German champion Genrikh Gartung is entering his first full senior season after a year that saw him balance both junior and senior competition. The 18-year-old captured his first national senior title, competed at both the European and World Championships, and finished 11th at Junior Worlds. Now, he plans to focus exclusively on senior events.

Some interesting points from the interview:
  • His new Free Skate will be set to "Enjoy the Silence" by Depeche Mode.
  • His Short Program will use music from Pulp Fiction, choreographed by Nikolai Morozov
  • One of his goals for next season is a top-10 finish at Europeans.

Discussion Questions

  • Do you think Gartung made the right decision to leave juniors behind, or would another mixed junior/senior season have been beneficial?
  • Are you intrigued by his music choices? Which program are you more curious to see?
  • What would you consider a successful 2026–27 season for him?
  • Looking ahead, where do you think Gartung fits among the next generation of European men?
For those who have followed his development over the last few seasons: what do you see as his biggest strength, and what area still needs the most work?

I have my eye on Genrikh for a while now. So nice to see a German man (never mind what he was originally) coming up. Until now, he's a real 'menner'. When his SP is not too good, his FS will be. And vice versa. And it seems, he is going to focus on that and improve. Not trying to get more quads. Excellent.

Good for him not to do both Jrs and Srs any more. That is so many competitions!

I was impressed with the improvement I saw in Genrikh when watching his practice in Oberstdorf where I met him for the interview. He was working with his choreographer Joti Polizoakis on the Free Skating and it looked really good. I'm excited to see him in competition and fingers crossed he will be able to show all his improvement.

I can't say much about him, I haven't been paying that much attention, but he was competing in Poland last autumn - I took my mom there with me to enjoy some live skating and she was very impressed by his quad flip - she is not a skating fan, but it was indeed impressively huge jump, big enough to make casual spectators (including my mom) gasp.
