Evgenia Medvedeva

It's Ekaterina Kurakova. a Russian figure skater who now represents Poland and is training in TCC

She's got a nice little group now at TCC to speak Russian with. And I saw on twitter that apparently Stephen Gogolev helped translate for Roman Savosin at the small medal ceremony because Roman said his English wasn't good, so I guess that's confirmation that he does speak Russian as well.

I'm sure it's nice for her to have people around she can speak in Russian with, although her English is very good and she's clearly friends with some of the English-speaking skaters like Conrad and Jason at TCC too.

Important part:
I basically am just hoping that people don’t escalate the situation between Liza and Evgenia and focus on what’s important for both skaters right now. I feel like a top five finish at Worlds would be amazing and possible for Evgenia. Also my favorite part of her progression this season is just watching how much her crossovers have improved. It’s one of those little things that have made a huge difference

My long opinion:
Apparently Liza did like some things that were anti-Evgenia but then unliked them. I honestly believe that in the heat of the moment, and especially after a redemptive skate, Liza chose to find pleasure in putting the blame on the wrong person. However, her post about being a naive girl was clearly directed at the Fed and not Evgenia

In my opinion this all Rusfed’s fault for repeatedly telling Mishin to prepare Liza for Worlds and arranging the last minute skate off at RCF after making Liza skate at Dragon Cup too. There are also unverified rumors about Rusfed trying to pit Sofia and Liza against each other too. The unfortunate timing of Liza getting pneumonia (which is pretty serious!) has just snowballed into a whole thing.

I don’t think Liza and Evgenia were or will ever be super close but I think the media and fans will harp on something as silly as a social media follows. No matter if you are a fan or hers or not, Liza has always been sympathetic to Evgenia’s struggles this season. And Evgenia has said that she respects Liza too. They are both fighters. This was a no win situation, it was set up for either skater to be the villain because you could make a case for both of them.

^ That’s unfortunate. Evgenia’s been nothing but gracious.

In any event, I hope Evgenia’s sole focus is Worlds. It’s coming up! I hope they travel early enough? I think it really helped her in RCF that she gave herself enough time to adjust.

I hope so too, it freaks me out when the travel the night before the official practices. Pretty sure they are not doing that for this major trip.

.

The Rusfed statement was clear that RCF is one of the qualification criteria. Zhenya knew that she will skate there since January, it was not last minute. After the illness of Lisa, they had to check her form but I don´t think they send her to the Dragon Trophy. This was the decision of Team Mishin.

I think sometimes it’s done to try and combat jet lag but it also makes me nervous because so many things could go wrong!

Is there a direct flight from Toronto to Narita? Either way I assume she will be taking the train from a airport to Saitama

What a fantastic post Panda! i blame rusfed too. By the way I have a picture of a panda on my World Wildlife Fund bankcard. ;)

I hope Liza is not liking negative comments about Zhenya. She is too grown up to do that. That would hurt Zhenya deeply after Zhenya said such great things about Liza. I know Liza was crushed not to get the world's spot but that's sports. That's life. Can you imagine who won't get the third spot next year? Lol it will be crazier than this year!

I am thinking top 5 is doable at worlds for all three Russinas. It will be exciting dramatic and nerve-wracking.

Scott, I love how you are on a first name basis with everyone - "Sugar", "Panda"

Worlds is always tricky because some years it’s very predictable and other years you really can’t imagine what will happen! I mean, this is sport– you never know what will happen until It unfolds!

I do think of all the Russians Evgenia deserves and will likely receive the highest PCS. I’m just here for the crossovers!

Worlds is unpreictable this year thats for sure.

Hey guys, what do you think about this? I think if Evgenia skates clean, a medal is definitely hers. If everybody skates clean, then the only people I could see beating Evgenia are Alina or Rika. (possibly Lilbet if she lands her quad but I'm not sure how likely that even is!) But this is FS, lol so definitely not everybody will be clean. I guess you could also mention Kaori, but she doesn't get as high PCS internationally. She has similar technical content to Zhenya. You could also mention there could be a home-field advantage, but judging has no Japanese or Russian judges for Ladies' this year. Presumably to curb bias for the top contenders.

I really think Evgenia is leading up towards a clean skate. She is definitely on the upswing. She has had amazing practices, so it's probably mostly a mental issue. But she has seen the love from her fans and has a ton of fans in Japan.

I also thought about it. She could potentially also get gold if she goes clean and alina and rika are not

Well, I hope that Zhenya has skates she can be happy with. If they‘re clean, that would be amazing, of course. As for hopes for a medal, I don‘t even think this is too likely, for now. I‘m a naturally pessimistic person so I will only say: Whatever happens, as long as she‘s happy in the end, I‘m happy too. Everything could happen, Worlds this year is very unpredictable. I still think this is a rebuilding year, so a gold is probably not likely at all. A medal would be such an achievement, if she manages to do it, it would be more than awesome. Everything else would be good too. I just hope she has successful performances, no matter what the result will be in the end.

(I‘m trying to keep my expectations as low as possible so the only thing I dare to hope for is a finish in the top 10. If it‘s better than that I‘ll be REALLY happy. Don‘t @ me, it‘s me, not Zhenya. You can be more positive, maybe I‘ll learn from y‘all. )

I think a medal is unlikely but not impossible. I think even though she is building up to great skates and will have high PCS, it’s probably best to dial expectations way down. My expectations for this season was just to see if she’s headed in the right direction. Her growing pains were actually not as bad as I thought it would be tbh. I think mentally this season has both shook her but also taught her a lot and she is in a great position heading into next season. So for me if she could be in the top 5 or 6 I think that’s a solid way to finish this season.

I’m not one to insist that she needs a quad or 3A next season to be competitive, I think there’s still a lot of growth she can do with her current skill set. But I’m sure she will be working on a quad in the future. The Russian ladies field is crowded for sure. But I remain convinced that the coaching change was the best decision she could make for Beijing given how crowded it is.

I’ve had my heart broken from many sports to agree that low expectations is the way to way to go. Though in this case I think you are being pragmatic instead of pessimistic :)
