Hersh on COI -- Bad News

wow...good thing we didn't pre-order tickets yet for this years Philly stop.
I wonder what all this means and what exactly will happen????

From the Chicago Tribune . . .

Champions on Ice, the top figure skating tour in the United States for more than a quarter-century, is dead. An announcement is expected in about a week, according to Tribune sources familiar with the situation. The handful of Champions dates tentatively scheduled for 2008 will be cancelled, and the tour will be subsumed by its rival, Stars on Ice, the sources said.

WOW! How sad, very sad, - not just for COI but also for figure skating.

I have many fond memories of attending this show. It was always spectacular. I attended COI at the Nassau Coliseum, NY (capacity about 18,000). Back in the 80s through the 90s the Coliseum was always filled to capacity. I just took out my Champions on Ice 25th Anniversary book and took a look at all of the wonderful, talented skaters that have appeared in this show over the years. There is a cast photo for each year, as well as countless individual photos of the skaters. There is also a recap of each show, along with interesting tidbits about the year in skating, the skaters, etc. Great reminiscing! Sorry, though, that my trip down memory lane had to be for because of the cancellation of the show.

For those who have this book, take a look at the photo on pages 8 & 9. WOW!

This makes me sad, I only got to go for the first time EVER last year, and I've already paid for my pre-sale tickets for San Jose. Front row even.

:'(

Wow. Good news for people like me who have attended SOI since the 1990's.

Why? My husband and I attended both -- we liked MK and Slute (on the COI tour) and Yags and B/S on SOI. Now, we will see fewer Oly eligible skaters because SOI tours during the competitive season.

Stars on Ice is already in progress. How can the competitive skaters join the tour? That means they would have to take time out and away from their training? Worlds is in March......

That is really sad news. We've attended COI every year since 1988. Even though we prefer SOI to COI, I feel really bad for the skaters who had the opportunities to tour with COI and won't any more.

So unless SOI adds shows after March, eligible skaters will no longer be appearing in the shows unless they fail to make the world's team and then they can join after Nationals. For skaters like Johnny, Evan, Ben and Tanith and many others, there goes the money they used to pay for their skating expenses.

Didn't SOI give some guest spots to some Oly eligible skaters -- Kimmie, Emily, etc.?

Actually, I was thinking more about skaters like Surya Bonaly, Victor Petrenko, and Rudi Galindo.

Very sad, but I had an inkling. I tried to see the show in two different cities last year and both were cancelled. I missed a show in my town when my child was sick as an infant ( we had great tickets!), and SOI never comes here. I am the biggest figure skating fan that never saw a live performance or competition at this point.

Oh Toni....I HOPE not!!!! But I fear, and have been fearing for the last 2 or 3 years, that you might be right!

I don't know how SOI would integrate a lot of new cast members. Traditionally, it's a small ensemble cast with fun group #'s. This is why I preferred SOI over COI.

The only reason I went to COI was to watch Kwan and enjoyed the eligibles, too. I enjoyed the other skaters, too, but a lot of them were getting too gimmicky and not even skating up to their Oly standard (i.e. all doubles when they where doing 5 or 6 triples when competing).

I think it's probably too late for this tour, but maybe next year.

Oly-eligibles have performed in SOI for a couple of tour stops each. They do their exhibition # and don't participate in the group #'s. So, they might be in the show for about a week and usually appear at stops near their training facility.

Considering how big skating is right now in Europe and Asia, I would not surprise that now tours during the off season would start there.
When Plushenko and Aberbukh had their tour across Russia at the same time, that never stop that each venue was pretty much sold out.
So my guess is that the DOI in Japan would get a little longer and them maybe there won't a be a complete tour but there would more shows across Europe and Asia now that organizers from there know that a lot of the skaters would have the time for it.

I don't know about Surya or Rudy but Viktor for sure will join a Russian tour, he did Plushenko's tour last year.
