Evgenia Medvedeva

I have a question, I thought Elizaveta was first alternate if some WD, did Zhenya get moved up to first alternate and I missed it?

She is training but hasn't started working on triple axels yet. Sounded like Mishin said it was happening this week. I think the smart thing to do is skip Euros and be 100% for Worlds.

Why is everyone panicking that she's not at TCC right now? I thought we sort of agreed that this year she should take it easy and now everyone is like "BUT WHAT ABOUT WORLDS!??? DOES SHE NOT WANT TO GO TO WORLDS???". Let the woman manage her time as she pleases, I'm sure she has her reasons to stay in Russia at the moment.

Is TAT still on holidays? She acted like Zhenya‘s second coach at RusNats basically. I would not be surprised if she supervised Zhenya now.

By supervised you mean what?

Why can‘t there be a post of her and the coach that‘s training her there for a change? To solve this mystery a bit...

I searched around a bit and I'm seeing the name Sokolovskaya (Samarin's coach) getting thrown around on the Russian-speaking parts of the internet, but I have no idea how reliable this information is or what it's based on.

What does it say? That she will change coach to Sokolovskaya (whoever that is lol) or that it is her who looks after her for the time being? Anyway, I just hope this mystery will be solved soon. Zhenya seems happy and that‘s good. Whatever the reasons are for her staying in Russia, I hope she or someone else tells us soon.

This is a really interesting interview with Jason Brown in that starting in the 4th paragraph he talks about the experience of moving to train in Toronto. What he was told initially about the 18 month period and why. How extremely frustrating it was and why. How what he was being taught suddenly started clicking in France. What Brian and Tracey are like as coaches etc. It is not so much about Jason as it is about the experience which is the same thing Zenia went/is going through. I think for her perhaps things started clicking during the LP in Russia.

That she's training with Sokolovskaya's group for the time that she's in Moscow. Whatever that means as far as supervision from her goes. And like I said, I don't even know where that info came from, so... I hope for reliable info soon as well.

Thanks - this was a great read. This is exactly what I was thinking after RusNats FS.

Giving advice, watching her training, sort of like she did at RusNats. Anyway, Zhenya will know what she‘s doing. There must be a reasonable explanation for her not going back to Canada.

No doubt Medvyedeva has her work cut out for her, and many friends in other branches of Moscow sports to help her with any practice, exercise, coaching or therapy she desires.
She is highly experienced, knows the drills, exercises and daily routine by heart, mind and muscle memory.
She'll have her training diary and notes from both Sambo 70 and Toronto available on her iPad, can call for advice by Skype on any coach from any part of the world.

When she sticks to her present SP and FS, the skating and dancing parts can probably be completely prepared at the Moscow rinks. Going to Toronto might not even be necessary now the Euro's field of medal contenders is quite depleted. I think she can manage her training quite well, and have Mr Orser assist her only in the final prep phase, say a week before leaving for Minsk.

World Championships in Japan is another matter, here the competition will be of a much higher level so different training arrangements will probably be made. Going from Moscow to Toronto to Japan will require considerable adaptation because of jetlag. Mr. Orser and staff will be fully occupied preparing their athletes for the big task, so one can expect Medvyedeva to start training in Toronto like a month before Worlds.

But... Evgenia isn‘t even on the Euros team, she‘s the alternate. Is it common practice for alternates to go to Euros regardless? And we don‘t know anything about Worlds yet.

Yes there must be a reasonable explanation. It's just that no one knows what it is except her. ;)

My bad, sorry. Given the depleted field and the fact that Minsk isn't very far from Moscow, one can assume that Medvyedeva can stay in Moscow and be called upon when the need arises.
Is the ISU rule that registered participants can only be substituted at the latest in scheduled training, i.e. no substitutions from outside are allowed in once the competition has started and a qualified participant gets injured? In that case, the reserves have to train with the contestants I presume and be on standby. Otherwise fly home once the competition has started and continue where she has left off.

Final arrangements for World Championships preparations can be made in February, there is about six weeks left before Worlds. A lot of course depends on fitness, medical clearance and general readiness.
If everything goes to plan we shouldn't have to worry and speculate. Best keep positive and optimistic.

To me, it seems as if she was just recently fully adjusted to training in Canada, so spending a month in Russia with a new training regimen without a coach just seems counterproductive to me. Even if Brian is busy and TCC is chaotic is right now, it'd make more sense for her to be there and continue getting comfortable with the TCC way with her training mates and coaches than to not be there without a coach and a completely new training regimen.

I mean, I just hope there's a good reason. Maybe she has some sort of schedule on that side of the world between now and Euros so it makes more sense for her to stay on that side of the world. But she's losing valuable time with her coaches and training mates and apparently she'll again this season before worlds so this time seems crucial. I don't know, I just hope there's a good reason. "Visting" Euros doesn't seem like a good one.

I think the decision of training in Russia was made after New Year. Doug Haw said on Sunday she was going to be back to Canada by Tuesday, and he talks frequently with Brian, he even contacted him after Zhenya's show. So something must have changed during the first week of the year. I'm not saying it is a bad thing. Just that there might have been a change of plan.

It's also possible that Doug didn't actually have that information and just inferred it from something Brian said to him. He doesn't seem to be the most reliable source, despite having a direct connection to Brian. He certainly likes to embelish things...

Well at least he was right about fixing those spins :agree:

Maybe a visa requirement? If she is not taking part in Euros, could be a good moment to leave Canada. I think Javier and Yuzuru have to leave the country every some time (4 months?), because they stay in Canada with a tourist visa (at least Javier). They spend some time in their respective countries of origin and come back to Canada for training. I don't know exactly how it goes, but I remember reading something about a maximun amount of time per year in Canada?
