Injuries & Ills: 2013-14

I was surprised when Paul did not appear at Skate for Hope. Piper did the group numbers and a few other quick turns with Max Aaron but Paul was definitely not in the cast. I've asked about him on another forum....but no one has replied. Sorry to hear he is injured, especially just before the Olympic season.

that is sad. But as for Sweden winning podium spots leave that to Korpi; the Swedish ladies should be thrilled with top ten inthis competitive skating market.

Korpi? I dont' think so. You picked the wrong lady. She has nothing swedish in her, at least not more than the Helgessons.

Kiira competes for Finland, where she is actually known as the Ice Princess. The Helgessons represent Sweden (unfortunately, they will only receive one Olympic spot, so it seems that the sisters will have to battle it out). I don't envy Mrs. Helgesson's job...

@PiperGilles just tweeted a promising update (without any direct mention of Poirier's injury):

Just finished our shortdance! And let me tell you it's pretty dang sexy! Can't wait for all of you guys to see it and of course the outfits

And thanks to MF for your reporting from Skate for Hope.

Am I naive to believe that it seems possible that Gilles/Poirier's choregraphy could be completed even before P's mobility has fully returned to normal?
I don't claim to know how a choreographer works, but could s/he design their SD with P "going through the motions" on a limited scale (whether off or on ice)? (Obviously, the situation would be less than ideal, but would it be possible to finish a first version of their SD, subject to future revisions?)

Every injury is different, so perhaps Poirier will need far more time to recover than Weaver did. OTOH, maybe he will require less time.
FWIW: Eight weeks after her injury, Kaitlyn Weaver was skating again. Six weeks after her injury, she was on her feet again off the ice (without crutches). See chronology below.

.... I have been told by several people that attended a skating event on May 4 in Mississauga, Canada that it was announced at the event that Poirier would not be skating because he had fractured his ankle the day before in practice.

Almost seven weeks now have passed since Poirier's injury. Just sayin'.

FWIW, Weaver's injury/recovery timeline:
- Fri, Dec 14:
Kaitlyn Weaver injures her ankle. On Tue Dec 18, she has surgery.

- Thu, Jan 24 (~ six weeks post-injury):
Weaver is able to stand unassisted (off ice) on two feet -- i.e., without crutches.

- Thu, Feb 7 (~ eight wks post-injury):
Weaver returns to the ice.

- Thu, Mar 14 (~ thirteen wks post-injury):
Weaver/Poje place sixth in the SD at London Worlds -- with a personal best score.

oops I meant scandinavian heritage. too many good skaters for them to really medal.

Poirier makes this very brief mention of his injury in a Q and A posted on Jun 20:
"I am actually speaking to you with a broken leg, so I have not been active for over a month now."
See more at: http://www.cmha-yr.on.ca/olympic-athlete-paul-poirier-supports-ride-dont-hide/#sthash.yP1kWOKj.dpuf

[I saw the link in a tweet from Jeremy Ten.
But Poirier himself so far has not tweeted the same link. (He did retweet a link to a general page for the charitable cause he supports that is the primary subject of the Q and A.)]

More re Poirier:

Jayne and Chris ‏@torvillanddean
I have been choreographing with Piper Gilles, but Paul her partner is recovering from a broken ankle. So I've been partner. Very sore 

ETA: BTW, @PiperGilles retweeted Dean's tweet, so at least at this point, she isn't trying to hide P's injury.

So sorry about Paul's injury. Wish him a speedy and more importantly 'complete' recovery. :)
And hopefully they have enough time to prepare themselves to compete come Nationals, assuming Gilles/Poirier has no problem with minimum tech score in order to advance to the Olympic/Worlds., don't they?

I heard from a reliable source Chris Kneirim had to have surgery on his ankle the other day. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

twirlingaround, welcome to Golden Skate! Thanks for posting this sad news.

I also heard Britney Simpson had to have shoulder surgery.

Had not heard about Britney Simpson. Awful news about both these teams. But at least it's off season so if injuries happen better now then later.

It might be the off season in terms of competition but this is when the real training happens. This is a setback for K/S they really had momentum. Hope he's not out for very long. This is what i was worried about top teams or skaters having injuries heading into the Olympic season.
