Gabriella Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron

Rachael "Yamagaba" lmao

They've been training since August. I don't think there is much chance of Gabriella having turned into Hulk Hogan since then :yahoo:

Yes, I can see how the lifts require more muscle, but when I think about some of the prominent pairs skaters (like Gordeeva), they aren’t necessarily muscular. I may be wrong though. What I am afraid of is that Gabby is being trained to be more muscular for the sake of simply appearing to be ‘powerful’ (like Hubbell) when skating and that this also is an image that conforms to an ideal in current society for women to build muscle (e.g., celebrities like Jessica Biel, Michelle Obama, etc.).

You do have a point. Overly muscular woman look less feminine and - especially in dance - are not very appealing to me (Tessa Virtue was very muscular to me).
But on the other side - when I see skaters that are very thin (like Kevin Reynolds, for example) I always wonder how long they can keep this up. It just dosen't seem healthy to me.

This is the most ridiculous thing I think I've ever read. Muscular women are not less feminine! Any females reading this please, please do not be afraid of muscle. We are not meant to be delicate, wilting flowers we can be strong and powerful. Lifting weight has immense health benefits and believe it or not you're not going to turn into a body builder (unless you want to which is fine too). There's a reason why women are encouraged to to do more weight resistance exercises as we age and go through the effects of menopause. It's 2018 and women are still body shaming other women how sad, and we expect men to treat women with more respect unbelievable :disapp:

If Gabby want to put on more muscle to help with the new lifts then I'm all for it! :hap10: Safety first and you don't get scores in Ice Dance based on the circumference of your waist! :peace: I've always thought a higher degree of athleticism was one way for them to evolve as dancers -- although Guillaume is already pretty darn fit...

Of course you should do whatever it takes to be/stay healthy and muscle tone is part of it. Doing sports all along is what will keep your bones strong and most importantly keep the muscles holding up your bone structure strong. But you don't have to be "bulk up" to do that. Ballerinas are the strongest athletes in terms of core and muscle tone.
I would be the first to say that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes: I personally don't have an ideal type of beauty. In the case of Gabriella, I don't think her body type (long muscles) will allow her to get thicker muscles. I do think that part of her magic resides in the (false) fragility she projects.

What are you talking about? Gaby is not bulking up. Some people must have a different definition of what it means to bulk up. And even if she does, so what? You say you don't have an ideal type of beauty, but in the same breath say Gaby's magic is her fragility so you do have an ideal beauty type--for you beautiful women have to look fragile. That's your prerogative of course but it's very closed minded and I find it sad more than anything. No wonder women subject themselves to all kind of horrors if that's the ideal standard for beauty. And lastly, my argument wasn't for the case that women should bulk up. Every woman should do what makes her happy and feel comfortable. I took exception with the implication that strong women are more ugly that fragile women because that's how it comes across. Anyway this is my last post on the subject. Good luck to Gaby and Guillaume this season can't wait to see their programs.

Debbs122, you misunderstand the post : Gabriella is a strong vital woman who is not starving herself to look thin and I didn't say she was bulking up either. I DO appreciate the diversity of body shapes and types. I agree, let's drop the topic as it has too much potential for misunderstandings. It was not my purpose.

Of course there's always an ideal physique, which changes with the taste of times.

People need to stop being oversensitive about comments on women's (and men's) bodies, especially in cases where one's body is one's instrument (most especially in classical ballet, where your muscle tone and proportions is an integral part of your stage image, the line you are able to project).

Now figure skating is a sport, so the standards are different. Still, the performance aspect of this sport means that a skater's body is his or her instrument, in a similar but not identical way to professional dancers. So it is important to take caution and care about your physical conditioning. And there's absolute freedom for an audience member to say they prefer one skater's physical proportions, musculature, line, etc than another. No one is equating fragility with beauty here.

I'd like to know what type of conditionning and working out exercises she does. I once watched a short documentary about Mathilde Froustey's new life in SanFrancisco. She is a former ballet dancer with Paris Opera and moved 3 years ago to the US. There, she changed her training routine and works with a personal coach to develop her muscles and get stronger WITHOUT changing her body and overall look. Cherry on the cake, she is also less prone to injuries and has not been injured in 3 years.
Dancers have "special" needs. They need to be strong but they also need very flexible and elongated muscles. It's all about finding the right balance. And it's not easy..at all.
I am very happy that Gabby is doing everything to improve and yet stay safe. But I also hope the training routine she has is not going to change her as a dancer and she'll keep those fantastic qualities she has been working her all life for.

Why are you so upset? Isn't everyone entiteled to their own opinion, when it is a matter of taste?
I wasn't "bodyshaming" anyone. If I came across like that - be sure it wasn't meant that way.

Oh I did not see .... The ISU page of their bibliography shows their music programs 2018/2019 :hap93::hap85::cheer:

That's awesome, but why the three typos? It's "porteña" (primavera- spring- is feminine) and Yamagata. Aaaarrggghh. The teacher in me wants to scratch my eyes out when I see this. Double checking before hitting "send" was all one had to do...

The ISU doesn't seem to believe in editors. Or spellcheck, sometimes.

I see the wait for competition day is getting nerves on edge again, so, fun topic: how cute is Guillaume's new puppy? https://www.tumblr.com/dashboard/2/180243659215
