Evgenia Medvedeva

Why does this make her chances go up? Because Mako would've had Silver+Silver but Sofia will have Bronze+Silver? Doesn't that put Zhenya in the same position- if she gets Bronze+Silver, then she needs the highest score of those who got Bronze+Silver (Sofia, Kaori)

yes, but it's still in Zhenya's hands if she gets a high score at IDF AND can still afford to get a silver, while Mako getting two silvers would have forced her to win to beat her.

Because depending on how well Sofia does in the FS Evgenia can get away with a lower score to get into the GPF with bronze and silver. Depends in how well Sofia does and how much extra points she gets for home country bonus. Sofia got 198.7 at SA. If she gets e.g. around 205 at RC, Evgenia only needs around 206 at IdF not 213.

Mako getting a silver would have forced her to get at least a silver in France with a score above 213.90 (I believe) to beat Kaori and get in the final. If Mako doesn't get silver (unlikely now), Evgenia now has the option to beat Kaori and Sofia's total score, not just Kaori. If Mako gets bronze she will just need to beat her total.

Let's see what happens tomorrow. Maybe some more doors will open for Zhenya in terms of points, etc. I still want her to achieve that score of 213+. Luckily IdF is the last event so we will know by next Saturday. Phew....

Correct me if I'm wrong. As it stands right now it's currently

Definitely in:
Satoko: 1+2
Liza: 1+3
Alina: 1+1 (likely)

Possible:
Rika 1+? (as long as she lands on the podium next week she's in, which is likely)
Kaori 2+3
Sofia 3+2? (I think 2 is her highest possibility here and most likely scenario)
Mako 2+? (it would be difficult for her to finish on the podium here, but not impossible)
Evgenia 3+?

Am I missing anyone?

You got everyone. Everything will depend on how well Sofia and Mako do at RC and how well Evgenia does. Just a week left. Omg

Barring anything crazy happens at RC tomorrow, Zhenya will have a chance to get in the GPF next week. Could be easier or harder depending on what happens tomorrow, but I'm glad she'll still have the chance. I'm sure she's super focused and I can't wait to see her compete next week

Konstantinova, maybe? In theory, at least... she was second in Helsinki.

Not nationalistic, patriotic ;) (If you didn't know, "nationalism" is strongly associated with racism, xenophobia, fascism, etc.)

Definitely did not mean that in the exclusivist context. Patriotic is a good word to use.

NHK and Rostelecom are probably igniting the fire in her belly even more.

I am excited to see how much she improves from Skate Canada. I was a little worried that her coaching team have been away too much during this interim, but then again, these are professionals - they have done this many, many times. They know what to do.

Tracey has probably been working with Evgenia the past few weeks.

We know she needed to work on spins and hopefully Tracy is helping more with polishing the programs.

I think Paige is the spin coach at TCC. Does Tracy concentrate more on the stroking technique, while Brian focuses more on jumps and the overall program?

We know that Zhenya will arrive in France ready to compete. I’m praying for two clean programs. It will be a huge boost for her confidence.

Well I would think that Tracy also does overall program stuff because she is accompanying her to Russian nationals. Understandably she probably doesn’t do the jump technique like Brian.

Tracy is a coach, yeah. She’s equal weight with Orser, and she leads the edge class, which is everyone trying to outdo each other in skating skills. [emoji23]

True.

Am I the only one who is a little frustrated that while EVERYONE is so obsessed with how Evgenia has not fixed her lutz edge (after only 4 months of being with her new team) and how she she has received an edge call in every competition so far, there are other ladies who clearly also have lutz issues and not getting called on it? I am not advocating that Evgenia gets a free pass (she has clearly acknowledged that she needs to work on this, and is in fact working on it), but the strict application of the rule should apply to everyone.

Or is this a case of just competitions hosted in North American countries being more strictly judged? Aren't the technical experts all ISU officials (so it should not matter where the competition is - they have the same mandate)? NHK and Rostelecom (so far) seems to be quite leniently judged.

Strict application of the rule? ISU? Huh? What's that?

In all honesty, I think ISU is an organization that doesn't see their own flaws, or doesn't want to act on them.

The overwhelming amount of outrage at Evgenia gave her a reputation as a flutzer, and now she has to deal with it. Which is unfair.

I could rant a lot about how all my faves get called but skaters with more reputation and the same or worse technique don't, but... well...

The ISU kind of just... doesn't care, I guess...

Someone posted here before that the judges didn’t do their job in calling out Evgenia’s flutz before and now they’re choosing to do their job. So yeah, this is partly on the judges. Honestly everyone was complaining about it before but when Janny switched coaches it was singled out and talked about by the media so much I knew that there was going to be negative attention on that jump this season. Old habits die hard though, it’s not going to be easy

Obviously one of the frustrating parts of this sport is the inconsistency in judging. But it doesn’t look like the ISU really cares about fixing that. It would be cool if they could figure out an edge call system like Hawkeye for tennis.

Do the judges use instant replays with some of the jumps?
