Four Continents Championships 2008

Of the skaters who qualify, I wonder who will go and who will decline. For the ladies, It looks like a blockbuster so far if all of the Japanese designes (Asada, Ando and Suguri) show up, along with Kim.

The U.S. ladies usually bail on Four Continents (I blame Michelle for setting the trend, LOL), unless it is in North America. Will 2008 U.S. ladies' chanmpion Alissa Czisny  make the trip, or will she stay home and train for Worlds?

I think it would be a good chance for those who struggle with nerves to get a practice at a competition setting. Like Mao and Miki and Carolina. Among the top ladies, Mao and Carolina may need to work on their nerves at competitions more than any.

Miss Czisny wasn't happy she was forced to go to four continents last year, so I guess she wouldn't be willing to go unless she doesn't make the worlds team. Out of Meissner, Hughes, Czisny, Wagner, Liang, 3 will be going to Sweden, and 2 and unknown someone will be going to Korea I guess.

hm

Well last year the entire ladies podium went (Meissner Gold, Hughes Silver) on top of going to worlds, so why not this year? I'm expecting Meissner to go, and could easily see Wagner or Liang there. Hughes (school.) and Czisny (won't want to).will, I'm guessing decline if they are asked.

Last year it was in Colorado Springs. Not only was that convenient for North American skaters, the USFSA might have forced them to go to make the event a success. The top three U.S. ladies went, along with Rochette.

Japan, in contrast, sent Sawada and Onda (Suguri withdrew) and Korea was represented by Yea-Ji Shin and Na-Young (not Young-Na) Kim.

This year, in Asia, it could switch.

In last year's case though, there was also the Asian Games, and Yu-na was injured.

That's always a good point to get in as much comp as possible. However, the location is a problem. 4CC are spread over half the world, whereas Euros are in a tight knit group of countries and easy to get to.

One of the dangers of flying betwee N.America and Korea is the chances of becoming ill on the flight (developing colds on airplanes is quite common) as well as aggravating your circadium(sp) rythms. Since Mirai and Caroline will not be at Worlds, I think they will go. Kimmie, Emilie and Ashley should not go but if they do and stay healthy that will be good experience.

There are lots of US Men who could go if Johnny and Evan don't.

All the Pairs should consider participating for the experience since those who get to the Worlds will not have much chance of medaling.

Davis/White should go as well as Greg/Pet.

In the last analysis, this comp is a tough travel for almost everyone.

I think Evan usually does go to 4CC. Johnny, of course, usually doesn't, and I'd be amazed if he showed up at this one, especially after the GPF. So it'll be Evan and the other two members of the top four, probably.
Are Mirai and Caroline eligible? It is an ISU Championship, so don't they need to be 16? This one might get passed down pretty far.
Shilband's teams have usually gone, so that's all three of B/A, D/W, and V/M. If S/B make the top three, they might decide to go to Junior Worlds instead and let G/P complete an international competition. Though if G/P make the top three instead, they haven't gone for the past two years, but one of those was an Olympic year and the other might have been Linichuk's decision rather than theirs; they went in 2005, when they were certain for Worlds. So they'd be a question mark.
That leaves the interesting question of who'll accompany V/M to Korea, and that depends on who'll finish where at Canadians in the first place.

Miss Izzy - You are correct. Mirai and Caroline are not eligible. My goof.

Probably Alyssa and Bebe if they want to go.

Joe

i think Caroline Zhang, Mirai Nagasu, Rachel Flatt are eligible to go.
why--the age rule only applies to the ISU World Championships and the Olympics.
if that was the case then no matter what would have Caroline Zhang been eligible to compete in the Grand Prix series event or the Final.

Mirai, Caroline and Rachael are not eligible to go. You have to be 15 before the previous year's July 1st (IIRC) to compete at an ISU championship, and they are not. 4CC IS an ISU championship.

It will be interesting to see who USFS sends to Junior Worlds. Does the U.S. junior champion get an automatic invitation?

Mirai and Rachael competed in the Junior Grand Prix. Mirai would probably want to go, but this will be Rachaels' second year competing in U.S. Nationals as a senior and she may feel that she has moved on.

It would be funny if Caroline Zhang won the senior U.S. championship and then went to Junior Worlds to try to become the first junior world champion to repeat.

so the Grand Prix Final is NOT and ISU championship. funny. i thought it was.

I don't think so. Championships would, I believe, allow skaters of all countries to participate (ie. each ISU-member coutry can send at least one skater/team per discipline per championship), which is not the case for the Grand Prix series and Final. Yes, these competitions are governed by the ISU, but they are not championships.

I think it has to be an ISU event because the ISU uses the results for their World Standings.

It may be that the skaters in question may be considered Juniors and therefore not eligible for Senior competitions. So why the GPs do include Juniors needs to be explained. Any Rules fans here?

Miki's injuries?

I wonder how healthy Miki is now and whether or not she will be at 4CC. Her mental conditions seem to be getting better. But I wonder how her physical health is. I heard that her injuries were actually not good despite her excellent performances at Nationals. Is she okay now? She is still very young and I hope that her body has natural power to heal soon.:)

The ISU shows its competition schedule list, and the 4CC announcement file (PDF) linked from that list says :
"Entries must reach the ISU Sport Director for Figure Skating, the ISU Secretariat and the Organizing Committee not later than January 22nd, 2008 (see Rule 378, paragraph 1 and 4 and Rule 104, paragraph 4).

So that means the USFS must determine the 4CC participants before LPs, without knowing the outcome of the Nats.
