Jason Brown

My two-cents caveat regarding the Challenger discussion:

Seems possible -- and reasonable -- to me that Jason would not necessarily have carte blanche to simply claim whichever Challenger assignment(s) he wants.

For example, we do not know whether Max had been hoping to defend his title at Skate America.
If he had, perhaps USFS at least would give greater weight to Max's Challenger preferences than to Adam's and Jason's. Would seem only fair, IMO.

And aside from Max, what if Adam and Jason both want a certain Challenger? I'm not saying that Adam automatically should get it -- or that Jason automatically should get it. They both will be prepping for Skate America, and they both will be aiming for the podium there. USFS might have some tough choices to make when deciding on Challenger assignments.

But why can't both Adam and Jason go to the same Challenger, and Max too, to that matter? I know that at GP events the limit is three skaters per country, but I don't know the Challenger limit, if there is one. If USFSA doesn't mind sending Jason and Adam, and Gracie and Ashley, and Chock/Bates and Shibutani in the past to SA, I don't think it'll see a problem with sending two or three American competitors to the same B competition, which matters even less in the grand scheme of things. Also considering the number of prominent US men (also Miner, Hochstein, Chen), USFSA might find it impossible not to send them to the same B competitions, if they want to do more than one.

So, any speculation about which Sr Bs Jason will choose?

I'm guessing Nebelhorn for old times' sake, and Nepela because he seemed to be super popular there last year. How close are those two? Could he maybe stay in Europe if his Bs were only a week apart?

Hmm. I'm actually wondering if he will only try for one in late-ish September before SA and then do another closer to NHK (eg, Ukraine). Here's my logic:

After training all of July with Frank, he goes directly to GF (July 28-31); after that he'll have only a few days of training time (if that) before leaving for Japan (his shows are August 5-11). When he returns, he'll only have a week to 10 days before Champs Camp in Colorado Springs from August 20-24. Even if he does show both competitive programs in Japan, he's going to need time to get his stamina back up training at altitude. He will need time with Kori and probably Rohene. All of that suggests to me that Lombardia is way too early, and US Classic may be, too. Which of Nepela, Nebelhorn, or Autumn Classic he's assigned to will likely depend on the field and their goals for the Sr B (points, general competition readiness, solidify jumps and incorporate Frank's technique, etc.). Sadly for you, I think Finlandia may be a touch too late, but since I've been wrong about many things before, I may also be wrong about that!

Re Elijah: he is really a hoot! I gave him a scratch as you requested, and he turned around, looked me in the eye, and gave a loud meow of approval - so right back atcha! 🤗 No, that's not a casserole he's in, it's a cardboard box bottom from a case of cat food. He's way too big to fit in any casserole I have - not fat, but very tall, long, and big boned. And when he's in the mood, he talks non stop. He and his brothers luuuurve boxes, baskets and the like, so they've claimed many things around the house as beds, toys, and hiding places! They are all real characters!

@karne, much as I'd like to, I can't take full credit for the sexy Brazilian bartender thing - but like you, I will keep using it! Someone in some comment somewhere said he looked like a very sexy bartender at Copabanana in Philadelphia - I misread it as Copacabana (famous NYC night club in 50s) and El henry corrected me. I decided "Brazilian" was easier - and based on the Brazilian guys I've known, hopefully pretty spot on! ;)

To clarify what I meant:

It's not that it would be against a numbers rule for USFS to send Max and Jason (or Adam and Jason) to the same Challenger. Same for Max and Adam.

IMO, history suggests that it would be unlikely for USFS to send Max and Jason (or Adam and Jason) to the same Challenger. Same for Max and Adam.
YMMV.

First and foremost, sorry to hear that you have been unwell, TMC. Wishing you the best.

Thank you :)

I have no idea how they choose their competitions. I wonder if it's a system where they give their 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on preferences, and/or maybe even a list of least desirable competitions for them (very close to GP, other scheduling issue etc.). And then USFSA okays their choices, or doesn't. Who knows :scratch3:

I get the feeling that Adam really liked Finlandia during his first outing there in 2014, and that's why he came back a year later. He said something along those lines in an interview during the competition last season. I thought for sure he would come back this year, but I've all but given up hope of ever seeing any SA competitors at FT...

FWIW, below (in case anyone missed it) is a passage from a Castelli/Tran interview published last month (before GP assignments were announced).

I'm guessing that what they said about themselves is representative of all USFS disciplines, not just pairs.
C/T alluded to a form that they fill out to state their preferences. I assume that they mean a USFS form (as opposed to an ISU form).

For GPs other than Skate America, I guess USFS (if/when it is willing to work on turning skater preferences into reality?) could attempt to wangle certain invitations from certain host feds?
C/T requested NHK and GP France. They were assigned to GP France. (They were not guaranteed two.)

Castelli/Tran sound confident (I think?) that they will be assigned to Autumn Classic.
They want a second Challenger. For that one, the bottom line seems to be: "But we don’t really have much say in where we’re going." (They were third at 2016 Nats.)

The relevant excerpt from the (long and wide-ranging) interview:

Q: In regard to next season, you’ll hear soon about your Grand Prix assignments. Are you hoping for any particular GPs?

Marissa: Right now, we put in our request for NHK and [TEB] in Paris. But whatever happens, happens. We’ll just be thankful to get two. We would like to do Autumn Classic [Challenger Series event] in Montreal, because that way we don’t have to travel. Besides that, we’ll see what happens. We’re not at the top of the chain, so we can’t really choose what we’re doing, like Meagan and Eric can. But hopefully we’ll be tagging along with them [to some events] and that way, we can be travel buddies.

Mervin: That would be lots of fun.

Q: Are you hoping to do a second Challenger Series event, too, or just Autumn Classic?

Marissa: We’re hoping for a second one. We have to wait and see what [Grand Prix] internationals we’re going to get—to figure out if we should do a Challenger in between our Grand Prixs, or do one after, or do two before. We’re going to see once the schedule comes out–what is available for us and what’s possible.

Q: So you let the federation know your preferences, but then they make the final call?

Marissa: Yes. We have this thing we have to fill out, and we just put down our preferences of where we’d prefer to be sent. But we don’t really have much say in where we’re going. So we’ll see.

Oh yeah, I read that interview (it's really good!) but for some reason I remembered that they talked about GPs only. Interesting to see that a similar process applies to other competitions as well!

I'm just hoping some of my faves come to FT. If not, I'll probably go to Tallinn trophy as well this year. If I get better, I might just go no matter who is competing there :)

Crzesk8 Dad has posted the lineup for Glacier Falls ... Boy, if you follow American men, it pays to live in LA. Jason officially listed:yahoo: along with all of 7k (Jordan, Romain, Ben J., Mariah), Grant, Ross, Tim D., Vincent Zhou and of course Crzesk8dad's skater;) And an Australian skater too:)

Now someone take videos, please!

Ooh that lineup is just awesome!!!

That would be nice!!!...How are you doing today TMC? Hope you're having a good day.

I'm doing fine, thank you for asking! I've had five days of nearly normal existence now after 2.5 months of agony, so I'm trying to make the most of it :)

Oh my, that makes my problems seem small. I wish you all the best. Hang in there! :ghug: (group hug)

I read somewhere that we will get (free) video on IN after the fact!

Thanks, TMC. Based on IN's favorable track record with free Glacier Falls video on demand, my fingers had been crossed.

Your post is the first  I have heard about IN keeping up the good work this year .

By the Thursday after 2015 GF, IN had posted the SP and FS video of the entire fields of Senior Men, Senior Ladies, Junior Men, and Junior Ladies.
Two days earlier, IN had posted video of some individual programs of those with high placements -- the likes of Nathan, Vivian, Gracie, etc.
(2015 was even better than 2014, when IN posted only Seniors.)

According to a post in the GF thread on FSU by the wonderful and all-knowing Sylvia of Unseen Skaters, the club "will provide video of the junior and senior men's and ladies events to Ice Network, for viewing on demand, at no charge, once the competition is over."

https://unseenskaters.wordpress.com/

So, next best thing to a live stream.

Any bets on what damage will be done to Jason's costumes?

I'm hoping that now that we've had two seasons in a row where Kori and/or Jason have admitted openly they didn't like some of the Rohene costumes, Rohene might let Jason have a bit more freedom with them.

That's a really great picture of the four of them, and Gracie with little makeup really does look like Grace Kelly. I love Carly's work - read that she will be studying photo journalism and really hope she does something with it. Here's a link to the same montage on Twitter - if you click on the photo you can enlarge it a bit.

Still head shaking that there hasn't been a single "official" comment about this, to the point that people in the Instagram comments are still wondering about a coaching change, but oh well. I do think a brief tweet by Jason or someone like Lynn Rutherford for Ice Network would have been appropriate, but I guess I'm just a control freak! ;)
