international counter match live report anyone?

How are you watching? Are you not in the United States? I subscribe to icenetwork and I have not seen anyway to see it there.

Go to fsvids.net

I am uploading Caroline Zhang's SP to youtube. She is absolutely amazing!!

Here are some notes (mainly jumps) on all the competitors:
http://www.xanga.com/kwantifiable

Caroline touched down on the 3F/3T, as well as apparently under-rotated.

Poor Mirai had a tough outing, only two triples -- 3F and 3R(+2R) - landed cleanly.

Rachael's 3F/3T was also under-rotated.

Bebe also only had 2 clean triples.

Early season nerves for everyone, hopefully!

I just added a YouTube Player with the first five vids from this competition. It's at the page top and features the programs of Mao Asada, Johnny Weir, Mirai Nagasu, Caroline Zhang and Daisuke Takahashi. As other Japan vs USA Counter Match videos are uploaded to YouTube, they will be added to this player.

I think this would be better perspective:

Ladies SP...
I agree that this is the right way to look at the results. I don't think the ISU has any mechanism for sanctioning team events. So this is four separate contests, SP, LP, men and women.

Weir had no real competition in his segment, but great for Carriere to stick with Takahashi!

Considering all the errors, the judging must have been pretty soft. (Well, it is a cheesefest after all  ).

Bebe scored 92 points for a program with only two triples landed and with two falls. Her all-time best is only 6 point higher (98.87) for an outstanding and nearly clean performance at Four Continents a couple of years ago.

I can't wait for Skate America. Is Miki vulnerable after all, or was this just an unlucky once-in-a-blue-moon disaster for her?

Bebe

I saw the event and Beatrisa did more than just 2 clean triples. She fell on 2 triples (one of which was downgraded) and landed 4 triples and a double axel/double toe/single toe combination at the end of her program. Some of her triples had minues on the GOE but she still complete four. It actually became a skate off between Bebe and Fumi (there was about a 2 point lead for the US before these 2 girls skated) and Bebe's overall point total was higher than Fumi's which secured the win for team USA.

Thanks for the correction, Smoothskater, and welcome to the forum. Post often, post long! :agree:

Hey, that's wonderful, thank you!

I liked Fumie's music, and bits of her choreography, too bad the jumps were not there for her.

I actually liked Mirai's skating a bit more than at Lake Placid, even though obviously the jumps and the flow were much better there. Somehow, despite the "doll" section, Mirai has managed to make this program seem more mature. I think this will help her when she competes in senior national's. Too bad her jumps fell apart in the second half. It felt like once she had her second fall, she lost her confidence in all the remaining jumps. Coupled with the fact that all her harder jumps were loaded into the second half for the bonus, her total score really took a hit. I wonder if they could rearrange the jumps so it's not so end-loaded. She looked a little tired and frazzled after all her footwork sequence and spiral sequence, etc., to be doing all that jumping.

Miki's spirals looked greatly improved, despite the wobble. But she looks so unhappy and miserable all around, even beforehand in the interviews. I wonder if her lonely summer of hard training in the US demoralized her rather than strengthened her.

Most likely her performance was nothing related to hard training. More likely it was due to being worn out from traveling to Europe (Croatia Cup JGP) at the end of Sept. and then returning to the states with less than a week's turnaround before the long flight to Japan. Her bodyclock just never caught up to all that jetlag.

Maybe that would have caused Mirai's jump troubles, but Miki ANDO merely went from the States to Japan ;) Miki's on the Senior Grand Prix circuit, and not beginning until Skate America, I believe! Her troubles could be caused by the fact she's felt isolated during the summer...

It must be a bit of a surprise and embarrassment for Japan, the host country, to have lost both the men's and women's team competitions. It seems to me that the whole thing was set up for the US to take the men's, and Japan to take the women's.

But for the ladies -- somehow with Mao's combo omission, Miki's fall, and Fumie's unremarkable debut of her LP -- team Japan with numerous world medals managed to lose out to the American girls, none of whom have even been to Worlds yet (nor will qualify this year with the possible exception of Bebe).

Well, considering the extra wear & tear due to the traveling and jetlag, as well as interruptions to training, not to mention the proximity to all the JGP events and the upcoming SA, at least the American skaters have the consolation of winning $20000 each, which probably just about covers all their basic training/travel costs for the major part of this season! Especially good for junior skaters like Caroline, Mirai, and Rachael, who probably don't have any sponsors nor have much income from shows yet. :agree:

I find it interesting reading the different news articles, some of which proclaim Johnny Weir to be leading the American team, some anoint Bebe Liang, and the Canadian Press apparently thought Caroline Zhang stood out the most:

It must be more than irritating to the veterans such as Johnny & Bebe to be thought of as being "led" by a 14-yr-old who has never even be to a "real" senior competition yet...

Personally, I don't think they have that feeling at all... only some fans might give a rats behind about such nonsense. Most likely a majority of these senior skaters are happy for the travel, experience and money; and are not all that petty about who does what and for whom.

Here's an article from Japan Times about the event:

Poor Miki. I don't think she should feel particularly responsible (and I hope that shoulder injury isn't going to exacerbate the recurrent shoulder problems she's been having! SA is only a couple of weeks away.). Mao's combo omission was a costly error, too. Probably at least 5 or 6 points, which would have put the Japanese team ahead. And Suguri also didn't skate that well. Only Ruimi Suizu skated well. I was impressed with the power, speed, and confidence that she skated with. I hope she can add the harder triples to her arsenal soon.

Sure, Miki fell on her lutz....but she fixed her lip. She did a true triple flip. Good for her.

As you can see on the video Miki had a fall on her LUTZ wich was a very rare and unexpected situation for her, that she hit the ice very hard in suddenness.
It seemes to have made her right arm numb for a while and even after her restart.
You need your arm muscles to fully function in order to balance your movements.

She had to not only wobble but to abandon holding her free leg in her sit spin.
Miki not only has fixed her lip (which sure is an accomplishment!), but has already shown very deepened sit spins in recent exhibitions holding her free leg.

She also couldn't do what she had planned in her spins, and had to decrease her rotation speed in order to guard her shoulder.

What Miki needs most now is a HEALED SHOULEDER that'll put her at ease, as well as a GOOD CHOREOGRAPHY from Morozov.
Morozov is no doubt a VERY good coach, with a superb support to Miki including mental aspects; so I strongly hope he'll refine his work by putting more effort into creativity.
