Am I the only one who really disliked that untypical gesture to the crowd? It is so unlike EM and looks somehow cheap for her. It works for Liza, but EM is a performer, an artist who is always in character, so interacting with the audience somehow suddenly takes her out of the character she is portraying. And it doesn't fit tango at all. Besides, asking them to clap is really cringeworthy. The audience should clap when the music, the performance or the atmosphere provoke it; not when you ask them to. Anyway, everything else was great and I hope she won't repeat it ever again. It was probably Brian's idea anyway, because she didn't seem very comfortable doing it. At least she kept the gesture small

It was completely appropriate, especially considering that for the first time this season she was skating for the joy of it and for the audience. She was not skating to win or to prove something. She was performing for an audience. I was more than happy to see her pull the crowd into the performance further, she was performing for them after all.

OMG! When I woke up this morning literally the first thing I did was grab my phone and open YouTube wanting to see how Med skated. As it turned out the video was on my suggestions page so I didn't even have to search for it!

The image for the video showed a sassy smiling Med so I dared to hope for a redemption skate...

And it was! It was so good! It finally looked like a Tango program! I gasped when she fell on the 2-A combo, but that was small potatoes because she sold the heck outta the program! It was a joy to see.

And wow all the flowers afterwards! It was amaaaazing, props to the video people for playing it back in slo-mo! It looked like a movie scene!

Also how hilarious was TAT, she was cheering in the background like a crazy woman!

Zhenya was so happy with her score too and so she should, that was epic! True spirit and determination right there. :agree:

I know some people are worried about Zhenya returning to social media but I see it as a good thing. She learned how to live without it and learned how to deal with what's on it. If she feels a need to, she can disconnect again and she knows that she's capable of doing that. Plus, I think after this weekend she will fully understand that what's said on social media TRULY doesn't matter. She was the most supported skater at Rusnats and that's something real and tangible- mean people on social media are not.

The biggest positive for her "returning" is that the more active and personable she is on social media, the more endorsement offers she will get, and of course the more money she will make

I loved her gesture to the audience- and how happy she looked skating. She clearly felt the love from the audience. I hope she realized that social media trolls don’t represent real skating fans. From my computer screen the crowd looked really engaged in her skate.

I could see why she wanted the audience to clap. By the end of the spins the audience was dead silent again (I know, they became mesmerized ), and she was about to start the step sequence. The audience cheering can really give you strength, and you may get exhausted by the end of the program. Fans at hockey/football/baseball games can really do wonders. Maybe she felt a need for an extra push at that time so that she can shine at that step sequence. I'm up for it! You can be different when you dance tango -- it is all emotions. This time she decided to add a bit of a play, and people there loved it

It was very clear from Brian‘s reaction that he was NOT expecting her to do that, in fact. He was doing choreo with her and closed his arms and she opened them instead and interacted with the audience. He saw that and smiled slightly.

Btw Zhenya has a new insta story and she’s wearing a black, sparkly face mask. No idea what she’s saying as it‘s in Russian, though.

Gala practice starts at 9am local time. It has a weird structure: men, dance, pairs and then women. Women start gala practice at 10:45 am and it should have a live stream. The gala starts at 2pm, after the victory ceremonies (which are at 1pm).

I believe I clearly said "Everything else was great" and also managed to complement her as a true performer and artist. It didn't make sense to me to repeat all the positives that have already been said in the previous posts. Nevertheless, sorry if I broke some forum rule of writing only compliments and never commenting on the tiny bit you didn't like. As you can see, I am new to this forum and not sure if I will stay.

Regarding Brian - he is her coach, he instructs her. She respects him and normally follows his instructions. So, yes, Brian has some responsibility and influence for what she does on the ice, right? Please note that you have used the word "blame", while it became clear that I represent only a tiny minority that didn't like the gesture. Since everyone else loved it, if it was Brian idea, he should probably take the credit, not the blame.

Regarding Liza - I never said that only Liza should do it. I said it suits Liza better and is unlike Medvedeva.

Finally, I don't really understand where the drama and the hostility comes from. Maybe chill a bit?

Please stay on the forum. This fanfest does have problems with trolls, so we tend to get over protective of Zhenya.

I am so, so proud of Zhenya and what she accomplished today. If there was ever a way to end a season then that was it,a good (almost!) clean skate, a million thrown roses and a smile on her face.

She has shown so much growth the last couple of months and seeing that culmination of that during that free skate was nothing short of amazing, she is no longer having to be angry to prop herself up and skate, she is instead genuinely happy to go out there and just enjoy skating and do her best. I'm glad she can see now that people that give her hate aren't important and that they shouldn't dictate her life and I'm proud of her for putting it all out there during that interview (she's a DW fan? as if I needed another reason to love her.) and saying she got nervous during her winning seasons and that she's having to rethink the methods to deal with those nerves and that she's opening up more as a person.

As crazy as it sounds I'm ecstatic that this might be the end of her season, if she somehow makes it to Euros or Worlds I will be more than supportive but I truly do believe that she needs to rest her back and really get into a good rhythm of learning and polishing all her new tools. I really do hope she decides to keep the new SP and the FP, both have an amazing amount of potential which she has proven she can tap and she's done for the season she could really polish them to really become amazing.

Sad as I am that Yuzuru wasn't able to go to Nationals, I am very grateful that Brian got to go with her. I think it was the bonding experience they needed to solidify their partnership, all through the competition they really looked like a solid team. I think Brian's insistence that her progression will take time and effort have finally penetrated her belief that she always needs to win and they are finally getting on equal footing as coach and student. I have no doubt in my mind that they will prove sooner rather than later that they were both right in becoming a team. Honestly though it was straight up adorable seeing them together during RusNats as he looks like a concern yet proud dad.

It was out of character. I think it was combination of being at Russian Nationals and wanting to interact with fans. I hope it doesn't become a habit and I don't think it will either.

I think Zhenya really started embracing all of the TCC changes physically from the start. We can see from the small changes in her technique that she's been working very hard. This weekend, though, I think it's the first time she embraced the changes she's needed to make mentally. Going out and feeling like you need to be perfect and superhuman just didn't work. She went out afraid to fail which made everything worse. Then she went out angry, also didn't work. But for the free skate, she skated like for the first time she knew she didn't have to try to be superhuman. I know from the beginning she's said she understands this is a process but I think this is the first time that she really BELIEVES in that process and completely embraces it. She didn't feel like she needed to be mad about her results, or afraid of them, but she accepted them. Then she went out looking free and did what she could.

I really think this will be the turning point. This was the first step in her new mentality that she really needed. It doesn't mean that she'll never have a bad skate again, but she'll train and compete with a healthier mindset which will make a big difference. If we thought she was improving just from being at TCC imagine the improvements she'll be able to make now that she completely believes in and embraces the process- mentally and physically. This is just the beginning.

I have to admit that I’m glad she’s back on social media for selfish reasons. It was great to see the little snippets of her everyday life that she was sharing with us.

Zhenya comes across as very genuine and relatable in interviews. I think her social media presence just adds to that.

You havent read the Russian Ladies thread yet I suppose. Orser & co are blamed for everything from reworking all of Evgenia's jumps("why must they rework All the jumps at once" )comments, choice of music for SP & LP, changing the layout, choice of dress, etc etc, etc.
Not withstanding those that think Eteri's training method is superior, every fall Evgenia makes is testament to that. And the usual comment that Evgenia made the wrong choice to change coaches, should go back to Eteri.

And.. of course that she is done.

So, nitpicking(yes it is) on a gesture just adds to the all negativity that's already being said. Esp since other skaters do it too, not just Liza.
If you're uncomfortable with 15 yr old En Soo Lim making sensual moves in her Chicago program, ya, understandable. The gestures & moves some of the ice dancers make are even more eyebrow raising I would say.
