Jason Brown

Someone is going to have to tell me about Jason's media call. I started listening and Phil was first, and I just couldn't deal with him and his quads questions at the moment, and decided I'd rather chop vegetables.

http://web.icenetwork.com/video/topic/220125674/v1245556883

You have no idea how that made me laugh: I'd rather chop vegetables than listen to Phil Hersh! Not as bad as nails on a blackboard, but....

:)

It was clear from the audio of the call that Jason has positive feelings about Phil.
Very friendly :ghug: exchange btwn them at the beginning of the Q & A session (my quotes are not quite 100% verbatim):

Michael Terry called on Phil ... and then in response to Phil's simple initial hello to Jason ...

Jason exclaimed with great enthusiasm: "Hi!!! I heard I will be seeing you in Finland!!!"

To which Phil gave a humorous self-deprecating reply: "You will ... you can't avoid me ... . I'm like the bad penny that won't go away."

Jason affectionately disagreeing: "No!!! Not at all -- I'm excited to see you!!"

[Of course, the multiple exclamation points are mine, but listening to the tone of Jason's voice, I think they are warranted.]

The conversation btwn them regarding Phil's questions also was completely positive. Just roughly paraphrasing and summarizing now:

The gist of Phil's first question was along the lines of -- is it more important for you to have quads or clean programs?

Which served up the perfect opportunity for Jason to stress that it's important for him to do what he does best -- "for me it's all about putting together a program that I can win the GOE with."

Both Phil and Jason used the word "quads" (plural), and one of Phil's follow-ups was to clarify what Jason meant by "quads": more than one in a program? one in each program if things are good? two different quads?

Jason chuckled as he replied, "I am not planning to do more than one in each."

As is often a problem for reporters on such teleconferences, Hersh could not hear Jason's answer clearly, and Hersh politely asked him to repeat it.

Jason -- again chuckling -- "No, I'm not planning to do more than one in each program."

Isn't it clear that Jason has positive feelings about just about everyone...?

:biggrin::agree:

Too bad that the same cannot be said about some of the GS members who adore Jason. :(

If you ask me, something that would make Jason/Tigger unhappy is the constant negativity and criticism against Hersh in this thread.

Phil had not even mentioned that he was going to be in Finland.

It was Jason's active choice to bring it up and to express excitement over seeing Phil.

I really find it hard to understand that some people think that a good way to show support on GS for Jason's good nature and positivity is to be derisive of others for whom Jason has no ill will.

I'm fairly new to this board and I'm not that familiar with the comments on Phil. My own comment above on Phil had to do with starting in right away with a quad question. This was bound to come up, but I was a little irked that this was the first question by the first journalist. If he had asked Jason if he was ready for Worlds, how his programs felt, or if his injury had healed, anything else..., and THEN moved on to asking about quads, that would have been different. As it was, it turned me off and I decided I could wait until later to listen and assumed someone would post a summary by the time I got dinner in the oven . So, thanks!

I'm at work so I just skimmed the article. It sounded like 4T is planned in both programs for Worlds but final decision depends on practice; was landing 4T and 4S before injury but no mention of current status 4S; 4F for future - doesn't sound like he's started working on it yet.

Finally managed to settle down enough to read through it, and yes, I see. Well leaving the final decision to practice is a good though as I said he may not actually have the choice but to risk it in the FS, depending on how things go, for him and others.
I do wonder if his Sal is simply wonky so he might want to try the 4F instead during the summer.

I've been talking to a friend about Jason and was wondering, do we know if he plans to continue post 2018? The new rules, with the +5 GOE and one less jumping pass, may favor Jason more so if he's able to have two stable quads (because I do agree with his assertion that there's no point, unless they are at least stable-ish (look at Kolyada)) then the new system would be good for him. He'd be satisfying both the technical side and displaying the rest in its glory.

Couple of points:

(1) These teleconferences always start with the moderator asking the skater to make some opening remarks.

The questions from reporters do not start until after the skater's opening remarks.

Jason's opening remarks:
Feeling really great heading into the World Championships.
It has been quite a journey from my injury in December to now and I'm feeling much, much stronger and more confident than ever.

... [audio was garbled, I couldn't hear a sentence?] ...
I'm really, really excited.

So before any question from any journalist (Hersh or otherwise), Jason already had a chance to say (and did say) that he was feeling great -- stronger and more confident than ever.

Those thoughts from Jason were in one of yesterday's other tweets:

@fsonline
On media call with @jasonbskates: He says he's feeling great heading into #Helinski2017 & is feeling much stronger since Dec. injury.
1:42 PM - 22 Mar 2017

(2) The moderator decides the order in which journalists are called upon to ask questions.

It's not as if Hersh was able to ask Jason the first question b/c Hersh (metaphorically) shoved other reporters aside to be first.

I'm fairly new to this board and I'm not that familiar with the comments on Phil. ...

If you or anyone else chooses not to listen to audio of Phil or chooses not to read what Phil writes, of course that is your choice to make.

Because you are new-ish, I will be careful to say that the following comments do not refer to you:

What I have a problem with is that some Jason fans repeatedly snark about Phil -- in this thread and in other threads.

Their recurring snark is quite a contrast to Jason's consistent sweetness.

I will add that Lynn Rutherford was the second journalist called on by Michael in Jason's teleconference yesterday.
And guess what? Lynn's first and second questions to Jason also were about quads.

She first asked whether he would have a quad toe in both programs at Worlds.
Jason (as is his prerogative) did not answer the question directly.
"The main goal is to do what I can do and to do it in the most competent manner ..." [ETA: Or maybe he said "most confident" manner?? The audio was hard for me to hear.]
As her second question, she followed up by asking sort of rhetorically whether he would see how practices go in Helsinki ...
Jason's brief and cheerful reply: "For sure."

My point is that even if Michael had called on Lynn (for example) first instead of Phil, you still would have had to either "deal" with her questions about quads or chop vegetables instead.

(Side note: I have met Lynn Rutherford in person and she is a very pleasant human being. And I feel sure that Jason has positive feelings about her.
But FWIW, on yesterday's media call, Jason for whatever reason did not give her a big "Hi!!!" like the one that he gave to Phil.)

If you are not crazy about questions from any reporter about quads, I can understand that.

But what has happened in the past is that when Phil asks a question about quads or writes about quads, he becomes the target in this thread of another round of demonization.

Whereas when other reporters (who -- just like Phil -- have a history of asking Jason questions about quads and of writing about quads) ask more questions about quads or write again about quads, no one in this thread posts one word of complaint.

Leads me to believe (although it is just my opinion) that some Jason fans "love to hate" Phil, whether Phil deserves it or not. YMMV.

Okay, haven't had time to listen, but if it was the first question from Phil, I would should have taken book on the quad question. And I would rather pill my cat .... well, you get the idea.

(For those of you not on FSU, it is worth your while to find the "Ivana Komova" interviews. The one with PH "I hate Figure Skaters" is priceless. The one with Frank Carroll "I tried to find the best phrenologist in LA County" for Gracie is also a hoot.)

I loved the Bev Smith article, saying so articulately what so many of us feel. It makes me wish that my "interregnum" had been a little shorter so that I could appreciate Patrick more.

11.5 million total views on Facebook. :dance3:am just amazed that the comment section is still going strong two weeks after the posting. I'm on Fbook more than even GS (hard to believe;)) and that is soooo unusual.

And as those Fbook posters would undoubtedly say: Go Jason! Slay at Worlds!:clapper:

For those who do not visit FSU regularly: I will point out that these so-called "interviews" are fictional parodies.

"I hate figure skaters" is nothing more than a fictional quote that the author of the parody has invented as something for the author's fictional Hersh character to say.

Please do not mistake these fictional words for actual words that have come out of real-life Phil's mouth.

For those who visit FSU regularly, I am stating the obvious.

For those who do not visit FSU regularly, what I am saying might not be so obvious -- especially if they are just glancing at el henry's post without going to FSU to read the fictional parodies.

(Yes, I have used the word "fictional" five times in this post .)

p.s. I happen to disagree with el henry that any of the FSU parodies are worth anyone's while. For me, the bits that I have read have been a waste of my time.

In an interview from 2014 he said he hoped to skate in two more Olympics (2018 & 2022). It's possible he's changed his mind since but I don't think he's said anything about stopping after 2018.

As far as his future, I am listening as I type and Jason answered Dave Lease in the pre-Worlds interview about how he long he would skate: "I can't imagine skating for more than five years" but also "I can't imagine that next year is my last program".

and even answers the "It's a competition/it's a sport" comments.
"I love the sport because of the performance and because of the way I can touch people's hearts.
I know it's a competition, but I want to draw people in. I don't want to lose that."
I need to remember those quotes:biggrin:

Also not committing to Hamilton next year. Wants a program with wide appeal. Hmmmm.......May need to rethink that one. ETA: I may need to rethink my belief that Hamilton is an SP.

Regarding the huge number of views of Jason's Riverdance thru St. Patrick's Day holiday, I got a very excited email from a very dear friend and former work colleague who knows NOTHING about FS, is not a fan, but sent me Jason's Riverdance from Celtic Thunder, saying he was "awesome" !!! And did I know him?! :drama:. :palmf:
Guess things come full circle....
My response was:. Yes, Leslie, I do know Jason... Thanks for sharing...
