Evgenia Medvedeva

Evgenia is so strong mentally, she can pull a performance out of anything, under the most pressure. I really do not think that is what is causing the problems right now. The new techniques are simply not working for her. Her jumps are bigger, but she does not have control over them. Her 3f-3t combo used to be so consistent, now even in practice it is so hit or miss. Evgenia just needs to iron out her technique. Mentally she is fine and there is no need to gossip about "trauma" and struggling mentally...quite simply the jump technique and consistency, spin quality, is not there right now.

i think it's because of the new way of her practice. when she move to toronto to train with coach brian, evgenia need to start from scratch again.

Hoping Brian has another one of his lightbulb chats with her and we see fighter zhenya for the free!

How can you be so sure? The look she had yesterday on her face was the same prior Europeans and Olympics this year - the first time she was rattled and showed some insecurity in her senior career. She managed to deliver then but now she's making mistakes and I could imagine this is even more haunting than ever.

Brian DOES say he needs 1.5 years with his students. Javier, Gabrielle Daleman and Yuzuru all needed that period of time to succeed.

Going to throw in my two pence

I think we’re mostly agreed that this SP needs to go in the pile of ‘we tried, but nah’. The decision to trial this style on the season where she can afford to be a little bit off is very important for the progression of her career. She can settle into the heavier styles we’re used to seeing (and loving) from her.

For her, it seemed that yesterday it was important she skated clean - at the expense of the characterisation of the programme. It was technical focus. It wasn’t quite clean, but it was a marked improvement from SCI. There she performed beautifully but lost an enormous amount of points technically. In terms of her further career, I’d rather she settled back into her super-serious self this season, regained her confidence, then rebuilt the artistry next season in a programme she’s more comfortable with.

Re. her flip. It is so much harder to change something you are good at. Her axel, I hope she now feels like it is so much easier or more secure (because it looks it!). But her flip and her loop, she could perform very well but they’re obviously reworking to do even better and that’s very difficult. Plus, she must have had in her head that last time she did this SP she fell there.

Personally, I believe what she says. Her teariness was the immediate reaction to disappointment, but when she was talking to Brian and Tracy later in the Kiss and Cry she seemed much more settled and able to look at it objectively, that it wasn’t the end of the world by any stretch. She made large strides since SCI, she’ll take more yet!

One comment on the kiss and cry. She squints because she cannot see the scores well. That is why Brian immediately told her 67 67 67. It's a dead Tie. She looked relieved. Today the short does not matter. The top 3 skaters will podium.

If I didn't watch the SP, judging by the reaction here I'd believe she bombed it. She "just" saved the combo by doubling a triple. Honestly not even a big mistake like at Skate Canada. Don't get me wrong, I had my fair share of dramatics yesterday too and I do think the SP is a problem. But looking at it objectively, this is just a small mistake. I know she wanted to go clean but luckily this SP was a time where she could afford a small mistake. Just hoping she's getting in the right mindset to kill it today!

In other news, I think her 2a was robbed of GOE. A couple of judges gave her +2 when it's at least a +3. I would've given it +4 (a couple of judges did)

Yes, technically the program was better. Looking at the bright side they added more transitions. From here to Rus Nats they really should focus on the step sequence and the spins, and of course building confidence to land the combo. About the performance, it's a shame because back at test skates she looked to be much more comfortable with the sp than the lp. Maybe by Rus Nats she can try at least to smile at the beggining, and then sell it after her jumps. Then, later as the season progresses we can hope she adds the sassiness throughout the whole program.

Good luck Zhenya for the free!

I hope the spins will be ok today. Like honestly, it would have helped her so much if she got level 4s yesterday... like it would have given her the lead, which would not have been enormous points wise but still, psychologically important.

I agree but if we take a look at the bigger picture and compare the GOEs to the ones she got for clear axels in the previous competitions this season, we clearly see that the judges were deservengly "more generous" yesteday..finally! If she gets to the GPF, I expect those GOEs to get higher. And if she nails her double axels at RusNats she should be the second to Liza with highest GoE on the element.

she had kolyada's face yesterday, as white as sheet. it's worse than popping a jump or loosing level on spins.
good luck today.

People are not patient, and it doesn’t help that Russia is so cutthroat. People had no faith in Brian when Yuzu first changed coaches (he was often called a one hit wonder then, especially after Yuna and Adam left and Javi has just been with him for a year I think). Yes, Yuzu already had good technique. But they worked on his jumps, his skating skills, and his stamina (probably the most important) to make him even better...but this didn’t happen in a few months.

There is so much to admire about the things that have improved- her axel!!! Is magnificent (btw the 3A is not Jason’s favorite jump but they both got the highest GOEs on it). Her body is selling the choreography even if her face is not. Her step sequence was cleaner. At least she didn’t fall on her flip this time.

I wish they would get rid of the tanos temporarily though, it’s one more thing to think about and they looked better at SCI

Anyway I just wanted to share this tweet I found from someone who competed at NHK in 1989:
“Brian said to me one day about finishing last. It will happen to you one day and you’ll never let it happen again. I finished last in the short program in 89@NHK. The next day I skated the long of my life and moved from 18th to 7th. You truly learn to fight.”

Right now Med is learning how to fight in different contexts. She is learning what works for her outside of everything she’s learned under Eteri. She is fighting for her career. It’s unfortunate that she has to do it with so much pressure on her.

Do you think that if she continues to improve on the axel she will go for the 3A? She wants to try a 4S but a 3A seems doable for an adult skater, plus she can use it on the SP too. But if she manages to have a 4S and a 3A she would be a great contender if the wonderkids retain their quads (what I doubt but who knows)
