Evgenia Medvedeva

After seeing Zhenya with the new training and nutrition regime... does anyone look at old photos and think "wow... she was SO skinny". I mean, she is skinny and that's good but the difference is unbelievable :eeking:

For a 2019 with more healthy and amazing Zhenya :luv17:

Zhenya is a naturally skinny person. That‘s just the way her body is. However, what she gained this year, are muscles.

Look at that. She is still thin but boy, those are some muscles on her thighs. Someone on insta said: even a person with a fast metabolism can gain muscles and yeah, I absolutely agree. Last year her physique was probably also affected by the injury and the intense Olympic training, that is never a healthy time for any athlete. And she had to fight with an injury too and probably intensified her training to be ready for Pyeongchang due to the lost training months. At the Olympics, she was scarily thin. But maybe that was unavoidable and she couldn‘t have competed otherwise? I think for her, all the struggles she went through were worth it to have that Olympic moment. But still... I’m so glad that she’s now taking steps forward and is finally starting to work with a nutritionist. For an athlete of her caliber, this should have started ages ago. In fact, every professional athlete should, in my opinion, rely on nutritionists and not coaches to inform them regarding their weight an diets.

She is glowing now. Her body finally looks like the one of a healthy, yet very athletic 19 year old. Her legs look like they can withstand the pressure of the jumps without snapping. It will take some time for her to adjust to everything, I don‘t think we can even imagine what it takes to change literally everything in your life. From the way you train and live to the way you eat. For me, in the end it will be worth all the struggles. Even if she never wins anything major again (which I don‘t hope but just saying for the sake of the argument) she will have learned that even as an athlete you can and should listen to your body and support it because it’s the thing that does all these jumps and spins for you when your mind tells it to. I’m aware of the fact that most athletes battle some kinds of pains and minor injuries all the time and that Zhenya is not different. But the most important and assuring thing for me to hear is that she‘s working with a nutritionist. They know best and they’ll help her eat what‘s best and have a weight that’s healthy for her body type and best for the kind of sport she does. Nutritioning shouldn‘t be coaches‘ business because as informed as they might be - and I don’t doubt that they are, they‘ve been working in the field for quite some time after all - they‘re still not professionals and every person is different. I also know that there are still always chances to suffer from an ED, even if you work with professionals. But at least then you have someone who knows what they‘re doing, looking after you.

I’m really looking forward to 2019 and Zhenya’s further journey. Let’s see where it will take us. :)

It's Orthodox Christmas this week. I bet she wanted to spend it with her family in Russia

I think that‘s completely fine. I mean, it‘s not like she‘s going to Europeans and has to train at 110% now. She can take it a bit more slowly and I think spending time with her family at home is what she needs right now, mentally. And she‘s keeping her shape by training at CSKA. She‘ll probably go back to Canada soon, though. I‘d really like to see her at some more competitions but I‘ll wonder where she‘ll go? Will be interesting to see.

Do you think she will go to the Russian Cup Final? An alternative would be the Challenge Cup in the Netherland.

I have never heard about the Challenge Cup, who's going there this season? Russian Cup Final might be a possibility. She didn't qualify through the events but I think exceptions can be made and some skaters can be added. I think they could realistically add her and Liza Tuktamysheva to see their current condition. For Liza, to be able to go to Worlds (Universiade is too late, I think assignments need to be made earlier) and for Zhenya to go to the Universiade. When exactly is the Russian Cup Final? It should be soon...

Both are in the end of February but before the deadline for worlds -25th February. I think she will be given a chance for worlds.

Info about the Challenge Cup.

Anybody think they have not announced because basically, they do not know yet?

I think so. It was the holidays season. Evgenia and Brian probably talked and decided together that they'd need some more competitions this season but that's it. Afterwards Brian went back to Canada and Zhenya had tons of filmings and shows and as we've seen now, she also played a small role in a movie. I think they'll now look into this more closely, maybe Zhenya is talking to someone at CSKA too, to find out which competitions the girls there who did not make Euros and Worlds will compete in. I think her and Brian will make up their mind soon but up to now... I just don't know whether there was enough time.

Is the decision solely on their part though? Doesn't the RusFed have a say on this (this is not rhetorical - I truly do not know)?

They probably do. I have actually no idea. But I think that they'll be fine with her going to lower ranked competitions. If someone with more knowledge about this could educate us, I'd really appreciate it because I know too little to speak.

Zhenya just posted a picture with Carolina on her story and wrote Proud❤️ to it. I have no idea how to put a link of instagram stories in here but it‘s a really cute picture, they both look very happy on it. Caro is one of my favourite skaters after Zhenya and I admire her a lot so it makes me happy to see them getting along so well. And I think Caro can teach Zhenya a lot. She‘s having a long, successful career despite having ups and downs. But still, she always kept going. I think she‘s a great role model in that aspect. :)
