Holiday Prep and celebrations

Is anyone doing anything (or done anything) for Lunar New Year?

I don't celebrate that holiday, but I did put up some decor for Valentine's Day.

I have a large flag in my picture window, red with hearts on it. It's surrounded by red and white lights. In the small windows on either side of the flag are light-up hearts.

We had a zoom party. All stuffed rabbits, stuffies wearing bunny slippers, and stuffies wearing (detachable) bunny ears were invited. Also all stuffed pikas, as pikas are in the rabbit family. It was quite a crowd! Only 3 people, though.

Oh, a zoom party! That was a cool idea!

I didn't know much (or anything) about Lunar New Year, and then I saw a video about it on YouTube, and it gave me some explanations of the traditions.

So, Valentine's Day has passed. I took down my lights, and took out the St. Patrick's stuff to test it and make sure it was still working. I'm glad I did, the two light up shamrocks I put in my windows had numerous lights out, so I ordered two more. They should be here by March 1st.

Today is Fat Tuesday. Is anyone doing anything for Mardi Gras?

I just found some videos on YOUTUBE of the Holiday Stars on Ice show in Penticton. I wasn't sure where to post them, but decided this thread was as good as any.

For your belated viewing pleasure: Andrew Poje in a kilt (Kaitlin skating also)

:thank: I needed this!!
In honor of Robert Burns Day I sent some friends Scotch Whiskey infused chocolate cigars.. :palmf::hb:.. I cannot even imagine..

Well, tomorrow evening (Monday, March 6 @ sundown - through Tuesday evening @ sundown) is the joyous Jewish holiday of Purim. We read the Megillah (scroll) of the Biblical book of Esther & how she saved the Jewish people of Persia from destruction from the evil Haman. We dress in costumes & put on a Purim "shpiel" (play) complete with the reading of the Megillah & song parodies related to the Biblical story of Esther. I enjoy singing, so I look forward to participating in our synagogue's Purim Shpiel every year. This year's theme is "A Hoedown Purim," & we will be accompanied by a Jewish bluegrass band. In other years, we had had a variety of other fun themes - A Beatles Purim, a Billy Joel one, a "Hamilton" one, a Saturday Night Fever one, Sports Purim (I wore my figure skating gear - t-shirt & SOI cap for that one), Star Wars, Sesame Street, A "Greased" Purim, ... We eat a special triangular pastry called a hamantasch (named after the triangular shaped hat Haman supposedly wore). In Israel these pastries are called "Oznei Haman" - Haman's ears). Many Jewish communities also have Purim carnivals.

Once Purim is over, Passover is only one month away! Lots of preparation for that (special foods, preparing for seders)

Our cantor (the prayer leader who sings/chants the Hebrew prayers) has said many times that Purim is his favorite Jewish holiday. He really goes all out when writing the scripts & parody songs for our synagogue's Purim shpiels. The first year he was @ our synagogue he had three (!) costume changes during Purim services - a jailbird, an Elvis impersonator, & a sumo wrestler.

Oh, yes, he is! Not only is he a wonderful cantor, he is a certified mohel, the person who does the ritual circumcisions (the "bris" - covenant) for 8 day old Jewish baby boys. He is very well liked & has a reputation of providing a very gentle touch to the circumcision ceremony. In addition to all that, he is completing his rabbinical studies next month & will be officially ordained as a rabbi. We will be following his ordination ceremony on Zoom in April.

Presumably it will be on Zoom because of geography, not restrictions. The rise of zoom and other similar apps has been a good consequence of the COVID pandemic.

Our cantor has said that the in person ceremony will be limited to a few guests per family due to whatever COVID restrictions are still in place. We live in Philadelphia, PA, and the rabbinical college is in Yonkers, NY. All member families of our synagogue have received invitations to the ceremony which we will then be able to watch on Zoom.

So, did anyone do anything for St. Patrick's Day?

I had some friends who hosted a dinner party for about 25. Corned beef and cabbage, potato stew, soda bread, and a table full of desserts.

I think Easter is next for me, and then Mother's Day and Memorial Day.
