Exhibitions?

I just agreed with apgold meaning Yuzuru looked awkward or shy with Adelina on that practice clip. Don't understand why you take this as hatred. I don't dislike Adelina.
He looked more awkward with Julia actually. Japanese youngsters are more reserved to foreigners in general, especially to opposite sex.

oh man…Virtue and Moir's gala was so good….dam! also, I really like the Rihanna's song already so…that kinda made it even better.

Virtue/Moir were gorgeous (as always). And Tessa's radiant smile at the end brought joy to my heart ... an uplifting conclusion to their Olympic experience. (I am not a Rihanna fan, LOL, but their skating transcended her singing.)

Gracie, Yuna, D&W...I think this is all.

Gracie, Yuna, Adelina, and Davis & White... and that's it.

Thx, dardar and Toni.
I do hope for everyone's sake (including mine ;)) that gala videos of all the performances eventually become available on YT or elsewhere.

(dardar, Sotnikova was not shown in late night, was she? Did I miss her??)

well, this is a forum, and if people want to complain for legitimate reasons, people can. acting like we can't complain when we have reason to is just ridiculous (or is this a communist board and we are not allowed to complain?) While it obviously won't solve anything, it allows people to vent together, which can make people feel better. just cause it doesn't make you feel better doesn't mean it won't make someone else feel better.

You are perfectly entitled to complain. Hope it made you feel better.

I think I confused Adelina with Yulia...we got Adelina in prime time and Yulia in late night...they did not repeat Adelina's program a second time.

But I still stand by my criticism of NBC re: the fact that they did not show all the medalists. :confused2:

So far any videos that have been posted to YouTube or other social media have been shut down by the IOC and/or NBC.

These exhibitions are making me nostalgic for the days when there was a "pro" comp or show on tv every weekend during the winter. Saying goodbye was less sad when I could look forward to seeing them again as a show skater. My most favorite routines by Boitano, Kulik, Oksana, Witt, Yama, Kurt and many more happened after their Olympic careers were over. Plus I got to see Kwan, Yagudin, Slutskyia and all the best of that generation in person at Champions on ice.

Now we're lucky to get one televised show worth watching a year, Champions on Ice is long dead and Stars on Ice hasn't been to a "city near me" in years. Ah well. It was nice while it lasted.

I hear you re removal of online videos, but Vancouver skating videos have survived on YT ... so I remain hopeful that Sochi videos eventually will resurface.

Just saw Yuna Kim's gala program (via NBC, not online) -- what a treat. (Superficial comment: I loved her FS dress, and her gala costume is very pretty as well.)

I despise the way NBC has handled the gala - broken up not only with endless commercials but showing only 4 performances in the primetime show among all sorts of chit-chat, then showing 5th, 6th, 4th place 2nd place, and only two gold medalists - awful!

NBC has always been THE WORST of the major US networks for covering the Olympics. No contest. I miss Jim McKay and the glory days of ABC. THEY knew how to show sports.

I personally didn't enjoy the gala much. I found Fernandez incredibly corny and annoying. The only funny part of his program was when MT&M poured ice or whatever on him. A few performances I did enjoy were V&M, P&B, Tatsuki Machida, and surprisingly, Yuna (I've never been a fan). Too many slow skates though, and almost all the skaters looked so tired. They need to give some of them a bit more practice in the spotlight too. Is it just me or were galas better in the late '90s and early '00s? I mean, you had the likes of Plush's Sex Bomb, to name one!

Agree. NBC has gotten better at showing more sports and less puff pieces in recent years and I applaud the additional coverage on NBCSN and the live streams, but ABC was much better. Every time Costas opens his mouth to utter some smug self serving BS about the host country I want to throw something at my tv and don't even get me started on Al Trautwig.

The only thing I like about NBC is Mary Carillo and even she isn't as entertaining as she was back before they realized people thought she was funny and started featuring her instead of having her cover random sports.

I used to love Mary Carillo until NBC turned her into the broadcasting equivalent of puff pastry.

Apparently I am beating a dead horse (I'm gifting the rest of you with the perfect set-up line ;)), but ...

Not sure what you mean re gold medalists?? All told, NBC showed them from every discipline, although split btwn the primetime and late-night broadcasts.

ETA, regarding Sotnikova's gala program:
I can't say that I absolutely loved it ... but in general I think it's cool  that skaters sometimes take advantage of the option of incorporating props in exhibitions.
And I felt that Sotnikova used hers creatively and effectively for most of the time that they were in her hands. A shame that they were not completely trouble-free.
I wonder whether the audience in Russia -- where rhythmic gymnastics is very popular, I believe? -- appreciated the concept of her program much more than the audience outside of Russia.

(Complaining would not make me feel better. YMMV. And the chit chat had three parts; two of them were about skating. ETA, Collinsworth is a football guy -- and he is the one who chose to discuss Plushenko. Repeat: A football guy chose a figure skater as his #1 take-away from the Sochi Games. I'll take it.)

I think Collinsworth picked Plushy because that's the one he could tie-in back to football. He did say he was told most skaters do their hardest jumps away from judges, but this guy (Plushy) did it right in front of judges. Not only that, Plushy followed up with the "hush" finger to lip pose to them. Cris said Plushy belongs in the Seattle Seahawks defense!

I could not agree more.

Watching the gala, I kept thinking "if only Pro Skating shows looked like this, people would watch them!" "Get rid of Mannheim Steamroller and just let the skaters skate!" My husband, who I've gently coached into becoming a skating fan by only showing him good stuff (youtube videos and now US Nationals and Olympics this year), almost swore off any "pro" skating stuff after watching a few of the Disson specials!

We need higher-quality pro stuff- I genuinely believe people would watch programs like Virtue and Moir's Stay and Meryl and Charlie's Rach and love them. With the popularity of Dancing w the Stars, skating could gain a whole new audience if they just trusted that people would love pure skating. Because it's the hoopla and live music and cheesy show programs that turn people off.

I was also lamenting the loss of pro competitions. Boitano and Browning, plus Wylie and Kristie, developed so beautifully over time as pros. The World Pros were as exciting for me as Nationals/Worlds, if not more so.

Watching tonight, I was hoping- and perhaps futilely- that Marlie and Voir and Mao/Yuna and Patrick if he goes pro could spearhead a new era of great pro skating, maybe even some competitions?

I watched the NBC late night and they showed P & B, V & M, Hanyu, V & T, Caro, Pang & Tong, Yulia, Patrick, and Mao. Primetime was Adelina, Yuna, Gracie, and Charlie/Meryl They did NOT show Ten, S & K, S & S, or I & K, and no Dai, Javi, Machida, Dai, or Elena either.

My favorite performances were Mao (so so adorable and different for her!), Patrick (he reminded me a bit of Kurt here), and the dance teams- all did great numbers.

Does anyone if NBCSN or NBC will show the gala in its entirety at some point?

Don't know if it will be on TV, but the live stream replay on NBC is working now, or it did for me anyway.

My favs were Mao, Machida, Fernandez, Virtue & Moir & P&B tho like Tara I wanted to se The Lift lol.

The stuff they show now is so terrible. It's like who decided skating fans would really like to stare at some 3rd rate boy band or D list country singer while someone skates around off camera lol. Even on the rare occasion when they feature a singer I like, it's not much fun.

The only show I've seen on tv in years I enjoyed was that Family & Friends thing they do around the holidays with the skaters and their kids and the cheesy product shilling lol.

With the gazillions of sports channels there are now, surely at least one could find an audience for better pro skating shows/comps.

I will bet that Johnny Weir designed Hanyu's costume.

White Legend was Yuzuru's 2010-2011 season SP , Yuzuru's mum created the costume , while J.Weir designed the Zigeunerweisen LP one .

I think White Legend has a very special meaning for Yuzuru , it was the exibition he skated to some weeks after the 2011 earthquake in a charity ice show in Kobe after he seriously thought to quit skating.

It was also the 2012 World EX and now the four-year-cycle is over.

Even if Yuzu looked very pale and tired to me, I recognized his “aura” yesterday evening and it moved me.:)

Probably not my friend...NBC so bad...
