Evgenia Medvedeva

I have just found out the news about Medvedeva and Orser and I couldn´t be more happy.
Now things are going to be really interesting in ladie's singles. In this Olympics i found the competition between the two russian ladies a terrible drama (the men's was worst, I know) and this is very good news for everyone, for Zhenya looking for her own path, for Eteri's girls without the drama on the top, for russian ladies showing that there's competitive life over 18 years old, for TCC incorporating a top skater and for FS fans, we all want to see a lilttle less of drama (this is FS, there will be drama anyway) and more quality and development of the skaters.
Whatever the outcome, this is excellent news!
Go Zhenya!!

- Medvedeva won the world championships two years in a row. What exactly, in your opinion, can make it stronger, give an opportunity to take one more step forward?

"First of all, it's her body." The body is the main tool of any athlete. It must be strong and well prepared. Do you know what is important? That Zhenya is a very young sportswoman, she is only 18 years old. But this is the age when an athlete should have the right to his own opinion, he must understand that he is as full a member of the team as any of the specialists working with him. I know well the goal of Medvedev - to win the next Olympic Games. On the way to these Games we will have three world championships. Will she win all three - I do not know. I do not have a crystal ball. I only know that now Medvedeva is at a crossroads, and we with our team will do everything possible to help Zhenya successfully overcome this period.
She is perfectly well-versed in many things, especially in jumping. She has a magnificent head, in a sense it can be called a psychological "thick-skinned". Plus, Zhenya knows how and loves to compete. Such a rival is not a gift for the rest. In this respect, Medvedeva very much reminds me of Yunu Kim.
At the same time, I see quite a lot of space in order to make some of Zhenya's riding even more powerful. Yes, it will take time, strength, and brains, but it pleases that Zhenya herself is internally ready for such an adventure. She wants, but for the athlete, as you know, this is the most important thing.

Me right now

P.S. very good interview validating some of our 'questions'.

- The question is different: do you in principle consider quadruple jumps at the level of adult female skating? And is there any sense to strive for this?

"I have no answer to this question." And the crystal ball, as I said, also does not. Perhaps, fortunately. So we all have to wait and see in what way the further development of women's skating will go and whether it will repeat the trends that we see in the male. The only thing I can say with certainty is that the female body is still different from the male. Therefore, the complication is not so fast. Whether there is such purpose - too I can not answer unequivocally. With my coaching mission, I see, first of all, the development of women's skating. I think the best examples in this respect are the riding of Caitlin Osmond, Gaby Daleman, Carolina Costner, Kim Yun. These are the names that remain in history.

I hope Zhenya isn't still set on doing quads. Orser seems skeptical if ladies doing them.

What did you feel when Evgenia Medvedeva offered you cooperation?

- At first I was surprised when I received such an offer from Zhenya. However, as is known, at the start of the new Olympic cycle, many figure skaters make certain changes in their preparations. So Medvedeva's decision is not unusual. But I have to say, until I really know Zhenya very well and now I just have to find out. Again, I was incredibly surprised by the proposal.

- How did Medvedeva get in touch with you?

- Zhenya recognized my number from someone I knew or colleagues and contacted me by phone - wrote a text message. She knew that I would attend the tournament in which she participated. We agreed on a meeting to discuss our possible cooperation. This meeting was held, and we talked for a long time about Zhenya's goals, about why she wants changes. She admitted that she was in love with figure skating and did not want to finish her career. Medvedeva's goal is the next Olympic Games in 2022.

- What do you think about how Zhenya performed before the Olympics in South Korea?

- Eugene - an amazing sportswoman. When we talked with her, both agreed that she had a very successful coaching team to this day. Zhenya is incredibly grateful to Eteri for everything the coach has taught her. The first thing she told me at the meeting: I'm not going to say a single bad word about my coach and this situation. And this causes respect. Zhenya is adult in every sense - both physically and mentally.

Zhenya learned a lot under the leadership of Tutberidze. Eteri did an amazing job. Every coach now wants to be like Eteree - she has trained so many talented athletes! As a coach, I respect Tutberidze very much. It's just an amazing contribution on her part to women's skating. But at the same time, I understand that Zhenya wants change. For her coach this is a very difficult situation - she brought up the champion, and she decided to leave. So in due time there was also with Julia Lipnitskaya, and it was also not easy for Eteri. At the same time, I would like to note that I would very much like Lipnitskaya to come back and again become successful.

I emphasize, I understand Eteri's emotions very well-I had many students, and similar situations also happened to me. It's always difficult. But to all the students who have left me, I have always desired only the best. Medvedev does not finish her career, she wants to continue to ride, she only changes the movement vector.

- Did you sympathize with Medvedeva when she missed the first place at the Olympics?

- I do not even know what to say, I'm not a judge and I can not evaluate the performance of athletes. Alina Zagitova, who won, was also amazing and deserved to win. Both performed magnificently. I can not say that I was upset that Medvedev was only the second. Zhenya did not make mistakes, she did an excellent job. But now, Medvedeva feels that she can do even more. And he wants to make certain changes in his skating.

- Who will be the producer of Medvedeva's programs?

- Put the program for Zhenya will be David Wilson. Work under his leadership will be something new for Medvedev. Also it must be taken into account that she is a girl, her body is still changing. Now the most important thing is her health, and we will work on her physical preparation. And psychologically Zhenya is very strong, she gained confidence while still working with Tutberidze in Russia.

"Your alliance will be very interesting cooperation."

- Yes, I agree. All this is a huge change for the sportswoman. I understand this and I want the best for Zhenya. She always did the maximum, performed beautifully, but now she feels that the changes are ripe. Zhenya wants to move forward. She made her choice and wants to be successful in the future. I worked with many young athletes, but Medvedeva has some amazing magic. All the coaches in the world noticed this.

- How important is it for you to preserve the individuality of the athlete?

- I do not have so many students, and I try to develop my own personal style of teaching for everyone. So the approach that I apply, for example, to Yuzuru Khan, will obviously differ from how we will work with Zhenya. The same training with Khanyu is different from the work we are doing with the Spaniard, Javier Fernandez. They are different people, different personalities, and we need to work on their individual style.

I want to do the same with Zhenya, but only preserving and developing the experience she already has. I do not have so many students, and I have the opportunity to pay attention to such details.

- How do you assess the jump arsenal of Medvedeva for today?

- She is one of the best performers of jumps in figure skating. Evgenia has an amazing technique, just fantastic.

- You are the first foreign coach to which the Russian figure skater leaves.

- Figure skating is evolving, it is developing. I like figure skating and I want athletes to do everything perfectly. I want to see them developing and growing professionally. And it's not about working only with the best skaters of the world. I have a Japanese, a Spaniard, Koreans, Americans, now a Russian. I want to see how they all open their potential.

- It's no secret that Zhenya is friends with Khan. Do you think this friendship will help the coaching process?

- In our club we create a truly strong community, which includes both athletes and coaches. When you train alongside the strongest, something very special happens.

- How many hours do you plan to work with Zhenya per day?

"I have to get her out on the ice and prepare the body for the loads, I think this work outside the ice will take a couple of weeks." We usually train for two and a half - three hours on the ice, but maybe more for a start. It will take more time with David in terms of choreography. It will be different than Medvedeva's. I have ideas about where we need to start.

- What do you think, what challenges are waiting for Medvedeva?

- She still stands for Russia, she will represent her club, and we in turn will do everything possible to make Zhenya achieve her goals. She intends to win the next Olympic Games. Before them there are three more world championships, and I do not have a magic ball to predict what awaits her. But I think she is very encouraged by such changes.

We must remain competitive, we must become heroes, and I immediately say it will not be easy. We will work, we will do it differently, we still have to work hard, and Zhenya is ready for this. She knows how to work, she knows that this is not easy, and is ready for it. And I will push it, if necessary. Sometimes it's hard, if necessary, everything happens.

- Do you believe in the longevity of women's single skating? To the next Olympiad, Genet will be 22 years old, and on the world arenas very young people shine now.

- Some changes in the rules, probably, would be preferable for Medvedeva. Although I'm sure that she is still young even by sports standards, she is only 18 years old, she will be 22 years old for the games in Beijing - this is normal

Her muscle :eekn:

She is maybe tiny but strong. Also, Brian said 'they will look make sure her body is healthy and ready for work'.

I was thinking a lot about her 'edge'. Personally, I doubt it's even possible to correct, however, I heard that if you do not train jumps for some time and after learning them again, you can learn it correctly. That's was also Meagan Duhamel suggested in TSL as a possible approach to correct Satoko constant UR: 'train doubles for two months, learn correct technique and after try triples'.

As Zhenya didn't jump due to injury, maybe there is a chance that they can reprogram her muscle memory, we saw some better edge during her practice already (praying it can be fixed as she badly needs it )

What do you guys think?

What do you guys think?

Eteri mentioned once that Zhenya tends to loose form very quickly, even her rest day would lead to problems on the next training day. So, maybe this pause from jumping could actually help her re-learning the right edge. Honestly, I don't except any magical results this season, because I am just realistic and as Brian said it will take a lot of time and adjusting to the new training methods. But I am very happy that she'll work on it, she's very aware of her weaknesses and will try to improve them. Love her fighting spirit :yahoo:

I feel like it will never be completely outside edge like say Boyang's lutz but you know what? Very few female skaters do it on a very deep outside edge. Even those who do it, the edge is very sneaky:slink:. I hope she ends up doing it as her first pass considering a lot of skaters who struggle with it, do that.

I can't wait for the next season!
I discovered figure skating during the Olympics (and more specifically with the ladies free skate that I watched by chance  ) and I was totally stunned by Zhenya's AK, so I really was looking forward to see her skate again, but with the events of this week it just became so much more interesting!
