Evgenia Medvedeva

Alright. So it turns out I converted the time wrong. I thought the SP was tonight at 3 a.m. my time. Imagine my surprise when I checked my phone after finishing my finals...

I have not read through the last several pages of this thread, and I'm not sure if I intend to.

But if I know y'all I know that even if you didn't post saying so, we're all a bit doom and gloom on the inside right now.

Therefore, the time has come for "Zhenya Memes and Other Positive Zhenya Content" episode 2. I have been stockpiling for a while.

So many to choose. I could not pick just 5.

So I have 8. My favorites. 4,8,11,13,18,22,28 and 29. 18 is my absolute favorite.

I believe in Evgenia. Sometimes you have to really get knocked down to find your inner greatness.

well one thing that makes me really happy are all those level 4s on spins and sstq! I don't believe we've had so many in the SP before!

Sad day for us. Maybe she can pull Nathan Chen in the FS...
Anyway, I only hope this experience will not plant a seed of doubt in her in her team's minds.
Nah. Orser been thru this kinda thing before.
With Adam Rippon, with Nam Nguyen after his growth spurt. Though we know it ended with them leaving Orser, its different with Evgenia.

Experience wise, this is 1st time they have taken a Russian skater, rather a non Russian coach have taken a Russian skater.

Surprisingly, the other new student Jason Brown is doing well so fast after the bad skate at Skate Canada. Circumstances are different of course but Jason knows how to handle it thus far.

Evgenia does well in practices, so its a mental thing.

I don't want to belittle Orser but he seems so lost and confused. If he believes that he needs 1.5 years to get results with a new student why such reactions to Evgenia's faults when he is on the board. With Evgenia he looks totally different from when he is with Yuzuru. He looks so defeated and not like a coach you can rely on.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, I apologize to all Brian's fans

maybe because he sees how hard she works and what she does when training, and then a completely different person skates in competitions. I mean, how many times has Brian said that he had a 'good feeling' about competitions?

I think that's probably normal for any coach. Coaches are competitive too, they don't want their skaters to lose. I think he's also a probably bit confused maybe because she can obviously do all of these elements in the practice just fine. Just can't string it together just yet. She'll get there.

In fact, I'm not even really worried about today's results. She seems to be at peace with how her career will progress, and capable of coming back. It's a process. What bothers me most is this back pain. I'm so afraid it will be a chronic thing and interfere with her being the best she can be, which is up there with the legends of the sport. It would just be so, so unfair. I want to see her land a triple axel and quad salchow and prove everyone wrong, and I'm worried this injury will prevent not only that, but so many beautiful programs to come. And I'm still holding out hope for a true Windmills of your Mind short someday. We love you, Zhenya.

Interesting note -

TSL posted a link to her skate on their Facebook page, and Doug Haw (who helped "fix" her spins as they mentioned) commented : "Who wants to see a two time World Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist implode like that? The pressure of today’s skaters with social media alone is frightening. May she build the mental strength to overcome her challenges. ❤️"

I might be completely off base so someone feel free to correct me - but maybe Brian is not used to dealing with skaters with mental blocks/overcoming some type of psychological issue? Yuna and Yuzu - the arguably most successful skaters under Brian, both had/have nerves of steel and are extremely mentally strong competitiors. If this isn’t something he has experience with, Brian might be struggling to find a way to get Zhenya out of her head. This is obviously complete speculation but it was something that came to mind.

I don't think Brian realized the true competition in Russia. And the dynamics of training a Russian skater. But he and Zhenya have a good rapport, and I am hopeful the mistakes made this season won't be repeated.

Maybe it's bc the RusFed is breathing down Orser's neck to produce immediate results. It's why he's suddenly started repeating and stressing 1.5 years in his interviews, perhaps to level set expectations.

For someone that helped her to get better - this is very harsh.
Evgenia actually improved from last Season. She just fails to show her improvement in competitions, which is very bitter for her, but that's just the way it is now.
Other skaters have faced similar issues and came back stronger afterwards. Didn't Elizaveta just had two bad Seasons?

One reason is cos Evgenia did well in practices and it's not reflected in competition.

Hahaha, you havent seen the serious or concerned looks of Orser? But...., to Yuzuru's credit, he always does reasonably well in competition, even when injured.
His worst finish was 4th or 5th at 2014 NHK, after the collision. And 4th at 2013 WC, also skating injured.
So, I think Orser's expression for Yuzuru is more of concern of injuries since 90% of the time Yuzuru competes major competitions injured.
