Figure Skating in Kazakhstan

I understand on how you felt about both coaches although I would rather drop off Tammy Gambil than causing havoc on her rotions since she have cause enough damage to her skaters especially those who came from small fed countries.

I think that it was Damon Allen who handles Glenn most of the time.

I would not recommend Gambil to handle older skaters since she didn't handle them well which I noticed the regression her skaters has especially when it comes through puberty. Sure she did "well" on younger skaters but handled worse when they grow older. What she is best for politics which she has the scope in US not to mention that she is liken to a 2nd hand car salesman.
I trust Samodelkina to chose. She has athletics savvy parents too. They will know better.

I don't like either Tutberidze nor Mishin. Both are adepts of the harsh style training, with unacceptable high instances of trauma/unreasonable demands to body shape and Samodelkina is already plenty self-motivated. Samodelkina needs the same coach who trains Sakomoto or Glenn who understands mature skating and can leverage advantages of older athletic women body builds.
I think they just have longevity, it has very little to do with their coaches. Amber obviously is a tough athlete given her age, how she can persevere taking so many splats on the ice attempting the 3A. We can use the same example that Tuktamysheva is proof that Mishin can nurture longevity.

That reminds of what happened to Lilbet and sure that she got what she & her mom wanted but at the cost of her injuries which it brings an unpleasant taste to international viewers yet they didn't know that Tursynbaeva was with Etiri before she was forced to move out because of the ban in regard to the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

I was thinking of why not Mishin instead of Eteri since he's Plushenko's and Liza Tuktamysheva's coach if they want to have Sofia's career to be long-term.
Mishin does not normally coach female skaters. He finds them too highly strung. He has gone on record several times saying so. Tuktamysheva is an exception.

Same goes with Kostner that is along with Michael Huth in the mix.

Samodelkina in an inteview said she's skating the Tallinn Trophy. Mid-November.

Still no indication she's headed to California for a try out with Raf. I suppose the Tallinn Trophy fits within the timeline she can get to California and back. If he's not convinced by her now then he's never going to be convinced. Didn't compete for 18 months, doing shows and vacationing with Trusova during that time, obviously not training to a standard required for the Olympics but that is natural. No-one can train to that level when there isn't a goal. She didn't know if she would be able to switch countries, didn't know when she could compete again. Since that first try out for the junior team, she's improved markedly with each skate, doesn't fall, doesn't fall or step out on combos, base value equivalent to the best international skaters.

Something is up.

There are other coaches besides Raf.
In the US, I'd recommend the Skating Club of Boston or Ilia's parents.
Other coaches is Huth in Germany or Lambiel in Switzerland.
Or Urmanov in Socchi.

I don't know if going to the US works. What are her English skills like? It just makes more sense in Russia, and if you want the best coach you go to Eteri. And I think Eteri would take her on, Sofya's the best chance of making it three individual gold in the last three Olympics for Eteri (gold unlikely though but still you never know), a gold in four of the last four in individual and team. There's no way they let Adelia in the Olympics even as an independent, so Sofya is Eteri's chance. Eteri clearly likes international competition, look at the lengths she goes for Egadze. He's never going to improve but she stays loyal to him, at every international competition.

Ilia's parents speak Russian, as does Rafael ;and, a few coaches and skaters speak Russian at the Skating Club of Boston.

I would not be sure about it due to the fact that it will affect her back injuries more just like what happened to Lilbet (moreso that her mother at that time didn't allow Orser to change the technique out of admiration for Etiri before switching back) also that the KAZ fed has a lot of plans with Samodelkina in the long term which it wasn't wise for Sofia to go to Eteri. The second best option is go to Ilia's parents since I noticed in the interview that Raf has his focus on the young man although hands off approach which they did a good job with Sarah. Training alongside with the reigning Worlds champion will help her to train harder to get back at least her 3A plus they are Russian.

I agree that Ilia's mam could be a good option. Sarah Everhardt is progressing very well under her and there are similarities in style between Sarah and Sofia. I also wonder about Stephane Lambiel. He seems to be able to cope well with skaters from lots of different countries and I'm not sure that they always have good English or French.

Deniss Vasiljevs speaks Russian, French, Latvian and English so he would be helpful in the Lambiel camp.

With the language barrier it would be difficult to make friends in an English/Spanish speaking city, although she would be there to work there would be little time or energy to socialise. I'm sure she would gravitate to girls from a similar background, but still she could just go back to Moscow, train with Eteri, family and friends are there. I'm not sure the Kazakhs are trying to break all of Soyfa's ties with Russia, just Plushenko -- who is a total mess basically that academy exists to create names for his and Yana's shows. The Kazakh officials were meeting with Eteri, they are definitely not rejecting Eteri. They could have done all that behind closed doors but actively promoted it.

And given what happened with a Canadian skater on US soil with a 6 year suspension handed out (should have been a life ban and arrest), as well as other similar scandals involving young females US soil, I think a young woman who does not understand the culture, does not speak the language, is extremely vulnerable. We see what happens to young women who speak English as a first language and understand the culture, and they still get taken advantage of. Unless there is someone there to chaperone her 24/7 I feel like leaving behind a culture and support network is very dangerous for her. She is still a child.

Let's look at the facts too, Eteri gets results with females. She knows what makes a female tick. I think she's honest, doesn't condescend, any criticism or demands come with the right intentions she just wants them to achieve their maximum because she can see what they are capable of, and the skaters respond.

Sorry, looks as though she's packed her bags she is definitely going to Raf. Let's hope it works out. Eteri would be a good backup plan if this falls through.

Junior GP is done for Kazakhstan. From the last event in Wuxi, Smagulov qualified for JWC (unless my math is off). His 3A is really great when he lands it. Dance team of Shelaeva/Soloviev didn’t, but they seem to be progressing. I think Farafonova didn’t either. Kazakhstan still misses a pair as well. But, fingers crossed things will keep growing. Honestly, I still dream of Kostornaya/Kunitsa skating for Kaz, even though it is not supported by any facts or reality whatsoever

Smagulov already had the CTES for junior worlds from last year. :) Farafonova has the CTES for 4CC, but not the lower JW.

Over the past month I was told that Sofya has to earn her reputation again, should expect to be low balled because she's effectively a new skater, but a skater just came back after 2.5 years away with jumps worse than Sofya's yet big GOE on everything, big PCS score too.

This probably dispels the notion that Sofya was low balled because she has to regain her reputation. Maybe there is another reason for why she was low balled because it seems there is no need to regain a reputation after several years away :scratch2:. Hmm, I wonder what it is ;)

I don't think Sofya was lowballed in either competition I saw. Her spins affected her score in both - particularly the layback. That is understandable given the back issues she has had.

Not to mention she has competed internationally in what...two JGP events previously before transfer? She has secured a place of a leader on her national team, medaled in a Challenger, have technical minimums for Jr and Seniors, and is going to an excellent coach. Her fed is behind her. I would call her season so far a huge success. No need to worry about what someone else got where.
