Figure skater Meissner accepts criticism, but can her fans? (Hersh article)

About the coaching change for Kimmie, I would think a change OR simply bringing in outside help might be in order IF her current coaches are unable to help her pinpoint why she's having trouble landing her jumps -- and also how to change that so she can land them again.

If they can't help her figure what she needs to do differently, then she might need to look elsewhere. But I don't think she'd want to change her primary coach if she stills finds the UDel folks are able to help her in other ways, like staying motivated, overseeing her overall condition and preparation, etc.

But I do wonder if she's getting the type of help she needs to get the jumps back.
I think that's already underway. Kwan and Cohen used Rafael often. Buttle too.
Stephane is using Mischin for the 3A. Joubert had help with his spins by the Swiss gal. I can't believe assistance is not forthcoming. It's common practice.
The Nats will tell us more.

A couple of the comments Kimmie made at GPF caught my attention. In the press conference after the SP, she said she will do the 3-3 in the LP and she will do her best to take the gold. Then in the ESPN interview after her LP, she said she fell because she was so anxious, and she was anxious because she really wanted the title.

Even if she had skated her very best, I don't think Kimmie had a good chance of getting more than bronze, unless Mao & Yu-na both had major meltdowns (which they didn't). I wonder if she and her team are making realistic assessments of her abilities, in comparison to the other top skaters. Of course it's important as an athlete to believe in your best. And it's also important for her team to put out a positive image to the media. But on the other hand, you also have to be realistic in assessing your weaknesses and working on areas that need improvements. If Kimmie thinks she's good enough to beat Kim & Mao, and all she needs is to land her 3-3's, then I think "Yes!", she can use a coaching change. A coach needs to be motivating, but at the same time discerning and honest.

In comparison, Zhang's team seems much more realistic and to the point. Zhang said in the press conference after the SP that she was surprised to land in 2nd, and that her hopes for the GPF were to place 5th or 6th with some good scores. And after the LP, her coach said that Zhang's biggest problem is lack of speed, and that's their new top priority. After SA, her coaching team focused on better rotations, and that really improved over the season. And now hopefully this shifted focus will take her to the next level.

Kimmie's team, in comparison, seems to me to lack a clear direction. Her coach's response to the UR calls was that Kimmie doesn't normally under-rotate jumps in practice, including the 3-3. Yet Kimmie's 3-3 is one of the worst UR offenders this season. Pam Gregory's comments were also in contrast to Kimmie's remarks respecting TEB, which showed she was quite happy that she actually managed to land the 3Lz (while aborting the 3T). Then at GPF, Kimmie and her team were very surprised and puzzled after the SP regarding her score (which took a hit from the UR on the combo, and the 'e' on the lip). And in the LP, the ESPN commentators kept on talking about this, and positing that this was the reason why Kimmie's confidence took a hit and that's why she's not skating her LP well.

Well, if her coaching team is feeding Kimmie unrealistic expectations and neglecting to work on the things that she most needs work on, then she might continue to feel confused and un-confident in future competitions. Kimmie is a real fighter and a really nice kid, I really hope she can bounce back and skate to her full potential. I think it's time for her to try a different coach. There's nothing worse than to not have full trust in your coach's words as you go through the grind of daily practices and intense competitions.

Did she really say that? If so, good for her...I like honesty, but it's also possible that there is an underlying issue that team Meissner is keeping from the press and are just having her say things like this to avoid speculation.

She's damned if she does, she's damned if she doesn't. If she's realistic, she doesn't have a champion's mentality and needs an attitude adjustment. If she says she wants the title, she's out of her mind.

One constant, though, amongs skater is that they often say that they do not skate to their potential when they think about the win and podium instead of their performance. That includes Plushenko, one of the greatest competitors. (Of course, he was 15 when he did this.)

The Field 0f Gold is between Mao and YuNa right now. Anything said about Kimmie, Miki, Sara, Caolina, Yukari, Joannie, and possibly Emilie and Ashley is going to be Yeasayer or Nosayer for a bronze medal.
4th and 5th places for Em and Ash would be most acceptable for the USFS.

The chance of getting 3 Ladies to 2009 Worlds for the US is quite possible unless Kira, Aki , Nina or Glebova have an unexpected brilliant performance.

Sure he can criticize skaters and skating all he wants, but he should be able to take it if he can dish it out. Skating fans also have a right to criticize him for his shoddy "journalism" skills. He's been coasting on these types of negative articles for years.

ITA - and I think that this type of negative journalism is part of the problem of declining interest in the sport overall. If - and I do believe they certainly contribute to that - Hersch in particular lately - it's the media that is running down the skaters rather than pointing to their accomplishments - I cite his lack of mention of Kimmie's 4CC win - the ordinary viewer will think the worst and not bother to watch.

I know Kimmie is a fighter and hope she is getting the right feed back from her team to help her put it all together. A phoenix rising from the ashes so to speak. They need to help her clear her head - hopefully they are doing so.

I just re-watched Kimmie's 2006 WC performance. She had much better jumps then than she does now. Both of her 3-3 combos looked fully rotated (or no more than 1/4-turn UR), though the toe-axeling always made the 3T look a bit weird on the take-off. Her 3F and 3Lz both looked higher and stronger, too. (Funnily her 2A actually seemed like the weakest jump, like she lacked tightness in the air or something, and always came down looking a bit under-rotated.)

What happened to Kimmie?! I mean, she definitely has had a growth spurt, her hips and thighs have visibly widened, and maybe that's why she's finding it harder to fit in the rotations. But with her extra leg muscles, you'd think that she might be able to get more height to compensate for it; instead, her jumps are lower than ever now. It can't just be a purely mental thing. I wonder if there are jump coaches who specialize in helping young ladies to transition through the puberty period. Maybe someone like that can really help Kimmie.

I just did a similar thing by watching the 2006 Olys. Kimmie has definitely put on weight/muscle in her hips and thighs, and I think it's more a physical than a mental thing. Which is why I hope she is getting the kind of specific, technical help she may need to figure out a jump technique with her new physique.
As I mentioned earlier, I don't think this would have to be a complete coaching change, unless Kimmie wanted it, but just getting specific help on that issue.

She continues to grow with every performance, IMO, in terms of presentation. There was a brief thread on the Wynonna show and I and others noted how Kimmie is really starting to bring a "quality" of her own to her skating.
