Evgenia Medvedeva

“Even though I made a mistake, I am pleased with today’s performance,” said Medvedeva. “Too bad about the Axel-toe, but I had no chance to land it. Yesterday, I was really down and I want to say a big thank you to one person, whom I’m not going to name, that talked to me for one hour on the phone. If we didn’t have that conversation about everything, I probably would not have been able to skate the way I did today.”

Can anyone guess who was she talked to?

No i don't have any idea at all.

So no Euros for Zhenya (absolutely fair) but no Universiade either?? I wanted her to get a medal there or at least compete, she has never been there..

Jason Brown or Misha Ge?

Maybe Javi?

Why do I only see two girls on the Universiade list? And then Zhenya as first alternate?

Because apparently only two are being sent. Maybe they lost the third spot last year? At least Zhenya is first alternate, not second... but that‘s not much of a reassurance...

Do you think if she wins the Russian cup final that she might go to worlds? Has that ever happened in the past? Regardless, I think it would be good to skate there it is almost 2 months from now.
Hard to say. We don't know what Zhenya wants. Getting through the Cup is theoretically possible if there are bad performances of athletes at the European championship. And Eugene is a second alternate for the European Championships and the Universiade.

I thought she is first alternate for Universiade??

I really don‘t want her to go to Worlds. She won‘t go to Euros, that‘s okay and fair. But I absolutely want her at the Universiade. She was never there and it would be her first chance to experience a competition like this... :(

I doubt Stasya or Liza will want to give up the opportunity to complete and prove themselves + get experience before Worlds which is understandable.

I feel like she's ineligible for Cup of Russia and/or has an odd shot of being chosen for it. That's based on 0 facts, I'd love to be proven wrong. Anyone know the process for that?

After watching Brian’s John Wilson Blades interview I am even more Team Orser. He usually trains around 7 athletes, some of which he has the main coach (Yuzu, Janny, Jun, Gogolev, who am I missing?) and others in which is the secondary coach (Gabby, Jason). At the JGPF Stephen Gogolev showed up with Lee Barkell as his primary coach. This was rumored by TSL beforehand who said that some parents were unhappy with how much time Brian was spending with Evgenia.

In his interview Brian explained the situation– Evgenia was struggling with parts of training. When he would tell her to skate by herself for 30 minutes, she would ask “what am I supposed to do?” Part of TCC is learning independence as a part of building confidence and she was used to being told all the time what to do (so like micromanaged). So yes, Brian had to spend more time than he anticipated with Evgenia. He said “I had to take some hits but that’s okay” aka being fired by Stephen’s parents.

Brian has trained Stephen since he was 7, so basically half of Stephen’s life. There has always been pressure on him to produce a Canadian champion (sorry Nam), and Stephen was supposed to be that. So his JGPF victory must have been very bittersweet for Brian. I mean Stephen’s still at TCC and it’s a collaborative environment but it sucks.

Sorry for this dramatic long comment but I teared up at this story. No one is perfect but he is fiercely devoted to Evgenia’s skating and well being, and that’s all we can ask for

I hope it was one of her squirrel friends
