Oof does anyone else feel that test skates are especially chaotic this year?? Or I have I just erased the chaos from past years from my mind?

No, they definitely are. I swear, every two minutes we get news from people being ill/injured and withdrawing. Not to mention the fact that they‘re holding a public event in the middle of a pandemic and apparently didn‘t make wearing masks mandatory for EVERYONE. At this point, I‘m just hoping for Zhenya (and everyone else) to get through this mess unharmed.

And now Samodurova has retired due to fever. Apparently she had a fever since yesterday and they let her participate and be in contact with many people.

And Cup of Russia will have audiences too! In the middle of a pandemic! Especially after getting the news that another skater was ill and allowed to skate, it’s just so worrying.
Honestly RusFed doesn’t deserve Zhenya (and all of their other amazing athletes).

She’s looks focused and determined! We might be getting a 3S+3T combo tonight—we’ll just need to wait and see.

Oof, I'm wondering if she's hurt, because she really looked ouchy to me at the end of that skate.
I will say her reaction to flubbing the cartwheel made me grin. She really does know how to laugh her mistakes off - the slow-mo replay capturing her sticking out her tongue was, well, so Evgenia. And honestly, she has so much courage, to go out there without a coach, to skate and make mistakes, and to come off the ice composed. I just admire her so, so much.

She needs to withdraw from the first stage. This is not like last season's test skates where she flunked her last jumps due to nerves - here we saw that she was URing and muscling everything, whereas last year she landed good 3S+3Lo and 3Lz without any issues. So, there's no way she'll show up next week and even skate a semi-clean program. She's just not ready and it's actually dangerous to skate in her condition. Maybe she can be moved to a later stage.
I'm not saying this because I'm disappointed, I'm not. She's one heck of a fighter! I'm saying this because I'm worried. She can't keep doing this to her health, one day it will end badly.
As for the program: I dislike the music cuts, which I haven't so far in an Evgenia program. But the choreo is really unique and creative and when done well and full of energy, it could be amazing. But it's also a very difficult program, physically demanding like most of Shae's choreographies. So, she needs a few months AT LEAST to polish it. I know she wants to go back to Canada but if she skates next week, she might injure herself further and risk missing Nationals by finishing out of the top 3. What good would that do then?

agree with you guys! I think the choreo will be amazing when it's ready as it's just so unique and when she can commit to it 100% it will be so entertaining. BUT it's incredibly physically demanding and she looked so tired at the end of the skate I'd be surprised if it's just off season stamina issues. I hope she can change her Russian Cup stages to the later ones to get more time to prepare.

Zhenya said in the interview afterwards that she did not prepare her FS well but wanted to skate it. Her glove slipped while doing the cartwheel.

I love the choreo for Alegria. Such a unique program. Cannot wait to see it in its entirety.
I am so impressed with this girl. Every time we’re like ‘ok, she’s done the hard part’ life is like ‘um, nah’.
I have to agree she doesn’t look properly fit, but she has been away from her coaches for 6 MONTHS. She’s been away from her entire team (nutritionists, physio, etc) for half a year. Unfortunately she’s in a catch-22 situation: if she goes to Canada she definitely won’t go to Nationals (as her coaches are on the ‘Do Not Give Exceptions’ list along with almost everyone else). This is her only shot at going to Nationals and I have huge respect for her for attempting this alone. I am quietly confident of her qualifying for Nationals, though I wonder if she should qualify and withdraw so she can say she got there then go back to Canada and train. If Canada can get some international competitions going early next year (even if they’re just opens for Canadian residents instead of proper internationals), she could compete there. But it’s clear that she wasn’t in a competition mindset, she marked jumps and spins which is sensible if she’s not at 100%. She doesn’t need to get involved in the p*****g competition that Abby and Cathy have going on, as long as she’s competing and happy
Having said that...I do wonder if Buyanova has been helping with the steps as the edge work in both programmes has improved again and I think that’s a real strength of Buyanova’s ladies.

Why can't she go back to Toronto after test skates?: I guess it depends on when her first assignment is in the Russian cup series. Zhenya may not get back to Toronto until 2021 believe it or not.
She has to fully isolate in Canada for 2 weeks and if Russia had a surge in cases she may have to isolate for 2 weeks when she came back to Russia, so a month off the ice for a couple weeks training

Borders are still closed. Until the end of September and it could be extended. Also Zhenya has to do the two stages of Russian Cups

Also currently, only Canadian nationals, permanent residents or those considered “essential workers” can even get into Canada in the first place.
Honestly, at this point I’ve gone to hoping that the Russian gov will intervene on her behalf to get her an exception to go to Canada. She’s done a lot for Russian government’s sports ministry, from allowing athletes to participate in Pyeongchang to that fitness campaign she was a part of.
