Iida Karhunen

Iida Karhunen (born 5th April 2008) is a women's singles skater representing Finland.

She is the 2025 Finnish National champion, the 2023 and 2024 Finnish junior national champion, the 2023 European Youth Olympic Festival champion and a 3-time Volvo Open junior champion.

Iida had a great JGP debut in 2022. That was the first year I watched JGP, and I remember being very impressed with this girl who fearlessly attacked her programs. Her 4th place at JWC 2024 was a thrill, and I’d really like to see her get a JGP medal this year. Iida has been working on 4S, and I noticed that her 3S is looking really nice. She put the 3S first in her FS at her 2nd Grand Prix. Will she try the quad at JWC?

Congratulation to Iida on becoming an Olympian! What an amazing senior debut season. I have enjoyed watching her at several senior events, and there are non-geoblocked videos of several of her competitions available for anyone who wants to see. I like the quirky and original short program she has this season, and her Swan Lake is looking more refined in its second season. Have fun in Milan, Iida!

Before leaving to Milan, Iida had "Vanhojen tanssit". in English: it is "the dances of the old" (students), which is a formal prom held in Finnish lukio, upper secondary schools to the second year students (upper secondary shcool lasts usually three years, but most top athletes do it in four years as students can choose how much courses they take). Students celebrate fact that the 11th graders are now the oldest students of the school - the oldest before them have done their compulsory courses and concentrate to study for the final exams.
