SAMEEE. Like in the Ondrej Nepela thread, I had to restrain myself from snapping at people dissing his program. Made me so ticked off. It's still early in the season. Some people peak later.....I respect Chen as well. Jason is perfectly capable of competing with the big boys. We all know that.

I get what you're saying, but juniors, in general, tend to earn much lower PCS. It's hard to say how Nathan would have scored if he was in the same competition as Jason.

Also Nathan's scoring ceiling was limited by the fact he couldn't do a quad in the SP.

In general, I don't think it's worth getting worked up over people's opinions. They are entitled to them, just as you are. :)

This happens every year. Jason has a so-so competition, gets beat by somebody random, people declare gloom-and-doom for his career, then he pulls a rabbit and surprises everyone. Wash, rinse, repeat. :)

Why do we have to bring down another skater in order to say how another one is great? So when Chen is doing good, it's irrelevant because Jason is better skater overrall? No. Had Chen decided to compete in Seniors, he would definietly have a chance to get on the World team. However, that doesn't mean he would be immidiately the Nats champion or Jason wouldn't be on the team! And Nathan still needs reputation and polishment, hence the lower PCS. It is unfair to bash other skater's fans just because they belive in their favorite. Btw, Chen, Farris, Rippon, basically his rivals are just the reasons to improve, so there is nothing bad about stacked fields. It only gives power to become a better skater.

So watching the program again, there's definitely some cool stuff to appreciate.

For me, it's the entrance into what is currently the 3Z pass. Perhaps it will be the transition for the 3F-3T pass later on. It spans nearly the whole rink! Very cool.

One qualm -- the second jumping pass -- whether it's the 3A or 3F-3T is so badly time---he launches at it 1:07, which is 19 seconds before the halfway mark.

Also there's so much quickstep choreo throughout that I actually had to watch carefully to figure out where the footwork sequence was. Whew!

So that brings me to one question, bought up by Newbie in the main event thread -- is it really smart to ask Jason to do a choreographically-demanding SP and master/integrate the quad into his programs? My response was I believe there was some long-term gain in doing it this way, but I think it's a valid question. It does seem to be a lot to master, even if you have a whole season to do so.

In other news, an FSU poster who is at Nepela reports that Jason has been practicing the quad; it's not consistent yet but s/he speculates we'll see it tomorrow. I'm so looking forward to the FS, with or without quad !
 
They said "when he really goes for it he has the right rotation" so I guess that would mean he's landed a few that are clean. They said most were still << though.

I do think he has great competitive fight, so he's the sort of skater who could suddenly land one in competition despite them not being consistent. That's just my opinion.

Factually, he's not doing many but he is working on them.

Ha ha - I was the one asking about the jumps (I post on FSU as Tavi) and I must confess that I started to wonder how many good quads, if any, he actually did. ;)

If he didn't make a lot of attempts total, and most were popped, and most of the others were < at best, maybe .... one good one?!

But insideedgeua is right in saying he's a great competitor, so let's see what he does tomorrow.
 
Nice program. Very good fight on the quads, though of course his triple axels need more work (though I'm sure they'll be fine comes the Grand Prix season). Got to say I'm not really a fan of that costume; he needs a more classical and tailored costume to fit the music, not that asymmetrical collar. Also, the music doesn't really have a lot of highs and lows, though I'm not sure if he could change it now.
 
He did a great job! I'm glad he went for the 4T, although with -GOE and << he lost about 8 points on that element alone. Still, I see a big improvement in the program as a whole, and am looking forward to seeing it at Skate America.

I miss the color of the sash but I do think the new costume is more flattering. Very Max-like, except for the sequins, eh @karne? :)

ETA gosh I just looked at the protocols. If he could just improve the quad to < and get to 0 GOE on the axels and combo, his tech score would go up like 8 points and he would be around 170 total. That's leaving negative GOE on the 4T. Not bad, especially considering his PCS was not super inflated. He'll have to do better than that (and better in SP) to compete with Hanyu et al, but it's encouraging.

I love that he seems to win people over wherever he goes.

I'm finding myself having to take deep breaths in the Onderj Nepela thread. Because seriously, stop program-bashing Jason's FP! I like it a lot.
