Evgenia Medvedeva

Thank you so much for this!

If any kind Russian-speaking or Japanese-speaking soul could translate what she says, it would be awesome! :)

I can sum up what she says in the second one:

The program (Windmills of your mind) has no special meaning attached to it, it's just a beautiful program and she hopes people enjoy watching it. She also thinks this is the last time she skated to it.

Her goals for the upcoming season: stay confident and calm and just pursue her goal. She wants to be the best version of herself.

Right now she's focusing on strengthening her body and preventing further trauma in the future.

And the last bit: "I know how much you guys worry about me and I appreciate all of you so much. You give me confidence to believe in myself and I hope that my skating can raise your spirits at least a little tiny bit and gives you inspiration to do something new. Because the most important thing for me is that you enjoy my skating."

Thank you, you're an angel! :2thumbs:

I'm so glad she's focusing on building her strength and being healthy!

Also, does the bit in bold mean we're having a new EX soon? :hap85:

You're welcome! And yeah, I take it as a confirmation that this won't be her EX for the season and we'll be getting something new instead.

Reading this I just wanted to confess something. For my 20-something-years I have never been into (professional) sports - I never liked doing any team sport at school, nor did I enjoy watching it on TV. But I remember when I was little that my mom watched sometimes figure skating when it was broadcasted and I was sitting next to her absorbing everything. 2 years ago I accidentally found a fs-video on youtube and I guess, I remembered that once I was enjoying it (as a spectator) so this is how it all started. Figure skating became my only favourite sport and Evgenia - my favourite athlete. At that time I thought she was very talented and everything but later after reading many comments and also making my own comparisons to other skaters, I came to the conclusion that she's not that talented. However, she's (for me) still very successful and worth admiring because sport is not only talent but also discipline, hard work, right attitude etc, pretty much everything else that Evgenia has in her character.

Her goal is of course the Olympic gold but at the same time she's so real and down to earth, and I believe her when she says that she always tries to reach to the spectator through her skating and not just perform, get the points and the medal and then disappear.

So, what I am trying to say with all this is that for me, she already has achieved that. Not only her skating but also her attitude lift up my spirit. I find myself currently in a tough situation where I am making first steps in terms of working experience. It's extremely difficult because I have to deal with my thoughts, whether I am made for the job or not. But then I remember Med's story - so many people not only on the internet, but even her own (ex)coach telling her constantly that she has no talent in this field while competing with many other far better skaters. And at the same time she keeps fighting and proves wrong. This doesn't happen only in sport, this is the real world and I find it fascinating how a 18-year old who you have never met can teach you about life. :thank:

Probably several. One thing that isn't talked about all that much is how often she comes with a new Ex. It's admirable I think.

Thank you for sharing your story, and good luck with the job hunting!

I would disagree with the statement that she is not talented. Yes, perhaps she's not the most natural jumper (though her salchow and loop are gorgeous), etc but she has an amazing capacity of connecting to the audience and reaching people's hearts. That's a huge talent, in my view.

Definitely! She came up with several EX while she was in between coaches, without a proper rink to train, and getting her jumps back after an injury. She is amazing.

Saying that she isn't naturally-gifted at figure skating might be a better way of phrasing it than saying that she's not talented, but I'm sure that's what esteticlove was driving at, and Eteri has said that in the past. Zhenya isn't a prodigy; she's not Mozart, she's a hard-worker who excels at the sport despite lacking a special inclination for figure skating. She beats all those girls who have a natural gift, a knack, an innate talent for it because she is coachable (Eteri said that she soaks everything up like a sponge), she works hard (hard enough to be the lead example for the rest of the coaching team), and has incredible mental fortitude. Maybe that's a gift, that mental toughness she has, but as far as lacing up a pair of skates and stepping onto the ice, she came out of the starting gate just an ordinary girl, and I think that makes her even more inspiring.

I think she was born with the right looks and body for figure skating and as you mentioned with the right competitive mindset. That is also a talent. I also think that although she wasn't born with the skating skills of say Marin Honda or the jumping skills of Alina, she does have her own unique style of expression. She is her own skater, and not trying to imitate others.

i want just one but well-choreographed Ex (by bourne haha) next season c: so she could develop and polish it like a competitive programme during the whole season

Agreed. Also there's gifted and then there's Gifted... I don't believe for a second that she's not naturally gifted at figure skating at all. Success of her caliber can be reached only through monumentally hard work, of course, but it wouldn't be possible without some natural talent either. Maybe she's not as much of a natural jumper as some others, but that's relative.

(And as an aside, I'm a bit sceptical about claims of her lacking talent because I don't remember hearing them from Eteri before Evgenia's injury. Correct me if I'm wrong. First time I heard it from her, was in the Japanese documentary about Evgenia's injury and... well, I don't want to be unfair, but in part it seemed like Eteri was looking for excuses at a point where Evgenia's dominance was in question)

In context, she really had to fight to stand out from a sea of peers. Remember in juniors she was competing with Sotskova, Proklova and Sakhovich, plus Elena Radionova, Julia Lipnitskaya and Anna Pogorilaya who were just one year older. Among that group she was not a huge standout and back in 2013/2014, I think people would have not guessed that she would become the most accomlished amongt that group.

She definitely rewrote the script in 2014-2015.

50Words for Snow, thanks for correcting me! Yes, I was looking exactly for a phrase with the meaning that she's not that naturally gifted in terms of the athletic requirements for figure skating (jumping, speed etc) Saying she's not talented sounds really harsh from me :hopelessness:

I've been thinking on the topic for a while. What does a talent in figure skating means? Because pretty much everything has to be learnt anyway..
For the case of Evgenia I see it so: she has a natural slim body which helps her with aerodynamics but maybe one of her small setbacks is that she doesn't have that much muscle mass to help her generate better jumps (though, this might come with her new team!). However, having good jumping technique is also up to the coach. And as many already said, talent is not only related to jumping. She's a natural performer and this is a talent too, of course she's improved immensely due to her long-term practising but even in her junior years her "acting" looked so real and she was visibly confident on the ice.

She rewrote the script several times. When she won her first season people said she was a one hit wonder. After her injury, they said there was no chance for her, and yet she came incredibly close to the gold and delivered one of the most memorable performances of the Olympics. After the Olympics, they said she would never leave Eteri and/or she would retire.

Now they're saying she has no chance of winning again...
