Gracie Gold's prospects for 2018 season?

Perhaps I am the last to know ... but I just noticed that Alex O is officially listed on Gracie's IN bio as the third of her three coaches.
The order is: Zoueva, Epstein, Ouriashev [misspelled :ohwell:].

I am aware that Gracie [ETA: when still with Frank] worked with Alex O before Nats [ETA: and that Alex of course had been her coach until she moved to Carroll in 2013].
But was not aware that Alex apparently has been elevated to (more or less?) equal footing with Zoueva and Epstein on Gracie's team.

Really? What about actually competing? I've always been under the impression that USFS required skaters to pass a monitoring session before doing ANY international competitions.

I do not know the precise definition (if any?) of "monitoring session", so will steer clear of that term.

USFS does require ISP skaters to demonstrate competition readiness.
An excerpt from the Competition Readiness Agreement:

Program Performance. I, the skater, agree that I will perform my completed competition programs at a minimum of one eligible or “otherwise approved” event at least 35 days prior to departure for my first international competition of the season. Eligible events include Pairs Camp, Chesapeake Open (Dance), Broadmoor Open, Skate Detroit, Glacier Falls, Lake Placid Ice Dance Championships, Philadelphia Summer Championships, and Champs Camp. “Otherwise approved” events may include any competition that is held in the United States at which official detailed results sheets are readily available and which I have had individually pre-approved directly by my Discipline Group Chair and the International Committee Chair. This component will be considered complete when U.S. Figure Skating receives a copy of the detailed results sheet from the coach or the skater. Under special circumstances exceptions can be made only with prior unanimous approval from the International Committee Chair, Discipline Group Chair, and U.S. Figure Skating Senior Director, Athlete High Performance.

Technical Feedback (required for all skaters assigned to a Senior Grand Prix competition, otherwise strongly recommended for the 2017-18 season). I, the skater, agree to participate in a technical feedback session that will provide me with constructive feedback regarding my competitive programs and/or components for the upcoming season. I may complete the performance feedback session by way of (a) video review (i.e. I may submit a video via the Athlete High Performance database (Ex3) of both short and free programs for technical specialists to comment on, with the understanding that this video-based feedback may not be returned to us for 30 days), and/or (b) indepth technical feedback session (i.e. I may apply for a pre-arranged in-depth technical feedback session at any of the summer competitions [Pairs Camp, Dance Camp, High Performance Singles Camp, Skate Detroit, Glacier Falls, Lake Placid Ice Dance Championships, Philadelphia Summer Championships], where I may or may not be competing), and/or (c) Champs Camp (i.e. if I am assigned to a Senior Grand Prix competition).

It reminded me of Christina Gao's situation in her last competitive season, when she had two GP assignments, and definitely did not show much competitive readiness. She earned them from the previous season's performance, but actually was in a semi-retirement state due to college. She received less than 80 points in her FS at COC. I wished she had withdrawn from the competition. It was just so embarrassing to watch... Same as Mao's all doubles program at Trophée de France last year...But for both, I knew the reasons.

And for those who haven't clicked, Grant says
"Dear Skating World, stop gossiping. It's bad for your health.
#BeKind"

My already great respect for Grant has increased ten-fold:clap::clap::clap:

It's an admirable sentiment but come on...get real. :laugh2::laugh2::laugh2:

This is FIGURE SKATING!! (in my "This is SPARTA!" voice ) 80% of what we do as fans is gossip and speculate. The other 20% is actually watching the competition, after which we promptly return to more gossip and speculation.

I don't know what's going on with Gracie, just like none of us do. All we can do is go by what we see/read, and by the sounds of it, she's not looking like she's going to be ready to make a run at this Pyeongchang team.

I feel like 2016 really killed Gracie's passion for the sport. Sometimes people experience heartbreak that is just too much to come back from. This is all based off of the fact that she doesn't appear to be in fighting shape. Who knows? Maybe she's playing a game with everyone, pretending to be capable of nothing more than doubles only to bust out the 3-3s at her first event. Then again maybe she's still out of shape with the beginning of the season about 2 months away. I don't know...I guess we'll find out soon.

This season is going to be so entertaining.

Last year the image of a cartoon popped up in my mind. Unfortunately I suck at drawing and could never do it justice trying to draw it myself.

The cartoon is titled "The Backloaders". It shows Gracie and Julia facing each other in an ice rink with skates on their feet, carrying backpacks which are so huge that they have grown over their heads and make them buckle. The backpacks are full of people waving flags and shouting. For Gracie the flags are the Stars and Stripes and the people shout "USA! USA!" and "Go for gold, Gracie!". For Julia the flags are Russian and the shouts are "Russi-ya! Russi-ya!" and "Dawai, Julitchka!". Gracie points at her backpack with a desperate face and says "… and then they have the nerve to complain about Evgenia‘s backloading!!!". With a depressed face, Julia answers "Da, ia snaju ..." ("Yes, I know ...")

I love the visual image... except I would change the dialogue (or caption) to something like, "Too bad we don't earn any bonus points from this type of backloading"

I think Marina and Alex are friends and sometimes they work together (Alex sent Gracie to her back in 2013 to work on the components) considering that Marina isn't a technician.

This might be a good thing.

Gracie Gold doesn't need to work a lot on the components besides the expression, living more these programs, find something that she really enjoys to skate.

But with the technical side she has to work a lot more, as we said even the 2a was an issue last season.

I hope that she has started to work with him two-three months ago and not now because otherwise it will be the same situation that happened at nationals: too little too late.

It would depend on how USFS considers her team Olympic medal from Sochi. Reigning Olympic and World medalists have automatic byes to Nationals, but I do not believe USFS ever announced whether the team Olympic medal counts. Otherwise, you have to be top 5 at the previous Nationals to have a bye to the current Nationals, or have GP/ other events that conflict with Regionals/ Sectionals. At any rate, I do not think double jumps will get anybody through Sectionals anymore, though the Pacific Coast can be a fairly weak section. Two years ago, two of the ladies who qualified through PC sectionals did not have triples.

Assuming the Olympic team medal doesn't count (and it shouldn't), it sounds like Gracie would have to compete in at least one GP event in order to qualify for Nationals, even if she comes in last place doing only doubles. OTOH, if she withdraws from the GP events she'd probably to qualify at Sectionals.

I don't think discussing reality is gossiping. Do people get this offended about discussion in other sports?

There is a difference between commentary and gossip. Commentary is a fine and wonderful thing. Speculation, such as I think skater X is a better choice for the Olympics than Skater Y, is a fine and wonderful thing as long as it is not personal and hurtful.

As for what other people say on the Internet, I could care less. As for what other people say for other sports, I sat with the "tough guys" of Southwest Philly in the 700 section of the Vet at Eagles games. If you don't know what that is, it makes internet chatter look like lullabies. I've heard it all. It doesn't mean I think it's right to say it about Gracie.

I still stand with Grant.:agree:

but do you even know he was referring to Gracie Gold? He could have been talking about a number of things...

Absolutely true, so I stand with him in the broader sense.

Not that I expect it to affect "everybody does it" and "gosh darn, you just can't *handle* it" as arguments. Sigh.

I wish Gracie well. And Ashley and Karen and Mirai and Mariah (and Katelyn and Gaby;) )

OMG.....YES!!!! There is a HUGE scandal going on in tennis right now!! Maria Sharapova is playing in her first Grand Slam since returning from her PED Suspension. She had a bad draw when she was slated to world #2 Simona Halep......Well, Maria won the match and people are furious because she's ranked outside the top 100 and was given a wildcard into the "Main Draw". All other players ranked in the 100's have to play 3 matches just make it to the main draw.....Maria got skip the qualifying and was a much fresher than the other qualifier's and that made all the difference in their long 3 set match.....Poor Simona was devastated because if she'd won the tournament, she would have become the new #1. She lost a TON of points by not making to the QF's and will drop out of the top 5........:drama:

Are people in the tennis world saying not to talk about Maria's suspension, even though it could be a factor in how she performs?

Yes they are.....In fact, Canadian #1 Genie Bouchard was quoted saying, " Wild Card's are supposed to be given to promising up and comers, or those who are returning from injury. Maria doesn't fit either description." She was either praised, or blasted by the posters on this site. Personally, I agreed with Genie. The thing about Maria is that she not only sells tickets, she also has her candy shops in New York, and I think she has a place there as well. Outside the US players, Maria is easily the most popular female player with the US Open crowd.
