Guys, educate me and maybe some others here, what are the purpose of the test skates? Are they used for anything?
It was awesome! No, I'm just fortunate enough to live in a place with several fs training centres and an annual summer competition that serves as a nice place to test out programs before the JGP/Challengers. Almost everyone at the competition were skaters, coaches, officials, families, volunteers, or media, so bumping into people is normal, but the timing intensified that further. I think there were somewhere around 60-100 people in and around that one rink (there were multiple rinks used simultaneously) as it was late (Senior Women began between 8 and 9pm, men began after 10pm). So far less people than were around the next day. But Brian and Lee Barkell (both with game faces on) were there at a small event to support Gabby.
Brian, Tracy, Lee, and Ghislain are all seasoned at traveling with and supporting skaters and I'm sure they all learned even more about that after last season. When you think how crazy busy August-Sept are and will be for Team Cricket juniors and seniors, I'm glad Brian and Tracy are smart about delegating between themselves and among the other coaching staff to try and provide maximum support, despite how hectic it can be. Let's not forget that Brian had surgery last fall after arriving in Regina for Skate Canada and was out of commission for some time as expected for emergency gallbladder surgery, so I hope he and the rest of the staff do not push themselves to the point of illness.

They are used to show the RusFed officials new programs and any new elements, and show how ready the skaters are for the season, which could determine the timing of assignments (eg. a skater who is not ready in September won't get an early CS versus a skater who is foot perfect might)

they say the main goal of the test skates is for the skaters to show their programs, to get ready for the season start. The skates help to assess the degree of the athletes' readiness... After the skates there is a discussion of program elements with specialists who give their recommendations - what to improve

I'm really happy that Tracy will be with Zhenya at RusNats. From everything that I read and heard, Tracy seems to be wonderful coach and mentor, and a true people's person.

The transition from USSR to Russia sports federations was a rocky and underfunded time for a lot of sports, and an athlete with forward vision then was likely learning English or French or Hebrew (when applicable) as a way to help land an expat coaching job that would provide a middle class lifestyle abroad and enable them to send hard currency to family members back home. (Gymnastics got hit even harder than skating, and Svetlana Khorkina was the one who pretty much forced that sport to stay relevant in Russia during that time.)
As the new Russian economy and ruble stabilized, sports like skating and gymnastics were better able to operate proper large developmental and elite programs again, and I suspect there were far more domestic job openings for skating coaches and related positions than there had been, and consequently, less need to learn English as a financial survival skill.

Brian said in an interview once that he allows himself a full week of vacation per year where he doesn't have to do anything related to skating but the rest of the time even when he's not actively coaching, he's still working so yeah he's really busy.
Great. It's early and many of my other favorites will be there too. That's definitely an event to watch

I didn't know Yuzu and Zhenya had classes during the same schedule before I saw this interview. I thought men have separate classes? (I heard from Japanese Hanyu fans). Maybe they do skating skills classes with everyone.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Zhenya ends up doing a Snow White inspired EX with the red apple [emoji519], a fruit which she’s now synonymous with. At the end of the EX program fans throw various soft toy animals onto the ice which appear in the Snow White film. [emoji23]
