Gabriella Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron

I already said how much I loved their programs:laugh::luv17:. I already stop the number of times I watched their programs. I think the fall in Finland is already forgotten, it was clear, they know where they lost points (it's not a story of level).
For the choice of Ed Sheeran, it is normal that it does not please everyone ... but for some people whatever they do it's bad so ... :scratch2:
I do not know how the year will end ... I prefer to remain very cautious. Judges seem to like their programs for now, but those of Canadians too. The first element of response will be in the final grand prix, their only opportunity to beat V/M before the Games (for me, they have to win, to believe in the title).
Gabi and Guillaume want perfection, everything will have to be more than perfect.

I found this; thought it was interesting enough to share. http://skateguard1.blogspot.co.uk/2017/10/are-you-ready-to-rhumba.html It's not directly about Papadakis and Cizeron. More a comment on complaints I have read that Ed Sheeran's music isn't Latin enough and is Anglo music. If the set pattern for the rhumba was adapted multiple times for the ice rink from the ballroom by multiple English people, including Courtney Jones who was a consultant for Torvill and Dean, the latter of which obviously choreographed the Sd for P/C, and was also the first person to get a perfect 6.0 for the rhumba as compulsory dance, and the set pattern used is a development of the original pattern by Gregory Jones, who is also English, I don't think one can really seriously complain the music chosen- despite being very recognisably of rhumba and samba rhythms- is going against the authenticity of the latin rhythm dances as performed on ice for the last seventy years- or that the choreographer who actually has the most provenance within the history of the sport of any choreographer today is somehow going against the spirit of this particular short dance, with his music choice.

Sometimes it can be good to read YT comments because someone mentioned this hand gesture from Gaby, which is well to die for. I hadn't noticed at all and that's what I like about this FD, it's so full of little moments like those, even more than any of their previous program. So many different type of holds, spins, drops, twizzles like this new fav of mine. I can't wait to see it evolve so they get even more assured and really own it.

There is so much going on with their hands in this programme. But even in the short, you have a similar had gesture from Gabi before they enter the lift. There is also a very distinct gesture from Gabi at the end of the circa step in the free. If you go the Masters there is a brilliant moment after the double twizzle where Guillaumes hand travels down Gabi's arm and then back up again https://youtu.be/Lgmexn7oMlM?t=3m48s. When I think about concentration on hands in art I think of Edith Piaf who always had specific hand gestures for songs, and also Tamara Lempicka who always concentrated on hands in her portraits. But also this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np_Y740aReI, where there is distinct hand choreography in every shot (this is possibly the handsets piece of art ever). They are in a very fine tradition here........

O but I MUST mention my favourite hand moment. Rewatch euros 2017 and note the final choreographic lift, in the midst of the two rotations where Gabi is being put down, Guillaume puts either his hand on his chin or makes a shushing gesture to the judges ( I can't quite work out which, but his hand position definitely changes during the two rotations). Whatever it is, it is brilliant. At the point where they are doing a lift where the audience will be stepping back to be wowed by it, he has put in a gesture that has the opposite effect- it pulls them in and makes the feel an intimate part of the lift. Now that is a moment of genius........ https://youtu.be/BjRBX8q5X90?t=4m36s

I actually love how none of the movements is left hanging, every single gesture is planned yet it seems so spontaneous. I think that's a bit what I see from Montreal Camp : they let you play with the music and the movements comes naturally. It gives an organic feeling and it has done some epic results with P/C.
Less than 2 weeks and we get to see that once again ! I'm refrainig myself from watching too many times Ice Dance programs this year, so that I can keep the freshness for the GP season but it's not easy (and I often fail haha !).

In case anyone else want to know the number of times P and C circle around each other in the free skate between the end of the circular step and the end of the combination spin, I make it 32 times in about 35 seconds.

How is that even possible ? And you gonna make me watch it again, what a chore :)

A great article. Thank you, Maya. Now I need to rewatch the twizzle sequence. :)

Someone posted a YouTube video clip of the twizzle sequence with the beautiful end of it (which is definitely a Cirio influence, I think, with Guillaume exiting from the twizzle at a low position close to the ice). I will post the YouTube link in my next post as I apparently cannot post a link on my very first post on GoldenSkate. The system is designed to auto-ban a first post that has a link (due to potential spamming).

I noticed the gorgeous arms movements the first time too ! With better Camera work at Finlandia, you saw tiiiiiny touches (like the end of the 2nd set, watch carefully the hands movements) and it adds dimension to what could have been a simple exit. Plus the first move at the very beginning. :points:

I demand they release videos of the off-ice training which is all about the arms movements according to this article :angry2:
Maybe Alain, you could ask them next time you talk to them
Otherwise, anyone thinks the four of them ranked from the shortest (MFD) to the tallest (Guillaume) on that photo make them look like the Dalton brothers in Red Kit

Yep, and this is why I do not understand some of their toughest critics out there always saying they don't skate to the beat of the music, because in both their SD and FD this year they really match their body movements and blade work to the beats imo (esp. as I've said it before in the SD set pattern, I keep watching it trying to see if they're missing a beat at some point but no, this pattern is pure gold). Sure, in the fastest section of the FD, they still need to pick up speed especially right after the whirlwind of their Rolift and SpinCombo but it will come with the season. Last year too, they had hard time to keep up with the demanding tempo of the 1st part but by Euros they were there and then we all know how it was at Worlds. This season, they are much closer already so I hope by GPF, the speed should be right where it needs to be.

Got me a little surprised, since they always sometimes significantly higher PCS marks for interpretation of the music. But yes for the speed comments. I am happy they got to compete at a Challenger (competing a program is a lot different than training it at home even if it's perfectly done). They had time to train their elements and I'm eager to see the results next week  Gotta love the Olympic season, I've never seen them so ready !

Me too, I am surprised by those critics yet I've read it on forums here and there and also on TSL for instance, where he goes on about how they can't keep the beat in the SD but fortunately the judges seem to agree with us on this one. Anyway, I shouldn't pay attention esp. to TSL.

t how they can't keep the beat in the SD

Do not forget that before the beginning of the season, for some Gabi and Guillaume's SD was going to be a disaster. Let's be optimistic, there is progress:laugh:

To laugh, the main critics addressed to P/C:
- since 2014, they are doing the same free program (some should really buy glasses)
- their lifts are very very simple (they are level 4 but ...)
- their SD is off-theme since it is obvious that P/C can not skate a Latin dance (Ed Sheeran no but the Rolling Stones yes)
- one of the partners does not know how to skate (of course...).

For me, artistically they are on another planet. They are the only ones to make me forget everything during their programs, time stops. They are mesmerizing.

I admit that I watch them because I like the format, however they can be unbearable with some skaters especially if you have your favourites. But on a technical point of view, they don't have much to offer, especially in Ice Dance. For the Rostelecom recap basically, it was : "this should be above" "this should not have been that way", but it was a bit empty, no explanations. However they seem really excited about Ice Dance this year, so I always want to know what their opinion is. I just wished they got someone like Tracy Wilson, Tanith, Ben, Mark Hanretty to comment with them (but if they're already commenting on TV it could be seen as a conflict).
