Jason Brown | Page 179 | Golden Skate

Jason Brown

Based on the comments made on the NBC broadcast, only reinforces my main criticism of Tara and Johnny.

Again, why do they bother with comments that have NO bearing on the result or the skater's score? What does saying that Adam's skating is beautiful and that "25 is too late" have anything to do with how he skated or placed? Or that "Jason's choreography is elegant and very Jason (whatever the heck that means)" has to do with his result?

As many others note, they do provide interesting information that IS relevant (like URs and such), but everything else is just one's opinion and doesn't really explain the sport to the viewers?

T&J seem more excited about enhancing their public image/lifestyle than really educating viewers on the sport.

As for math--come on---other sports have TONS of math. I remember at the end of some NCAA game, they said some think like "Okay there's 30 seconds left, for X team to have a chance to win, they have to score X goal and get another possession."

College basketball commentators talk about style there too, but it's usually in the context of how they will score or how they will do against their opponent.

My husband, who watches FS extremely sporadically, knew that 4th place was a great result for Jason "especially without a quad", as he noted. If my husband could grasp it, I don't think it would be that difficult to explain, to be honest.

Though I know StitchMonkey is only trying to make sense... of the nonsensical. Which is difficult.:)

What can i say I am masochistic. When i see things that don't make sense I see a riddle that needs to be solved.

This is also why i drink. . . so i can give up on the riddles and just be happy instead.

Ohh I am not saying it is a good idea. Just that might be the mental thought process that led to this result. Maybe somebody on high got it in their head figure skating viewers don't like numbers and ran with it way too much. It just felt a bit like they were trying to avoid numbers, because like you said in your post, using them would have made everything make sense much simpler. I usually assume there is a reason people don't take the easy path, even if it is a stupid reason.

I think Jason knows better what is going on than we all think - and knows that not everyone will always love him. I actually think that would be a great idea. It would show that most nations love him, too bad his own is the least enthusiastic.

Showing everyone is balanced and fair. . . too bad if Johnny and Tara look like asshats - that is their fault.

Hmmm I'm reconsidering now....the only problem is that I'd have to watch it again while editing, probably several times. The thought alone gives me rage :D

Keep liquor handy. And just laugh at them.

Is there a possibility that Jason might do Skate America?

I think there is a pretty strong probability he will get Skate America. He is National champ and he is the highest placed medalist still competing from last year.

I really think it would be nice to give someone feedback about these broadcasts and Johnny & Tara, whether to NBC Sports or USFS. I know a lot of people hated Scott and Sandra as commentators, but I don't recall them ever being blatantly unfair and unbalanced, and J&T seem to be moving dangerously in that direction. I do really appreciate the technical info they give us, but otherwise their commentary is a little too mean girls: they might as well be snarking on a forum. What I really am afraid of is that their opinions may eventually shape the way judges and federations view individual skaters and that they might try to deliberately wield power in that way.

Then probably I'll buy tickets for Skate America...when I find out where and who.

I was already going to get a sneaky afternoon buzz going when WTT is on, so if it's uploaded by then I just might! :D

Seriously though just the thought of showing the (absolutely ridiculous) contrast between the comments gives me some comfort. "Fantastico!" -> "Brillante!" -> "How good was that!?" -> "You can see from his face that he knows he didn't do well...technically it just wasn't there tonight..."

I think that is a good plan! Maybe we should all get some Saki in Japan's honor.

I think the contrast would be amusing, but also help illustrate how different people can interpret things.

The where and who is the ultimate question isn't it? Hopefully we will find out soon after WTT.

I'm just hoping they announce everything soon, I want to see who is going to the Colorado Springs JGP and then decide if it is worth it. If Tyler Pierce is there, I likely will feel like I have to go and I would not be surprised if the local girl gets the invite.

Oh definitely. Because once I find out who's skating there, I'll decide if it'll be worth it or not to go.

And of course the where is a factor because it'll determine if we can drive there or have to take a plane.

And in some cases rent a car as well depending on where it is located from the airport.

When my dad was booking stuff when I went to Chicago for Skate America, he picked out a hotel a mile away from the Sears Center. Plus we took a taxis/shuttles cause I basically stayed at the hotel doing a cheat sheet for sociology and studied for chemistry. No sightseeing. Studying came first.

Which is nice when you can do that. Some locations are just not as friendly. For instance I have family that skipped the Superbowl one year specifically due to location issues between the stadium/airport/hotels. It just was too much of a pain to bother with that year. . . so naturally the local team won (for the first time ever) that year. Not all venues have hotels that are convenient or both convenient and affordable.

And my my cynicism is showing again. Need to go watch Eurosport Jason to reset.

Spanish Jason is my happy place :D

I too am torn between curiosity making me want to hear what they actually said - and wariness that hearing it may... annoy me. (possibly understatement) I suppose if the vid isn't even available, the decision is taken from me...

Unfortunately, I don't speak Spanish. But that reminds me to go watch Javi's goat imitation.

You can do both!

Jason Brown FS (NBC's Road to the Podium) - 2015 Worlds

Sorry for the janky editing... I have to entertain myself somehow...

NOOOOO sabinfire. ignorance is bliss!

Just kidding. Thank you. I might or might not watch it. Actually I might watch it to honor your hard work. That's it.

Then I will wash it all away with your lovely Liza 3A jumpatron! :)

I'm so glad I took advantage of one of the icenetwork special discounts and am able to watch Jason's performance without commentary. When I want commentary, the British Eurosport guys are my favorites (love their accents, positivity and enthusiasm). Thanks to my high school Spanish, I can pick out some words in the Spanish commentary. I enjoy how excited they get during his performance.

I'm hoping for an even better antidote...two clean skates at WTT! :D Thrilled to see these programs one last time...yes, even Juke. :)

And, if you are really lucky, you'll be able to see Cotton Eye Joe again.
