Gabriella Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron

Thanks, Floatingworld! Perfect!

Most welcome! :-) Alas, I don't speak French fluently so I can't translate for others ... though I understood parts of the interview since I learned some French in school (and I love watching French movies :-)). Maybe as G&G continues with their success it will motivate me to continue learning so that I can follow French coverage of them. :-)

A quick digest:
the anchor starts by reminding everyone that the OG are 58 days away and by announcing that G/G just won the GPF with yet another WR. G/G acknowledge that they are satisfied with their results in this first half of the skating season. The sports anchor gives a very quick and simple explanation between Pair work and Ice Dance requirements.
G/G say that their 1. place in Nagoya is the sign that they are on the right path and that their practice/work is bearing fruit. They hope to make further progress up to the OG. The journalist gives an overview of their career and ask them to comment on it. G/G say that they tend to forget what they have achieved as they mainly focus on their practice. Rivalry with V/M: Guillaume says that they are relieved to know that they can win against them and to be able to deliver a good performance under pressure. They do train alongside V/M but not everyday . Having them as training partners has the positive effect of pushing their own limits. The tension between competitors is very manageable as both couple appreciate/admire each other's work. Competition in sports at its best: emulation, stimulation but no negative feelings. They recognize V/M's great experience. They don't see themselves as absolute favorites, they have just beaten V/M once. Their goal until OG is to continue working on being mentally strong, being in their own "bubble" and keep their focus on their training. Music: was it a safe choice? Not really, says Gabi. Their discovered their affinity to classical music when they danced on Mozart and think that they have not yet finished exploring a style they initially didn't think they were suited for. They confirm that they are aiming for the Gold and that their GPF helped them as it was the first time this season with the all the main competitors. They also mentioned that the video work they did with l' Or (Olympic sponsor) was satisfying for them: showing them at work with their work clothes as opposed to the 4 minutes of performance during competitions with costumes.

As I told you, it's a bit rough ... but is my little thank you to Floatingworld :)

Excellent, peepsquick! Thank you so much for the translation! :-)

Hello from me! I am from Athens,Greece.I really love this beautiful and artistic ice dance couple and I watch their success 3 years now.I read every day your posts and I am happy and proud especially this year for Gabriella and Guillaume. Many kisses from me!!!:):luv17:

Welcome Charis ! Post often ;)

This is Gsquared TV show from yesterday : http://www.beinsports.com/france/re...ports-1312-avec-g-cizeron-et-g-papadak/734131 Starts at 39:25
(Tell me if you cannot see it, it should be okay)

Unfortunately geoblocked for me, so could job those snippets were not on twitter. BTW Anyasnake, I meant to ask you if you could spot why they didn't get level 4 on the circular in the FD whereas they did in France. It looked pristine to my untrained eyes. Thanks in advance.

Welcome Charis, post often and long. We love rambling around about our favorite couple here. Plus, we're gonna hit a drought soon after French Nationals.

Hi all  I've been lurking for far too long here and there and wanted to check for any info or translations for the slew of media ops Gaby and Guillaume have been up to these days and decided why not reply and say hi! Lia here, not an expert on figure skating but simply just in awe of how much beauty these two have brought to and performed through this sport  Thanks to everyone I'm slowly learning about technical things and as a non-French speaker I'm grateful for all the translations we get  If we ever do get Korean media ops in Pyeong Chang I could contribute as a Korean myself haha even though I wouldn't be able to watch them live. Looking forward to many more fun discussions here! Hugs

For the Cist I actually don't really know, I'll have to rewatch it even more closely and it's probably out of my knowledge. OTOH, I wonder if both top teams didn't get a level less than what they should have get ? At the beginning, it looked like V/M was going to be close to 120 and P/C 122. But I'll do my best to see if I can find something !

Hello and Welcome liapacco ! Post long and post often ! ;) I'll try my best (with my time) to translate as much as I can or to at least post everything that I can find ! :)

Many thanks for this great video!

Catherine Pinard is definitely a very special coach in Gadbois. Apart from Gabriella and Guillaume, I am not sure who's being trained by her among the other ice dance couples. I don’t think she works with Tessa and Scott otherwise their interpretation and their connection on the ice would be very different. Just my personal impression but I really feel like Gabriella and Guillaume are the ice dancers the most in sync with Catherine Pinard. They understood the most how to find in themselves and share with each other the strength of their souls and their fragility as human beings to translate these strengths and fragilities on the ice and invite the audience feels his own emotions and feelings.

If we were to retain one thing from this interview, it would be for sure this sentence:
“We try to not put a sense onto things but to let the sense emerge from the things”
If one would like to describe in a few words how Gabriella and Guillaume managed to mesmerize the public since the 2014/2015 season, then this sentence says everything. No need to add anything else.

I’m sure you read at least once a comment stating P/C danced on similar music themes since a few years. So what do Mozart Concerto24, “Rain into my black eyes”, Stillness Oddudua and Moonlight Sonata have in common? Easy answer: Nothing! But one can clearly feel there’s something so typical to P/C in all these programs. Letting the sense emerge from the things is the common frame of their various FDs, independently from their different music choices (indeed big challenge!). Translating this on to the ice requires outstanding skating skills for a maximum of softness and emotions.
Fully agree, I think you pointed out perfectly what the difference is between GabGui and the others and even between GabGui now and GabGui before: the fact that they are not trying to explain what the music or the choreography means, but letting the music and the dance explain itself.
(I should have translated the word 'sense' by 'meaning' of course, it's the more logical translation that didn't come to me yesterday evening.)

(Btw: it was Mozart's 23rd piano concerto, and it rained in YOUR black eyes, not in mine , and the only similarity in music one could accept is 'Rain', 'Stillness' and 'Happiness' - I love all of it and have not the slightest wish to have other music, but you could say that these are all three minimalistic repetitive styles of music - if you really have to nitpick about something so silly.)

Which styles do you guys think P/C should go for/can pull off in the next four years?
Personally I love their EX this season. And I would to see them do something like that but I’m not sure how well it would work in a FD competitive format.

My only wishes for the next quad are:

1. No Broadway musical type of program.

2. More work with Cirio, and exploring contemporary dance in general.

Totally agree, please no musical. More Cirio please also. They could work on more radical movements, more staccato and very avant garde dance with. So they would need to let go a bit of their extremely fluidity. It would be a nice challenge. It would push more towards music like Oddudua. It could also be music with lots of dissonance.

Totally agree with what you've said. Such choices are always a challenge. Their Oddudua dance was mesmerizing. And contemporary ballet is something special. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SMmL6kIx-w

I'd like them to go test different colour. They will always keep their style of skating, but if they could impersonate anger, or fear... I'm actually very eager to see that!
Or if they could refind their edginess with a different choreographer for their free, I wouldn't mind it at all. Carol Lane ?

if someone wants to share is magical traduction power, it's up to you ^^
Well, here's something. DéliSport vous sert un café glacé en or. Ou un thé dansant sur glace croustillante.
I miss French pastries. *DROOL*

Virginie Ramel: And now Daily Sport gets into Daylight Saving Time [called 'Winter Time' in French] with the upcoming Games in PyeongChang in South Korea; there's only 58 days left, less than 2 months until the big event.
Until then, we'll present to you a maximum of French athletes and especially, we're going to invite to the table of Daily Sport the big tricoloured [=French, due to the three colours in the French flag (obviously a very very rare feature in national flags)] champions, notably, this evening, Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron, good evening (GP/GC: good evening) to both of you, delighted to have you with us at Daily Sport; and also Flora Moussy, we won't introduce her anymore, she has a ton of strings to her bow, notably the passion for figure skating.
So Gabriella and Guillaume, you pocketed this weekend your first Grand Prix Final, that was in Nagoya in Japan - world record on top of that - it's quite a difference in time zone: do you realize what you accomplished this weekend?

Gabriella Papadakis: Yes, well, yes, it was our goal in fact. So last year we have been beaten by the Canadians, we lost our World title, and so this year we knew there would be a lot of pressure, besides, it's the year of the Olympics, so yea, we really wanted to deliver two beautiful performances, which we did, and it made us win the competition, so we are very satisfied.

VR: So for those who follow figure skating only a little or even not at all, we will explain the basis again: Flora, in this sport there are four categories, right?

Flora Moussy: Exactly: Women, Men (obviously), Pairs and Ice Dance for Gabriella and Guillaume.
In every category there are two programs: a short program which is more technical and a free program which is a bit longer and mixes technique with artistry - correct me if I'm wrong - and we'll just look at the big differences because many don't know how to make the difference between Pairs and Ice Dance. Simply put: in Pairs, you have jumps, in Dance, there are none at all; in Pairs, you have lifts, but the lifts are done with stretched arms as you can see in the picture (we see Vanessa James and Morgan Ciprès, and in front of them are you, Gabriella and Guillaume), [in Ice Dance] there are lifts, but the female skater should not be [fully] above her partner; and there are other subtleties like [not more than] six seconds for a lift, rotational lifts, there are many required elements, think of twizzels, they are the fast turns in Ice Dance that are executed in parallel by both skaters; and then obviously, the biggest difference in Ice Dance is the enormous artistic side that we don't find in Pairs, it's really the biggest difference, there are many transitions notably that do not exist in Pairs.
[On the image, the words PAIRS and DANCE are seen with underneath respectively the words JUMPS/THROW JUMPS/STRETCHED-ARM LIFTS and NO JUMPS/CERTAIN LIFTS ALLOWED]
You have said it, Virginie, the Grand Prix season has ended with this victory last Saturday, we remind you that on top of this you have set three consecutive world records in this Grand Prix season, you have achieved everything, so we can say that you are satisfied with this first part of the season?

Guillaume Cizeron: It's true that we have achieved all our goals for the start of the season, and what was super interesting is that we managed to beat our own record each time, and thus continue to progress. It's true that it is very reassuring, because it shows that we're on the right track, that our work pays off, and that we're still progressing. Above all, we know that we still have a margin for improvement until February, so we are very confident for the rest of the season.

[Words on the insert are showing the 2 world titles, 3 European titles, the Grand Prix victory and the world record for total score. Which about every moron would have understood, I know.]

FM: Even a very large margin for improvement: you are 22 and 23, you have already accomplished so much at such a young age, you are the first skaters in the history of Ice Dance to pass the famous milestone of 200 points; do you realize all that, the fact that you're part of history now?

GP: Yea, it's difficult to realize it when you're in the flow in fact, because each time, a new target appears, but yes, we are super happy with what we accomplished, we work really hard also for that, and we hope that it will continue.

VR: And this victory is even more beautiful because, as you have mentioned before, Gabriella, you have beaten your main rivals, the Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. It was the first head-to-head of the season, last year the Canadian couple beat you, both at the Grand Prix Final and at the Worlds; this season, you have little by little closed the gap to finally jump over them, less than 2 months from the OG of PyeongChang. Does this victory carry a lot of weight in your/their heads, does it bring you the status of favourites?

GC: Well, it was important for us, first of all to know that we could beat them, and moreover to deliver performances that-- very good performances while under such high pressure, because, well, it's not easy in fact to be in this sort of duel with Tessa and Scott. So it was important for us, this victory, because it let us-- well it's true that in the minds of people maybe we now are the favourites, but above all, it reassures us and gives us a good basis.

FM: You are training partners in Montreal, let's not forget, with Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, well, and other skaters also, there's an enormous structure around Marie-France Dubreuil, Patrice Lauzon and Romain Haguenauer; how do you-- you watch each other during trainings? You check how it's going with-- you cross each other, you observe each other?

GP: Yes, well, we train at the same rink but we don't always share the ice at the same time, and then, when we work, we're really focussed on ourselves. But then again, sure, to see them train every day, push themselves to the limit, be motivated etc, it motivates us even more, it's stimulating and we would not be at the level that we are now if we would not have that stimulant every day, that's true.

FM: Are you close with them? Because we see on social media notably that you are quite close with other couples, we think of Madison Hubble and Zachary Donahue, you are close friends with them, we see less pictures with Tessa and Scott, is the rivalry also impacting that, or not at all?

GC: Well, it's true that there is a bit of competitive tension, but a healthy one; we push each other, we push each other to do better, so well, all in all, it's true that it's not always easy to deal with, there are some small tensions, but nothing nasty, it remains very respectful, we have a lot of admiration for each other, and no, I think it sets a good example for the sport.

FM: We'll remind you however that they were Olympic Champions in 2010, and second in Sochi in 2014, they retired at the end of those Games, they made their come-back, they beat you in the first season: did you feel that their status as Olympic Champions gave them a little advantage with the judges, or not at all? [Why do these questions always push for an answer at an extreme - something, or the complete opposite? Is there nothing in between?]

GP: Well it's a couple that has done very very beautiful, incredible things, they were formidable competitors for years, and then, above all, they have an enormous experience, after all these years, that we don't necessarily have, that other competitors don't have, so well, they are really huge, huge, huge rivals, and then, well, rivalry is difficult but we learn a lot and well, that's the beauty of sport.

VR: You learn a lot, you certainly have a long career ahead of you, but these are your first OG, you come there with the status of favourites, that's quite enormous, do you learn to deal with this pressure with this psychological advantage? Did you expect that you would go there and be the chased instead of the chaser / the hunted instead of the hunter? [I don't know what is better in English: the first is more fitting, as nobody is going to get killed but the chase is certainly on; at the same time it may sound weird?]
Guillaume!

GC: (laughs) Well, in fact, we are a bit both, because we beat them only once in two years, so... We don't consider that really, we try to focus on our performance, to stay in our bubble, to zoom out from everything else, from whatever happens around us [no clue what verb Guigui uses here: "de ce qui peut <setser> autour de nous"] from these rivalry stories, because well, in the end, in Montreal we don't really feel that, but... We try to leave no space for error, to control our performance to a maximum, and also the mental side of it, because at competitions the mind gets the better of everything, and so, well, we really focus on thàt.

FM: This season you chose to come back to a program that's a bit more classical, Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, it reminds us a bit (we're listening to it by the way - it's gorgeous - it's even more beautiful when skated by you, obviously) but it's true that it reminds us of the program on Mozart that you skated to win your first world title; is it a choice from your side not to take risks in an Olympic year?

GP: Well, it's not really a question of risk or no risk, in fact, four years ago [three as far as I can count] we skated on Mozart but it was not at all a style that we thought would make us succeed; but in the end we loved the work we did there, linked to classical music which is very very rich, and we decided that we would come back to that for the coming Olympics, because that's what we love to do and we think we can contribute a lot with that style, and so, well, we chose that music from Beethoven that we both love since long, and it seemed quite self-evident in fact.

VR: Do you dare say it: your goal for the coming Olympic Games in less than two months is the Gold Medal?

GP: (nods)

VR: Yes? (Gabriella nods and 'hmm'-s) It's official?

GP: Yes. (laughs)

FM: Acknowledged, acknowledged after all, but... [Not sure if I get the meaning of what she says]

GP: (laughing) No, well, no, but it's certainly what we're trying to get, its...
Just now we won the Grand Prix Final with all the competition present, so well, we know it's possible, so now we need to confirm. And well, it's a lot of work that we do since 13 years, since we live in Montreal, that we still do day after day, that goes into small details... So, what everyone sees is the four minutes thirty seconds when we have our costumes on, and when all is perfect, but sometimes it's beautiful to connect with the audience-- by the way, the crew of Café L'Or came to film us at Clermont-Ferrand while we were training, so it's super to be able to connect with the audience when we have no costumes, when we have less make-up, well, when we are more into the search for details. (laughs) It's super interesting.
[How wonderfully spontaneous of Gabriella to completely out of the blue bring up the French Olympic Team's sponsor advert that is totally coincidentally playing at the same time on the screens behind them all!! To be honest, she did a rather good job and was close to really fit it into her answer - though it's clearly a scheduled feature.]

VR: Well thank you very much Gabriella and Guillaume, since we are entering the Holiday Season, we wish you all the best for 2018, that announces itself very very plentiful.
