Jason Brown

Yay us indeed! :jump3: What Phil Hersh should have added was that his lack of a quad intensified his other talents and has also had an impact on men's figure skating and the importance of presentation. I honestly - and without prejudice ;) - believe that because of Jason a lot of men have upped their presentation seeing that those GOE points really add up.

I was listening to the Anything GOES podcast this evening. They skimmed through Men's but Anna said that she still feels that Jason has that 2nd spot, because Riverdance is really good and Jason with errors is still better than the others. I agree! The bulk of the episode was a very interesting and fun conversation with Gabrielle Papadakis about Ice Dance, but they always make good points. They did discuss scoring, which is a discussion point, but it's a very good podcast. They love skating and skaters and they are observant and honest and unbiased.

Question - I don't understand how step sequence levels are awarded. Why does Jason get a level 3 on the Riverdance step sequence rather than a level 4?
I've been trying to figure that out. His GOEs were mostly 5s, but what he's doing to reduce the level and by default the base value is a mystery. It could be that they want to see more speed. He's certainly accurate. Lesser skaters are getting level 4s, so they are challenging him to do something more. I trust that Tracy has asked the judges for clarification. His component scores are lower also. It's something they need to deal with. Possibly, these things will correct when he solidifies his 3A and is clean on everything. The judging in general, has been pretty harsh. Given the 3A problems, 4th is a good placement, but we all know that he can improve on what he's doing and that could be what they are telling him. That said, that short today was a big fat mess for many of the skaters. At least Jason was pretty clean. Hoping that he has a handle on the free tomorrow. He gave himself a challenging job this year, redoing Riverdance, which is so iconic and clear in people's memory and the clocklike tempo of his free, which demands all the emphasis and drama to come from him. The music doesn't help him. That said, he's doing quite well with it, but he's got room to improve and make more of a statement. Today he skated his Season's best so far. So that's a significant move forward and hopefully he can build on that now.

I can't answer any questions about judging, or why Jason doesn't get 10s for every step sequence and choreo element every time he skates, but I am so happy with the improvement.

And Mark H commenting makes it that much better(y)
Very good commentary. I hope I never have to sit through NBC commercial hell and poor audio and yackety yack commentary again. NBC makes them do that. Tara and Johnny were so good at the B Team!

I haven't watched the skate yet (the video isn't available in France, I mean to try a Finnish VPN) but at his level of skating, I believe that the most likely answer is that he missed a step from a category he didn't have in double, so he didn't have the so many different steps required for a Level 4?

That step sequence was incredible. A movement on every beat, passion, excitement. I do not understand, even the GOE should have been higher. I think Jason and Tracy will go back and do everything they.can for the judges to reward his greatness fairly. The triple axels on his practice videos look so good. He will work on consistency and nerves.

That's what hit me when I watched last night. He hit every beat of the music with something. Excellent choreography and it was skated so well.

Such a beloved performer and competitive fighter. Admire his spirit. Love his style.
Has he said whether he will continue competing after this season? Olympics or not?

Welcome to Goldenskate and to the Jason FanFest.

Jason has been very cagy about his future plans, every interview he says "never say never". That said, being realistic.....😭

I adore Jason and I still think that he will be on the Olympic team next year. I am concerned that if he isn't second at Nationals in January, he will not be put on the team event. I want him to get a team medal so badly, since he has done so much for fivure skating and He IS the reason that the US. men have three Olympic spots for Milan in the first place .

I wonder if Jason could/will go to Golden Spin. There's already three US skaters going, the boys want to improve that Body of Work scores.
I wonder if Jason needs to go to Golden Spin this time? I still believe that he # 2 in the USFSA's mind. Also, I think that Jason just needs to practice Riverdance and Say Something over and over again for Nationals. Also, Jason needs to sure up the triple axel before Nationals. He has done fine at competitions with two medals and a 4th and 5th place finish. I not sure another competition before Nationals will help Jason. Thoughts?

The 3A problem seems to be nerves. Those are hard to deal with. He's committed to his programs. But he does need to be solid on the 3A to excel. None of the men today were squeaky clean. But Jason relies on those 3As to get on the podium and he tried today, but it didn't happen. It was a festival of slippery ice and nerves for all the men today. And Jason fought as hard as he could to make that program work, even with the missed 3As. The promise is there. Conquering the nerves is harder. I hope that whichever comp he does next, he will be able to show all the work he's done on those programs. They will be beautiful, when they are done clean and at the top of his game. I was very glad that he fought through and gave it it all that he had. It was a tough competition to watch.

Jason is very well trained and seems comfortable with his programs, so I would agree that it was nerves here. Almost everyone looked shaky and didn't do their best. There must be even more pressure toward the end of the GP series when they all want to impress the judges and stand out. I'm sure that he is disappointed about not making the final, but I doubt that his standing as second US man is in any jeopardy.

I certainly hope that his current results are enough, with a good showing at Nats, to get that spot that he wants. I'm sure he would have enjoyed going to GPF, but that would be 3 competitions within 3 or 4 weeks? That's a lot! He'll be training for Nats from now on. The Olympic criteria is based on competition placement, not scores, so that's what gets compared. Grand Prixs count for a lot, as does Nats. He's got a 4th and a 5th in the GPs. That is still better than any other USA man except Ilia, of course. Tomoki is close, but I think he's 4th and 9th. I'm hoping for a great Nats and an even better Olympics! And clean programs! I know that he can do it!

His scores weren't that bad, he's still US #2nd and I doubt it will change. Jason (and majority of skaters) peak in the second half of the season. All men, except Ilia, where kind of a mess this GP. The US federation people know he is the reliable one, especially around Olympics/Worlds. I think Jason needs to do his routine he did last Olympics season when they were very focused on his mental strength, with the headphones and the sounds he would listen to and all of that, I think his team neglected that because he was so strong last seasons when he skated mostly in the second half and he was very clean with high scores.
