Happy Thanksgiving! Hope everyone had a great day filled with lots of love, family, & thankfulness :)

Cute stuffed turkey. And I still like the glasses.

Also, as if Jason needed justification to eat all that delicious food, he ran a race in Highland Park!

The cold won't stop us this brisk #Thanksgiving morning!! #timetorun #TurkeyTrot #5k

Turkey Trot are races that occur on or around Thanksgiving. Supposed to encourage people to be healthy before they eat all that food.

Because I run (or jog, I'm slow!) myself and I was super curious, I looked up the race results (North Shore Turkey Trot).
http://ramracing.enmotive.com/results/index/529b65b4-975c-40bc-a277-1fbdc0a86524

Jason finished the 5k (3.1 miles) in 20:45. That's a 6:41 mile (4:09/km). He finished 75th out of 2,224 runners. Well done.

Jason's dad (Steve) did well too! 29:52, which is a 9:36 mile. Pretty good stuff!

Yep, loving the glasses even more. If you look at the two pics that Mrs P posted you can compare them nicely

Ah the saga of the men. Jason missed being in the GPF by 0.15 of a point (i.e. the margin Hanyu got 4th and the last spot)! CRAZY. Sad thing is had he been at this competition, he would have finished on the podium with his score at Rostelecom. Fate, sometimes.

Well Jason's first alternate!

So near and yet so far. It's a tough break, but I'm sure he will have a positive attitude about it.

We haven't yet seen him at his best this season. I hope he uses the down time to really become more comfortable with the new programs and the increased expectations. It will be interesting to see if he attempts a quad at all this season.

Well Jason's first alternate!
Cup of Russia remains the strongest men event. Maybe Moscow rink has magic or something...
Who needs reality show, men event this year has much more drama, and event blood. :hijacked:

Good luck to Jason!!

While I was working on my report on the men, I stumbled on this awesome HD version of Jason's FS from Rostelecom Cup. It's from Japanese television and I think it's Nobunari Oda who is commentating. I'm hoping someone can help translate some of the comments from him cause I'd like to know what one of Jason's favorite skaters thinks. :)

If anyone else has corrections to my translation, please do pitch in. This is just a quick running translation.

Jason Brown wants to make a comeback from 7th in the short program.
The distance from the top is very small. –it is very possible to improve his standings.
….. FS Starts
Nobu: Triple axel triple toe combination jump. Having the arm up gives extra GOE points.
A double axel from a counter. This is a difficult entrance that will also gain him points.
Change foot camel spin. The position is very good.
Other Commentator: Since Jason is not including a quad in his program, the execution of his spins, steps and jumps become very important.
Nobu: A jump from a ina bauer –tripple lutz…step-out and hand down.
Flying combination spin.
…..
Nobu: Step sequence. Wonderful use of upper body and knees. Edgework, wonderful.
Triple axel, double foot landing.
Triple flip, triple toe loop. Easily done combination.
The music begins to build in strength.
Triple lutz, triple salchow.
Double axel.
Combination spin.
FS ENDS
Other Commentor: After the performance, his emotions begin to well up.
Nobu: one of his strengths is the transitions between his elements. I think it’s a wonderful performance in which he leaves no note unused.
He stepped out of his triple lutz single loop triple salchow, But he recovered at the end with his triple lutz combination. This is good points-wise.
He was able to finish his performance without big misses.
Other: It’s really all about Jason Brown’s Preformance ability isn’t it?
Nobu: Yes it is. From the beginning, he doesn’t let the music go. He grabs the music with his movements and that’s a difficult thing to do. He’s a competitor who has a great talent in this area.
Other: he shows a great manly presence in this program, but it’s not only that. It’s also softness and flexibility. This triple axel and double toe loop, was properly rotated. So he will get good GOE’s on this.
Nobu: A wonderful jump.
This double axel from a counter will also get good points for jumping directly from a transition.
OTHER: There were a lot of jumps that will get positive GOE’s
Nobu: this jump he stepped out. And this triple axel…double footed so he will lose points on execution.
Other: here at the end he’s almost crying at the final spin.
Nobu: He will be graded highly on his Choreography, transitions, interpretation…Performance.
Other: Now, Jason shows a smile. Second at Skate America, and here in Russia 7th in the short.
Here’s the scores for the FS. 159.24. This is a new personal best. He is currently at the top.

Nobu

Thank you SO much for the transcript/translation Newbiespectator!!!

You have no idea how often I've wished for a transcript like that

I can understand many languages, from Norwegian to Spanish to German, but always when I watch a video with Japanese commentary I have not the slightest idea of what they're saying and I always wonder...for some reason, I always imagined that their commentary would be somehow different; I don't know how or why but in my head it was always more gracious and observant and full of poetic expressions - but it seems to be exactly the same  Although much better in that there's no superfluous chat! And Nobunari sounds soooo cute

ETA: Although "a great manly presence" is pretty poetic!

ETA2: One thing I've always wondered about though: I notice that Japanese commentators use the English terms for many elements; "Step Sequence" and "Combination spin" (for instance). Have these terms been adopted directly, as in there are no equivalent Japanese words?

I do that myself all the time, because even though the terms exist in Finnish I always remember the English ones first. So when I explain stuff to my husband it sounds like this: "Blablaba bla bla step sequence bla bla bla flying spin blabla". Although to my husband I suppose it really just sounds like "bla bla bla" all the way :laugh2:

You are very welcome. I always appreciate when people translate other language commentary for my faves.
I'm pretty sure that a proper translator would make them sound as good as they do in 'real life'. I just did a direct translation in which some nuances are lost. Nobu has just begun commenting this year, but he does a really good job with explaining where points are gained and lost. Japanese are usually pretty positive about everyone and while of course, they cheer for the Japanese skaters most, they almost never say anything negative about anyone.

I like that!

About terminology, mostly it is the English terms made into Japanese pronunciations. There are no equivalents in Japanese. Things like GOE are translated into Japanese words though.
Hearing 'flying sit spin' in Japanese pronunciation is awful every time due to the 'sss' sound in sit always changing into a 'sh' sound. therefore 'sit' becomes 'sh..'. :hopelessness:

LOL I never heard that but now I will be paying special attention for sure :laugh2:

I made a little fan video of Jason over the course of the last few nights. I really hope some of you enjoy it :) It was a struggle to find music because he is so sincere and genuine in his performance that it's nearly impossible to just insert a new song and chop up his skates and have it make sense but I hope I caught some of the moments that his most faithful fans enjoy. I promise you this......I have learned a lot about Jason's skating and it was hard leaving certain things out that I thought were very impressive. Very hard to edit out some of his jumps and not add more footwork :)

Thanks to those who answered my PM's about Jason. It helped me tremendously:)

I'm new to the whole video editing thing so feel free to give me any tips or pointers. (maybe best thru PM so I don't :hijacked: the thread)
