Evgenia Medvedeva

Has anyone read the interview of the Director of Sambo 70? It's in Russian. That's why I don't know if the Google translation is correct and I understood correctly. I leave the link in case you are interested: https://tnv.ru/articles/renat-laysh...u-drugikh-ne-poluchaetsya-vot-i-nervy-sdayut/

He has been interviewed in the light of recent events but he has also mentioned Evgenia. He said that while she skated marvelously and cleanly in Moscow she still lost against Trusova who fell twice.

Obviously, this man elevates ET to the altars, but what has caught my attention is that he says that it's no longer possible to withstand the high training loads of these athletes with such high technical content without the use of drugs (obviously allowed ). With what going on in Russia about that and this man speaks openly about it!

It's lucky that Zhenya isn't there anymore.

Whenever I think I've seen it all there's new drama from the Russian FS world. I'm also glad Zhenya's at least physically away from that.

My customs office does not care about anything lol. They let everything through. I will probably have to pay around 11€ in customs *sob*. I order so much stuff from overseas I already know the fees by heart lol

I'd gladly pay whatever they want but the office is way too far away from me to get there and pick it up, and if they send it to you the shipping company charges another 28,50 € in fees. *sobs too*

will try to make the translation tonight and post it :)

here is the free translation of Averbukh in the The Making of Exogenesis video
hope to make sense :)

One of the main goals of the director is to get into the artist. Because many choreographers embody actually themselves in the program.
Yes, when a person performs, you look at him how beautifully he does everything, but then often the artist cannot actually recreate that.

My way in a production is more of directing. I say that here must be an explosion and we begin to improvise together. And I watch how the person I choreograph is improvising. Now we are talking about Zhenya Medvedeva, and I see that this turn "lies" on her, but in this direction - not.

Showing a step, I do not strive to be replicated exactly at all - I show the meaning of the movement. And Zhenya is trying to make it or to make it her own way. I gravitate alot, of course, to dramatic choreography, to figurative choreography. I always feel sorry when I have to remove the choreography that would get out and show the soul, because at this moment must be made turn, bracket turn, rocker turn, counter turn, mohawk, choctaw and other difficult to pronounce things, which the program of a skater is full of.

Choreography of a sportive program is very complicated. As a rule, in five seconds you have to start with the movement, this is not the "Ice Age" Show, where you can show for a whole minute storyline and characters. 5 seconds in the beginning of the program is all that you have, then the movement must start, and the movement goes already to an element, because in order to manage to make all the compulsory elements, and if we talk about the short program – this is cascade, this is a solo jump, double axel, 2 spins, step sequence, - you in general have time to run from element to element and in these pauses to not lose any choreographic moves and manage within the end, because everything is squeezed and pressed by the end and time limit of the program and what you have is 2-3 seconds objectively and that’s all. You choreograph and you understand that a step to the left, a step to the right can be fatal and let's say some kind of emotional steps, steps on the blades toes, which can be called for, we remember the step sequence of Alexei Yagudin, The steps were so emotional and so tearing souls, they were Tarasova’s steps. Now we can not dream of such steps, because just 2 such steps, you already lost the opportunity to make 2 turns and to get this half a hundredth points, which may give you the victory.

Actually, I have to listen to the music many times. Music for a short program was proposed by Zhenya. She said she wanted this story for a long time. Even I had inner doubts, because the music is beautiful, one of the favorites, but I always wanted to find music that was never used, or more emotional music, like Ave Maria, and everyone will be touched and thrilled. But I liked that Zhenya doesn’t go this way in the current situation and does what is now organically for her state.

It is impossible to not like this beautiful music of Muse. Therefore, I answered my questions: I like the music, the most important is for Zhenya to be comfortable with it and to skate very good to it - and then we flew into space. The sight at the beginning of the program, this turn of the head we searched for a long time - as if something is approaching us, we are following it, it is a star that leads us, it is very atmospheric - well, the Muse’s music is atmospheric, and Zhenya’s skating as well, her skating is very free now , it appeared in it notes of good maturity, а mature master.

I saw in this, in all this the infinity, for me it’s not the loop that ends, but for me it is a spiral that goes on endlessly, that’s why I wanted that in the beginning there is a circle, then another one and another one, it’s a spiral development of the storyline.

If we talk about women's single skating, then any program depends on the performance of the jumps. And no matter what a choreographer you are, everything can end at the first failed cascade. And all that you set, all beautiful kind of things, after any failed element, the program is already gone. Not because a person gives up, he continues to fight, but he is now fighting his own anger, it’s clear that he failed here, he hasn’t jumped there, he has to get together and go on for it, but all that aura, all these spirals goes away and are pushed back to the tenth placer. This may offend you or you simply you have to accept that you depend on how the program will be technically executed. This should be taken for granted: even the most brilliant programme will not look good at all even if there is only one failed element.

This is a philosophical question: is the figure skating a sport or an art? I can definitely say that this is a pure sport under music. All gestures, eyes and turns always lose to multi-revolution jumps. This sport is beautiful, aesthetic, loved by all. But this is a sport event, not a ballet competition.

I don’t know about the competitions, I just know that I have great respect for what Shae-Lynn does. Not only with Zhenya, she really is now one of the best choreographers in terms of approach, a completely different, cardinal approach than mine. She is very plastic, musical in what she does, she has very interesting and non-standard moves, musically she is closer to the modern dance, we can say that she manages to do what I always wanted to do too - in one note to make 3-4 movements. As a matter of fact, this way is now the whole dance world, the non-ice one. And what Shae-Lynn manages to do, brings undeniable respect in me.

When a person has already won, he wants to be more than a champion. He wants to leave something and leave it at this moment, this truth, this realization comes, you understand that you want to be a champion in everything. And then it comes the understanding that you should be the best in all aspects. This needs time and I am pleased that recalling the programs of Evgenia Medvedeva, we are able to say about each program what Zhenya meant, what she told us with them. And when this conversation with the audience is happening, then comes this magic.

Thank you for the translation! Wow
What a great read. Love how much respect Averbukh has for Shae-Lynn, a fellow choreographer :)
Also his ideas behind each of his programs and steps and turns.
An Ave Maria program for Zhenya by Averbukh would be a dream come true.

And her skating is magic. :)

mdl, thank you so much for the translation!

I think Averbukh’s approach to choreography is true to his ice dance roots in terms of movement and space on the ice. I wonder if the pantomiming was his idea to help draw out the feeling he wanted in the programs or if it was Eteri’s idea

A little bit of off topic

Averbukh made also programs from skaters who aren’t members of Sambo and the difference is visible

Thank you so much, mdl! It is a very interesting interview, and I love the insights Averbukh gives into the choreographing of competition programmes, as well as Evgenia's Exogenesis one in particular. The fact that he approaches choreography as direction, and as something that adapts to the skater, where he shows the meaning of the movement, rather than wanting to be replicated exactly, explains why this programme sits so well on Evgenia. His respect for his fellow choreographers is admirable as well, and when he talks about Shae-Lynn using one note to create three or four movements, it makes me appreciate what a tricky job it can be, working within the constraints of competition rules and trying to create a programme that can maximise points down to the smallest fraction, yet which also remains expressive and moves the audience with its beauty or energy.

Edited to add: How did I forget to talk about the spiral nature of the programme?!? When Averbukh said it was a spiral that goes on endlessly, something just clicked in my mind. Evgenia's SP is circular, it does spiral out from that turn of her head which becomes that backwards circle on one foot, and from there it just keeps growing, gaining speed as she circles back and forth for her jumps and spins, and then, after the Ch Combo Spin the music itself loses the momentum it has built and returns to the slower melody of the opening of the programme, and the step sequence draws the spiral smaller, until she returns to her starting point. It's beautifully done.

Hi everyone,
glad that you like it, i also think it is very interesting and deserving to reach not only the Russian speaking audience :)

pandatours, pantomiming was not mentioned in this video. If i correctly recall, there was no pantomime in the earlier programs of Elena Radionova that was done by him, so who knows whose idea was...but for me the pantomime was ok and never over the top in any of Zhenya's programs :)

me personally, I was impressed that he does not enforce the choreography, but works together with the skater on it.

An Ave Maria program for Zhenya by Averbukh would be a dream come true.

It would be epic for her to do a "tribute" to Caro...do Ave Maria for her SP and Bolero for the free. I think it would be amazing!

Yes, I hope Zhenya will make a program for one of these music as a tribute, but not earlier than the 22-23 season, please.:drama:

What other merchandise would be a big hit in her site?
Coffee cup, definitely it was mentioned on Medvedevanation.
I would like a note pad, bookmark, socks.

Yevvgeniya Medvyedeva: “I achieved everything thanks to my character - good, complex, mischievous”

The famous skater summed up the results of the outgoing year and talked about life in Canada.

The life of a professional athlete is a continuous series of competitions and trainings, and if we are talking about a talented and titled athlete, then all this goes under the scrutiny of the public. For one of the brightest figure skaters of our time - Yevgeniya Medvyedeva - the next tournament will be the Russian Championship, which will be held in the last week of December. But even after that, Zhenya, unlike ordinary Russians, does not rest - the athlete will perform in the play “The Wizard of Oz”, the first ice show in her life.

“I managed to overcome myself”

-- In which company will you celebrate the New Year? What traditions do you have associated with this holiday?

- On the 31st I have ice shows, but they will end early in the evening, and I will have time to come home, help set the table and celebrate with family. This is our tradition, nothing changes from year to year - like most people, I celebrate the New Year with my family, with my favorite salads. Our grandmother goes to bed early. And my mother and I usually go somewhere, celebrate the New Year with friends - on Red Square or in some cafe reserved in advance. We try to relax and have fun.

-- Your zodiac sign is Scorpio, horoscopes promise a difficult, but successful next year. Here's an example: "You have a lot to learn in a few months, to reconsider the attitude to what seemed familiar." Satisfied with such a forecast? Or would you fix something in it?

- Forecast for that and forecast so that it is what it is. No need to change anything. Everything suits me. My path has never been easy. For me, it’s not new to learn a lot in a few months. In general, I do not listen to horoscopes. I know that some of them are invented. Yes, it happened that something came true. But this is nothing more than a coincidence.

-- But there are some signs, traditions that you observe before the competition?

- There are no such traditions. It is important for me to look good, to be neatly combed, made up. I try not to get attached to anything, as it knocks the brain down a little. Even if something goes wrong, I can always focus on my skating.

-- Often the same astrologers recommend amulets, precious stones ... Are there any amulets that are always with you?

- Jewellery is always on me - a ring, I take off my earrings almost never. I have a favorite napkin holder for dry napkins - it’s like a soft toy (this is a cat), and her name is Luna. I go out with her all the time in competitions, and when I'm on ice, I can see my trainer who holds Luna.

-- How do you remember the past year?

- I remember that I managed to overcome myself. I went through many failures and difficulties. As a result, it turned out to show himself in very good shape at the competitions. My team and I have done great programs that so many have liked. I think that I managed to change myself for the better. This is what I was striving for.

-- Tat'yana Tarasova after your performance at the Russian stage of the Grand Prix said: “Well, how not to respect such an athlete? Well, she doesn’t have quad jumps today. Not the fact that she will never. Because the Salchow, which she learns, is ready for her ... ". Are Tat'yana Anatolyevna’s predictions correct? And is it possible to say that the difficult jumps of young skaters are successful for them primarily because of their age?

- What can I say? Tat'yana Anatolyevna - a wise woman, we will treat her with humour, say that she is always right.

And about the young skaters - what does this 'young' mean? It’s even indecent to call them that. They are already big athletes, have reached the senior level, will participate in senior tournaments. The girls are absolutely legendary, they jump a unique number of quadruple jumps and deserve only respect from the rest of the athletes and journalists.

“My English is much better.”

-- You have been training in Canada for a year and a half. How is your life in Toronto arranged? How do you spend your free time there?

- In preparation for competitions it is very rarely possible to get out somewhere. Basically, I sit at home, skate, train, sit at home. I often spend my free time at home, I love to wrap myself in a blanket and watch TV shows. Mom lives with me, she is always there, we talk a lot. But when I feel that I need to socialise, I go alone or with friends to a shopping center or to a cinema. We also go to the theater, to the circus. I can go shopping, look at branded things. I like to sit quietly in a coffee shop for several hours - it restores me very well.

-- What to bring to Russia as a gift?

- I usually bring maple syrup. I myself am not a fan, but people like it.

-- And how are things with the language?

- My English has become much better. Sometimes they even tell me that I communicate without an accent. But I do not believe this. In public places I communicate quite freely. Although I do not know many terms. For example, talking in a bank or answering a phone call in Canada is sometimes difficult for me, because I can not hear or understand something. Sometimes I feel stupid because of this. But the situation is getting better and better every month.

-- How has your relationship with coach Brian Orser changed this year?

- Brian and I are working quite harmoniously, we have already begun to understand each other by almost a hundred percent. Just like in any family working in sports, there are disagreements that we easily and quickly resolve, find compromises and move on. Working relationships have changed only for the better. And not only with Brian, but also with Tracy Wilson.

-- How is the training process in Canada different from the one you are used to in Russia?

- Training processes in Canada and in Russia are like different planets. I will not say which is better, which is worse. Just completely different. I had to get used to the Canadian school for a year and a half until full understanding with the team. We are so used to each other now that it seems that it has been so for many years.

-- Was it easy for the coach to agree to your participation in the New Year ice show of Ilya Averbukh? How long did Ilya persuade you?

- Brian understands perfectly well that I also have things to do in my homeland. And I think that he was ready for the fact that I could have tours with shows in Russia. He calmly reacted. We told him that I will have a show on New Year's. He replied: “Okay, good.” And he simply asked when I would be back.

As for Il'ya - no, he did not persuade me at all. It was a conversation of adults, in such things people do not persuade each other - there is either "yes" or "no." And we just weighed the pros and cons and decided: why not? After all, Il'ya and I have been working together for many years.

-- Averbukh actually staged you more than one program. How is he helping you now?

- Il'ya always supports me. We work in different countries, but I feel that he is always morally close. After each competition, when there is an opportunity, when I'm in Russia, we meet, discuss mistakes, future plans. I know that Ilya can always be relied on.

-- You are the main star of The Wizard of Oz. What is common between you and your heroine Dorothy?

- Many immediately noted the resemblance between me and Dorothy. Even Dorothy’s hair in the film is reddish. My hair is just red now.

-- By the way, what book, film or concert from recent times impressed you?

- Recently, when I come home after training, I immediately turn on the TV and watch two or three films a night. Recently revised the "Corpse of the Bride" - a cartoon that I saw only in childhood. Now I decided to refresh it in my memory. And remained in absolute delight. It seems to me that I will soon have a marathon based on the works of Tim Burton (director of The Corpse of the Bride and many other films. - Ed.).

“I'm not throwing money around”

-- When you want to improve your mood, what are you doing for this to happen?

- When I am in a bad mood, I eat deliciously. It always helps. I can’t do anything about it. This is not yet reflected in my figure.

-- Have you learned to cook well after moving to Canada?

- I always cooked well. When I really want, I cook culinary masterpieces. But since I basically don’t want to do this, I’m making myself simple dishes rich in protein and vitamins. I try to eat as simple as possible. Simple nutrition is the key to health. Favorite recipes - my and my mother's. I really like to make cakes, bake cheese cakes, pancakes. I have to follow a diet, but I like it and it’s not difficult. There are no prohibitions in terms of nutrition. I allow myself sweets and other stuff, but I always know the measure. In a non-competitive period, I can eat a pie in the evening - and everything will be fine. But a couple of weeks before the competition I am pretty tough on myself and keep to not allowing myself to eat too much.

-- If it was possible to change one trait in your character and appearance, then what would you change?

- I do not want to change anything in my character. Due to my character, on the one hand, good, on the other hand, mischevious and complex, I am where I am now. And around me are the people I need. And facial features - yes, I agree, I would change something in myself. I am calm about plastic surgery. If you want to fix something, you need to change it in order to feel more confident. I would like to change the shape of my nose - since childhood I’ve been talking about this. But whether I will do this is a big question.

-- People often think that in the life of athletes of your level there are special privileges - business class on flights, an expensive car with a driver, restaurants and diamonds. But how is this in reality?

- Flying business class is a necessity, as I personally fly a lot, and the flights are long. For example, from Toronto to Tokyo the flight is 14 hours. This is difficult, because my back, hips, my whole body hurts. It’s necessary to recover a couple of days. And training begins the day after arrival. Therefore, comfortable chairs in business class - this is important. Athletes do not save on health. And restaurants and diamonds are all such conventions! Perhaps such attributes are inherent in some kind of sport, but certainly not to figure skating. This is everyone’s choice, it depends on what the athletes are doing outside the rink, what kind of people are nearby. And the prize fund of each competition is not a secret at all. Everyone can go to the ISU website, look at the price money and approximately estimate a skater's earnings. From these figures we can conclude that we do not swim in diamonds and do not throw money down the drain in expensive restaurants. We are people like everyone else. And quite rationally, we look at life and manage our income.

-- And what gift do you allow yourself for the New Year ?

- I won’t make a present for myself, I consider it useless. For me, the most important thing is to receive some - not necessarily material - gifts from people whom I value, just attention from the heart. And to meet those with whom I had long wanted to meet.

Thanks for the interview translation, Edwin!

I love how fiercely Evgenia defends the 3A: "The girls are absolutely legendary, they jump a unique number of quadruple jumps and deserve only respect from the rest of the athletes and journalists." She knows how hard they work, how competitive they are, and has only had good things to say about them - sign of good sportsmanship on her part.

I had no idea she liked to bake; I guess she must really like cheesecake to single it out! Wonder if she'll bake something for New Year's Eve celebrations with her family. And, nooo, Zhenya, your nose is adorable.

Definitely mugs. And socks would be awesome as well! You can never have too many comfortable socks.

Enamel pins seem to be making a come-back at the moment, and key chains might also be popular. Plus I'm sure a calendar would go down a treat with her fans.

Definitely a calendar. :)

"One can never have enough socks." - underrated wisdom by Albus Dumbledore. Zhenya fans when they look in the Mirror of Erised this Christmas: "I see myself holding a pair of thick, woolen socks with Evgenia Medvedeva print on them." :agree2:

No, seriously, I would totally buy that. As well as a mug. One can never have enough mugs either. I'd like a Zhenya-key chain too and maybe a bag as well? Either way, can't wait to see what she comes up with.

but what has caught my attention is that he says that it's no longer possible to withstand the high training loads of these athletes with such high technical content without the use of drugs (obviously allowed ). With what going on in Russia about that and this man speaks openly about it! It's lucky that Zhenya isn't there anymore.
Sorry, but what is wrong with using allowed drugs? And why Zhenya is lucky? Do not understand it.
