After the disaster of Skate America, I have gone back to doing the scientific stuff first to see what it looks like before filtering in my gut.

Well, it wasn’t just because of Skate America. It was also because, in most of the categories, there are an awful pile of names that we haven’t seen up against each other before. And there are even a few names that I have never even heard tell of before!

In the Ladies, I was so tempted to put in an “all-Russian” podium of Alena, Liza and Polina (in that order… :slink: ) But, although she has been really inconsistent the past couple of years, I still have faith in Kanako. So, I put her ahead of the American Russian.

After how well Tursynbaeva did at Skate America, and how well Osmond did at the Nebelhorn, it did pain me to put them outside the Top 5. But, being realistic, if the Russians, Americans and Kanako all skate cleanly, I honestly can’t see anybody being able to infiltrate them.

As with the Ladies, I knew who I was going to put in my Top 6 in the Men’s. But, I was in a stew over what exactly to do with Patrick Chan. On the one hand, if he is pretty rusty, I can see it being an Yuzu, Dice, and Nam podium. BUT, if he is half-decent, he should still be capable of getting a silver. So, at first, I put Chan in 4th. But then I had a change of heart, and have now put him in 2nd.

It will be interesting to see where he does finish.

For the rest outside the Top 6, I just stuck with the PB order. Circumstances meant that I’m doing this last minute, and I’m not as familiar with them as I am with the others.

In Pairs, I knew exactly the order I was going to put the Top 3 in. And I knew who my next 3 couples were going to be as well, but just wasn’t sure what order to put them in. Ziegler / Kiefer have been doing well so far this season. Bazarova / Deputat showed promise as a new couple last season. And, although I haven’t seen Castelli / Tran yet, they were VERY impressive with previous partners.

In the end, I went with the reverse of the order I described them in there now. I know I am taking a chance with Castelli / Tran. After all, they may end up like what Moore-Towers / Marinaro were last season – a couple that were VERY impressive with previous partners, but who just didn’t seem to work when put together.

Speaking of Moore-Towers / Marinaro, I didn’t know which of the Canadian couples to put at the bottom. I am just not familiar enough with Grenier / Deschamps to know where to put them. So, since they had a slightly higher PB, I gave Kirsten and Michael the benefit of the doubt.

It was a similar situation in Dance. I knew exactly what order I wanted to put the Top 6 in. But, I just didn’t know what order in which to put the 2 remaining Canadian couples at the bottom. So, I went by their PB’s.

So, if my predictions are anything to go by, it looks like it is going to be a mixed bag for the Canadians. Apart from the Ladies (where I have 1 mid-field and the other fighting over last place), in every category I have Canadians fighting for the podium, and fighting for last place. :slink:

I like how the last three have gone against the grain when predicting the ladies winner(with a different lady)... one problem I have with the various "prediction games" is that there's not really much reward for going against the grain with regards to whom everyone things will win... I think Tuktamysheva has the best odds to win, but I only put it at 50% at best... the hard part is figuring out who would beat her.

There is reward for going against the grain if you end up being right though!

Ladies are tough, ah? After the short program in the lead with mighty 45 points is Winnie_20. Trailing are 11 people with 40. And 30 people have 35. The rest is 30 and below. Can't remember such a miserable result. Let's see if it is going to change tomorrow.

oh no

Just as I was done posting my predictions- before I even had the time to x out the tab -my cat tore through under my computer desk, ripping out my cords, & shutting off my entire computer setup! I fear this is a horrible omen. I will get the most minimal point in the history of the PG :drama:

You guys- it wasn't a bad omen for just my predictions, but for the massive bombings we've witnessed among the singles' events today :jaw:

In the Ladies, I was so tempted to put in an “all-Russian” podium of Alena, Liza and Polina (in that order… :slink: ) But, although she has been really inconsistent the past couple of years, I still have faith in Kanako. So, I put her ahead of the American Russian.

I can't help worrying if this was the moment that the results of the Ladies SP was sealed.

The figure skating gods didn't appreciate me even thinking of putting somebody ahead of Liza, and so punished all three of the skaters I was originally intending on putting on the podium.

All I can say is thank goodness they didn't do anything to Kanako.

Here's hoping they are not giving me a false sense of relief before punishing her in the FS...
