I‘m sad and disappointed and frankly, scared. Not because of the score, not because of her sitting in third place. This was to be expected. I‘m even not all that worried about her making the GPF anymore. Either Rika or Mai will win tomorrow, it‘s pretty clear. Rika with her 3As and Mai with her consistency. If Zhenya manages to get into 2nd place - I‘ll be very, very happy. But still... The thing I am most worried about is the state of her mind. We have actually seen Zhenya can do this type of program. At test skates she was in the perfect mood - flirty, sassy, smiling a lot. At SCI even with the mistake it was still interpreted fairly well. Here, however, she seemed so hesitant, so scared and tentative, as if the terrible SP from the last GP event was still haunting her.
And frankly, I‘m just not used to seeing her like this. I‘m not talking about mistakes, like I said, they were to be expected given everything she has changed and is still actively changing this year. It‘s more about how she looks so... scared in competition all the time and on the verge of tears afterwards. Zhenya was always a girl with a mind of steel. But she‘s just human. I‘m afraid the radical change she made that must have been more than scary, the harsh criticism that followed and the high expectations she and everyone else have on her, have got to her in the end. I just hope she isn‘t going to hate herself too much for this. She seemed a bit relieved after realising she had still a chance and I hope Tracy and Brian can talk to her realistically and discuss the possibilities with her.
I think her murder face will actually help in the FS, like it did at SCI. But it‘s not doing it at all for the SP. As much as I like the program overall, I think she should not have opted to do two completely new styles this year. But it can‘t be changed and I hope she manages to achieve what she wants in the end. And slay the FS tomorrow. She needs a silver. Fight, Zhenya, fight with all you‘ve got!!
And if it doesn‘t work out in the end: Your fans still love and support you. We‘re on this ride together. Up and down. Currently it‘s down... but sometime it has to be going up again. If you don‘t make the GPF don‘t be too harsh on yourself, you will have another month to train and another chance at Russian Nationals.
You are strong, Zhenya. But you are only human. Everyone makes mistakes and what you went through is just so much for a woman of your age. Yet you make your own decisions. Like the German Eurosport guys said today:
„She is making her choices consciously. That‘s Evgenia Medvedeva who simply became an adult.“
They also noted that there was a lot of hesitation in the program, that she has tons of things to work on and that it won‘t be easy. But they said she saw why she needed to make a change (Team Tutberidze always having a star with the former one fading away - Shelepen, Yulia and now it would have been Evgenia - and that she doesn‘t want this) and supported it. They were realistic and said Rika will likely beat her with her 3As. But said she still has to fight in the FS.
Come on, Evgenia. Show us the wild animal inside you. You can do it! You just have to believe in yourself and your abilities. Don‘t skate for medals, don’t skate for any of those critics, don‘t even skate for fans. Skate for yourself and the ice like you used to and then everything else will follow. We know you are scared. Heck, how should you not be with everything that’s been going on. Even we as fans are worried. But you will overcome this. Maybe not now, but in the future. Your career isn’t over if you don’t make the GPF. Your career isn’t over if you lose. You can do everything if you just set your mind to it and be relaxed and try to do it for YOURSELF and nobody else. Believe, Zhenya! Because you have it in you. Everything.
