Gabriella Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron

Thought so that this choice of music is something for all the dance nerds out there. Yep, Guillaume is not afraid of being a nerd about dancing...good. Some people won't like that but there you are. :-) There is so much to discover in this FD that the first time won't be enough to see all....like the judges and referees you have to go to all the training as well so that you have a chance to see it several times...;-) Actually, how difficult it is to even imitate P/C a bit was visible with the Parsons....that was quite awkward as a FD.[/QUOTE

you may be right. i am kind of a dance nerd. and i love singer/ songwriter music. so no wonder i love them and especially this free dance, their all time best imho....

I wonder what Rachael Yamagata herself thinks of it. Does anyone know if she made a comment anywhere?

I certainly like Duet very very much, and I certainly respect her as an artist. Sunday Afternoon is just not my thing, and I find the transition towards it not really working. I'll live with it and it'll grow on me, and I understand that they wanted a second piece that was more oomph or so. Just wish they had found something that I equally found so beautiful as the Duet part.

Would be nice to hear her reaction. She must have some interest in this I suppose.

I really want to hear the B-ESp guys on this FD. I discovered GG with the Europeans FD, B-ESp commentary in which they say: "You cannot comprehend how difficult that was. And how easy they made it look." I feel that this FD was that accomplishment squared.

Absolutely, I just love him. Such an enthralling talent and for me when I discovered him at the Tchaikovsky competition his truly immersive and personal way of interpretation immediately reminded me of P/C. There are a lot of great interviews of him on YT.

I, too, heard him first (online) at the same Tchaikovsky competition! And yes, you are quite right in making parallels with P/C. And this is why Debargue popped right into my mind when you mentioned a 'young French pianist'. I would also draw comparisons with pianist Evgeni Bozhanov who I encountered (also online) at a Van Cliburn competition years ago. Like Debargue, he did not win the prize as he did not fit the 'mold' (much like P/C who do not fit the current ice dancing 'mold'). Bozhanov captures so many nuances in tone when he plays in much the same way that P/C do in their ice dancing. I watch their performances multiple times to discover and rediscover all these nuances that I've missed in the first pass. Like P/C, Bozhanov is also known for his originality and creativity, and his total absorption into the music.

Is there anyone who could translate the Russian commentaries available out there on both the RD and FD ? For the RD, the versions are available on Dailymotion I believe. Thanks in advance.

Here is their FD commented by Nathalie Pechalat and Alban Préaubert and another woman who I still couldn't identify. I did translate in FSU but leave it here for you to enjoy:

In the intro she doesn't say anything new but a summary of their late start of the season and how they had a great start yesterday with the RD.
End of the FD (she sounds impressed): "Beautiful program from P/C, we had shivers here, this program was very moving. It was the French in all their glory. It was beautifully skated, everything, whether the feelings or the edges, feels full and feels like a whole. Every seconds is interpreted with a welcome change of pace at the end which makes what they want to convey more pertinent. We were expecting something like this(the change of pace) and they gave it to us with as usual a lot of intensity and also intimacy. We always feel like we're in their bubble. They are not "generous" per say and this is not meant as a negative. Their aim is not to entertain us but rather to invite us in which they excel at, it is their style."
Then the guy, who I ignore the name starts talking. He was worried when he heard the choice of music and expected for the first time to be disappointed by P/C's program (a bit like me tbh) but seeing it, he thinks they absolutely transcended the music with their quality especially their softness. Natalie adds that the softness is not monotonous though which makes it beautiful and moving.
Commenting the scores, Natalie mentions how one could see the difference of quality even though she loved the Canadians.

Sorry but the best pianist of all time is Dinu Lipatti. He is known for the wonderful sound he succeeds to get from the piano (a bit like P/C flow quality with the ice), his musicality and so on. You sometimes think you hear an angel, like when you see P/C, you think you see angels.

Of all the Russian commentaries I only found the one from Match. It's not worth translating. That guy is a hater. He's hated them for years, and I don't know why. Don't remember when it all started. And the better they perform the more he hates them. Biased and blind judges, short legs, boring music etc. And he repeats this ugly stuff every time. I don't know, maybe he's the best guy in the universe when he does not watch P/C but when it comes to them...:disapp:
As far as I know, Tarasova and Averbukh liked the performance but I can't find their commentary.

Long legs is with no doubts the main Russian criteria for dancers. They don’t mind if they miss anything else as musicality sense of rhythm, but they must have long legs, the same selection as a prima ballerina, at least physically. They seem to believe you can make dance properly anybody so the only difference will be in the length of the legs. I wonder how Usova Zhulin had a chance in their time. As a matter of fact, long legs Grishuk Platov got the OG. Stepanova’s legs have it all... to please the Russian criterias, I mean, Zahorsky as well. No chance for Guillaume or Gaby in that respect.

Who is this guy ??? Better not to translate him indeed. What the heck with the legs ? It sounds a lot like jealousy to me but hey ...
The Canadian are not too bad here, especially Kurt who sounds like he likes them a bit in spite of himself though  but just can't deny they are outstanding skaters.

Guillaume has long legs, no?? And Gaby isn't petite? I don't really get it. Yes, Alexandra Stepanova has the body of a model, but not really of a ballerina. I think you can't have a ballerina body, you need to have more muscle bulk for ice skating. I find bodies like Stepanova's totally delightfully beautiful, but I find Gaby also very beautifully proportioned and totally graceful. It's not a big difference. If only people with a body like Stepanova should be allowed in ice dance, we can have a very very tiny competition. Anyway, I don't see how Tessa compares to Alexandra, if the Match guy considered that V/M were a worthy winner. I may be completely wrong, but I suppose that if he is a hater, he probably adores V/M? :-D

Ok, I saw it.
Their new spin looks really nice (at the end).
I heard people complaining that it is "the same style" again. But how so?
The second half of their FD was a clearly different pace. Their Shortdance was also clearly different!

long legs is a ballet term. it means the extension of the leg, not the length itself. but at least to me, they do have extremely good extensions...
