Ice Dance

Oksana Domnina does a split on the ice at the end of the Polovtsian Dance FD and has never received a deduction for it.

I thought it looked like Tessa Virtue also did a split on the ice in the FD this year but maybe I'm confused...

The Dance is not considered ended until all movement has ceased. Oksana is moving until she comes to a stop in the split. Therefore, according to the rules, the split is illegal.

^ really does make sence:agree: Just a thought of why it might be legal. No clue / guess why M/Ds knee spin slide thing is. Ice Dance does have some differences to the other disciplines (like lyrics for one)so I am not sure why either of the questionable are allowed????? I just had a guess for the splits at the end. I wonder why they are letting these "be OK" to include?

Maybe the rules are bending to appeal to the "masses." ????

Because the rules I posted were for the OD, not the FD, and Oksana's splits at the end of their routine, and Tessa's splits midway through theirs, are in the FD, where it is not an illegal move.

The FD rules are listed here - it explains why Charlie White was able to legally do a full rotation jump at the end of their FD and not be penalised, though according to this quote from Sinead Kerr talking to Sandra Stevenson, the OD half rotation rule will be changed next year [as it's a Folk/Country rhythm OD].

10. Gregory and Petukhov advanced a little from 11th with their La Cumparsita and Tanguera. They lie 2.63 behind the Italians and just 0.38 ahead of the Kerrs who were heavily penalized with a deduction of 2.0 for an illegal element and dropped three places. Small jumps are allowed of 180 degrees. The British champions went slightly beyond that. "It seems a bit mean spirited to penalize us so heavily for a minor infraction," said Sinead Kerr. That’s the same deduction as if both of us had fallen. Ironically, next year it will be legal to have a full turn."

You're welcome! :) It's an education for me, as I think in Dance since CoP the rules and regs seem to change every season, so we can't keep up with what's allowed and not allowed these days.

...As much as Gregory & Petukhov improved this season (much better line and posture, greater speed, more difficult technique, a better relationship between the two, better edging and flow, better choreography...just everything was improved with the help of their new coaches)...as much as they improved, Gregory & Pethukov's unwise choice of costumes at Worlds probably resulted in a costume deduction that dropped them a place in the standings.

All season long they competed in beautiful costumes (the burgundy ones designed by Johnny Weir) that really accentuated and highlighted their improved line and posture, costumes that helped tell the story of their free-dance and then they show up at Worlds in horrible white leotards that hide their line and wash them out to the point that you could not even see their free-dance (against the backdrop of the white ice).

What were they thinking? If I were a judge, I would have dropped them a place too.
I believe that the judges are more able than to downgrade a team for such a superficial thing as costumes. The COP is very specific in the skating standard for success. I think that this team just has fallen behind in the technical standard for dance success in the COP standard.
Davis and White, for example, just plain skated better as did the others.

I'll agree that Melissa and Denis did not skate their best (gotta wonder if their injuries caught up with them at worlds) but I don't think they're being left behind. They made amazing improvements this season and they are so strong willed and determined that I only see them continuing to improve for the next 3 years

They, one or another, seem each year to be injured or sick. While they did improve this season over the past seasons, it was not enough. At some point teams reach their limit in that they may improve but are not improved enough to hold their position compared to the teams coming up. That is just real life.

I'm not going to back down just because that's 'real life' they haven't reached that point yet from what I've seen...

and either their drs lie, or they really do get injuries, lots of skaters do... it's a sport things happen... I just have to wonder if their continuing to skate on through the injury has caught up...

gotta admire them for sticking through all the crud to stay top 10... :) they rock.

  I say skate naked... it might not raise your score per se, but it would increase viewership... sorry... will let the smart people post now... :o

A friend of mine was telling me some months ago about a show she saw in Vegas called "Nudes on Ice".
She told me the name of the show and I said, "Ooh! I'd love to see Alexei Yagudin in THAT!"
But no, apparently all the performers were ladies. That made me a sad panda.

Hi! Recently, La Rhumba announced that the rhythm for next year's OD will be "Country/Folk". I was wondering, based on this rhythm, which teams do you think will have an advantage/disadvantage?

For once the CD and OD in Warsaw re the top 3 was judged fairly. I simply cannot understand the constant moaning from people about why DenStav did not win? Because they skated poorly in the first 2 portions of the event and the other 2 couples skated better - that's why! Did you read any of the Euros threads or actually watch the skating?
The wuzrobbing wasn't that they didn't win gold, but that they came in 3rd in the FD, which many people thought they should have won. They skated more powerfully than any other team, with greater speed, and that makes a delible impression. No one in my section could believe they were in third; many of us thought they'd pass Del/Schoes in the standings with that FS. (I'm happy that Del/Schoes did win, but even looking at the protocols, I don't understand why their PCS were the lowest of the top 3 teams.)

Belbin's faulty twizzles in the FD were ignored, and given a +1 GOE by some Judges - astonishingly!
The required deduction for her bobble was -1 off the total GOE. They've received +2 enough times before, and -1 would net out to +1 for the final GOE. (If they had received +2, I would have been very suspicious: since there are so few +3's given out at all, the idea that they started with +3 and ended with +2 would have been dubious.)

Satisfaction with the results at Worlds depends entirely which Continent you come from, and am I surprised by the lack of outrage on this forum about the dodgy results in many people's eyes? Yes, I am actually.
Considering the endless criticisms of DomShabs results all season up to Worlds - a couple who IMO justifiably medalled at Warsaw in the top 2, and who in Nicky Slater's opinion [former Euro Bronze Medalist] "had the best FD in the competition". He watched practices and the event live, commentating for Eurosport.
I think it's true that geography often shows up in personal bias. I think B/A were scored rightly in the OD -- they are OD dancers, and it was fine performance from them -- but that the Del/Schoes were sunk in the CD's, the traditional place for miring teams in an untenable position. I would also have scored them higher in the FD, which would have given them the bronze, which I thought they deserved. I was at Euros, and thought the Dom/Shas on the podium was well-deserved, but from video, I don't think their Worlds performance was as strong, and their program does have a lot of 2-footed skating (vs. B/A's cross-overs).

Yes it was great, thankfully not like at Euros (FD)...Actually it was like in Euros but this time Del/S were the victims

Well, I'd agree with hockeyfan that B&A are definitely "OD Dancers", and as a shorter team [in comparison to the taller types like DomShabs] the hops and little jumps will suit their style, so I can see them coming up with a Green Acres type Country hoe down OD that should do well next year.

Though I don't know if I could handle that and the Yankee Polka CD in the same competition.

After the umpteenth Tango (following last year's Latin OD) and the Rhumba AND the Tango at Worlds, I was pretty much sick and tired of latin rhythms. I think the country/folk OD will get old rather quickly.
