I totally share the Chan love, especially about his edges and his use of the blades and how it just cuts and carves yet smoothly, fluidly -- i just can't stop watching. I know that not everyone finds his 4 seasons riveting, but I must admit that I felt like others here and just was mesmerized AND i cried, which i haven't done in a while (with skating, that is).

I love buttle too --- GOD, it must make many a Canadian proud to have such great men....on that note, does anyone have a youtube link to jeff or patrick's exhibition??? thanks.

I believe the real testament of a truly great skater is one whom can capture your attention and interest just by pure basic skating and Michelle, Stephane, and Patrick definitely have this ability. I could just watch them do footwork, spins, and choreography, and be completely spellbound by their beauty, their passion, and their love for the sport. Who needs the jumps to be interested in these 3?

Patrick Chan isn't on the same level Kwan was at 15. Jeff Buttle is still the top Canadian guy artistically.

That was the performance of his life, though, and I'm sure he'll improve and become one of the best in the World.

I agree. Jeff can still capture my imagination when he skates. I think Patrick is a great skater up and coming but is more of an athletetic skater - so far. Jeff is still King of the blades when it comes to artistry.

Has everyone here forgotten about Jeff Buttle? That is what the judges love best about Jeff - and still do. Wow, how soon people forget the star of the team when the new kid on the block hits one out of the ball park.

We have an honest to goodness rivalry in Canada that will push both men. That only makes the two of them better, will increase the excitement factor and...Just out and out improve things in the Men's side of things in Cdn skating. It's going to a fun couple of years to watch!!

Oh, was anyone else thinking after the Men's event that Mr. Colson must have just been beaming up there watching Patrick from his cloud?

I agree about Joubert, because he definetely is a very wooden skater, in my eyes at least, LOL. About Lysacek I don´t agree, because he has lots of artistry and also showmanship. In my opinion there is not just one kind of artistry, there are so many kinds of it.

About Chan I would say that in the level he now is, he is technically great. Otherwise there is still a long way to go, in my opinion.

Brian Joubert may not be the greatest artist on ice ever, but he's a true Baryshnikov in comparison to someone like Lysacek. :yes:

I agree that Evan is not artistic in the way that Stephane and Jeff are, but I think that he really gets into the emotions of the charchter he is portraying. I love how he uses his face to tell the story... far to many skaters interpret from the neck down, or even worse, from the waist down. The ending pose of Tosca is priceless.

He does remind me of Michelle, they are both so fluid on the ice, with great edges. But he doesnt have enough stamina, because its seems like he often stumbles or make some minor mistake at the end of his programs.

^I think that it's more due to excitment and nerves than lack of stamina. The trip at nationals was probably just because he was so excited with his skate he lost a bit of focus. He dosn't seem to be breathing hard at the ends of his programs which would seem to indicate good conditioning.

I rewatched Patrick Chan's program today and no he does not remind of Michelle Kwan at all, but of another great Canadian male skater - Elvis Stojko. Like Elivs, Patrick really covers the ice quickly and is a good jumper. It will be interesting to watch him develop. I also enjoyed his Gala skate program to Yesterday - although it would have been better with the original Beatle's music not that awful rendition by Michael Boulton (he pretty much killed the tune). Congratulations again to Patrick.:thumbsup:

Sorry, but as much as I like both Elvis and Patrick, those are the only two things I think they have in common--other than the fact they're both Canadians who've won the men's national title in figure skating.

To me, the main similarities between Patrick and Michelle are although they may not be the flashiest skaters out there, they both manage to draw the audience into their performances whenever they skate, and they both (usually) know how to compete under pressure (okay, that's one more thing Patrick also has in common with Elvis!) I just hope Patrick will be able to have as long a career as Michelle!

Another thing I admire--especially after watching the Evan vs. Johnny US Nationals rivalry fluff--is how much Jeff and Patrick geniunely respect and admire each other despite their fierce rivalry on the ice.

I felt the same way not only after watching Patrick's LP, but especially during his gala program (which was dedicated to Mr. Colson). I never thought anyone could make me more during a program to that song than Underhill and Martini back in 1993, but Patrick came pretty close. Mr. Colson would be very proud indeed!

I agree that Evan's "Tosca" is terrible, it sure was the night of the Nationals where he had crummy landings on just about every jump yet the judges let him win. What a farce! Evan is always making painful faces and I guess folks interpret that as artistry? Geez.....Man if Evan is to represent America at Worlds and does a repeat of his nationals "Tosca". We will loose for sure. Johnny did pretty well, clean edges and clean landings. But I really think Europeans will win at Worlds. Patrick Chan has a good chance and Jeffrey Buttle does too if he can pull off those darned triples. jeff's artistry is the best by far. I hope Joubert is well.:
