless of of peaking or not peaking at Worlds, she can skate at that level anywhere. And then at the end, her performance was so high-quality that she got a season’s best at the end of the season. I think that’s something valuable. Anything other than clean is a failure for her, so without a doubt there is pressure on her. Being able to skate cleanly continuously in that situation is incredible, and I think I have a lot to learn from her mental strength. It’s easy to say “I could’ve won if I didn’t make any mistakes” but that’s just fiction if you can’t do it during competitions, because then what would happen if nobody made any mistakes? That’s not something anyone can answer, until it happens in a competition. I thought that if I had that much confidence I would be able to win, and that I had to continue to strive for that quality. Of course I put pressure on myself, and even now I’m putting a lot of pressure on myself, but I think that’s good, and unless I’m able to overcome that, I won’t be very effective at the Olympics.
