But didn't Johnny retire b/c of struggles with injuries? Wasn't an issue of quad or no quad, IMO.

He skated at 2012 Finlandia after taking time off. He tried a 4T in both events, but one was downgraded and one was UR. He then WD from the GP. I think all skaters have some injuries, but it does appear he was at least wanting to attempt a quad, and then well... that did not turn out well for him. Really I am sure there are many reasons he retired as I am sure there are many reasons for most retirements. I do wonder how much the quad was a factor though.

Your paraphrasing is unfair to Johnny, IMO.
I don't have an accurate quote at my fingertips either, but at the time, Johnny's words came across to me quite differently.
To me, his criticism was against USFS and its policy of allowing petitioning.
To me, Johnny was not criticizing skaters who choose to submit a petition -- as USFS allows. His tone was not at all along the lines of, "Anyone who is injured needs to just suck it up and compete at Nats."

ETA:
Lest anyone wonder, my feelings overall about Johnny's commentary are mixed. I have been accused (unfairly) at least once in other thread(s?) for being a Johnny-hater -- b/c of my negative reaction to some other particular thing that he said.
In the case of Johnny's comment about petitioning, I think he has gotten a bad rap.

Agreed. Was that the same article where he said basically even if you're injured you should compete at Nats if you want to go to worlds?!

I am a bit with Ice Coverage on this one. I did not take his comments to be a dig at Jason, but rather a disagreement about how byes are handled. Which he is free to have an opinion on, and even think it might be one of the safer stances to take. If he does not like the bye system in general, he is free to feel that way. And if he does not like byes, i would not expect him to support Jason's bye.

I took his comments as more "if an ongoing injury means you can't go to Nationals, maybe you should resign yourself to missing worlds and accept your injury" which might have some merits. Honestly, I think USFSA should rethink how they pick world teams in many ways. At least rethink picking the same day as the competition, when everyone is running on a mixture of adrenaline, emotion and liquor and not really thinking normally. I think the committee should be given at least one nights sleep first. Really I do wish a little that 4CCs was used as more of a deciding factor.\

Honestly I am torn on byes. I mean i agree with it in Nancy Kerrigan's case for certain, but for ongoing injuries maybe the focus should be more on healing. Maybe more of as system of applying for byes for issues that happened within a week of Nationals. That would cover Nancy's case and any odd random cases of food poisoning or a randomly needed appendectomy, but still cut down on byes and send more of a message to try to be there.

Here's a video of Jason's SP practice from yesterday:

Thank you for these! Messy hair (Oooh Jason how could you!) but the program looks smooth - aside from a few near collisions - yikes! I can't pretend to say whether the quad is rotated or not, but it did flow very smoothly from the preceding footwork - hope he had success with it tonight!

ETA Stitch and Ice Coverage, you're both entitled to opinions and so is Johnny. But so am I. Let's just agree to disagree because honestly, it doesn't really matter much what I think about him, and I'd much rather be excited anticipating the competition tonight.

I tried to get a screen shot of when his blades hit the ice

I tried more than once and this was actually the least favorable moment i managed to pause it on the landing. While not backwards... it is clearly past the UR mark... assuming my pause video skills not total *****.

If that is how you want to handle it, I will respect that, but for what it is worth, i am not sure i thought it rose to the level of needed to agree to disagree... i did not feel like it was a disagreement, just different viewpoints.

At any rate, have a virtual hug if you felt ganged up upon, it was not my intent. :ghug:

Definitely around!! :yahoo:

Isn't it funny how we're not even focusing on the 3A anymore?!

The run through looked pretty good overall! Looks like he doubled the second jump on the combo but maybe he had to since someone else was right there. That mid program falling leaf (? - the split jump) had huge height. Wow.

Haha that's very true!! His Axel is so consistent these days.

Well, I wanted to hear the crowd reaction so I left the sound on, and I don't hate Sam Smith nearly as much anymore. Have aliens taken over my brain? and I can't count revolutions, but if y'all say it is do, then:yahoo:

And I do so appreciate the Nick Zaccardi stories on Jason, actually bringing out information on the back injury and the training, instead of look at me, I can snark.

Fingers crossed!:hap85:

Grack, exactly the scenario I was hoping to avoid, all four split across three groups. Hmm. Might have to get a bit creative with this lunch break.

That does dust off some cobwebs... i remember the trying to go viral comment but not the context.

Johnny is just so bloody weird when it comes to Jason. I encourage everyone to watched this clip of him doing commentary for Jason from 2012 nationals.

He is so complimentary to Jason... what happened?

I kinda wonder if part of it is that he (Johnny) is bitter about not trying to make it to the Olympics without a quad like Jason did. There was a lot of gossip that USFSA was really pushing for quads for the Olympics. Johnny tried some quads early and quickly retired as he just was not having luck. Then Jason comes along and makes it to the Olympics sans quad. I wonder if Johnny bought the USFSA's line that they were not going to send sans quad men to the Olympics, and thus stopped trying on that reason. To then see someone make it without a quad... could lead to Johnny kicking himself about listening to USFSA.

And he does give credit where credit is due often. He was very respectful about Jason trying the quad at 4CC, and spoke very highly of Jason's movements at Skate America last year. So he does see the positives... it just seems that he has some of his own ember issues burning that Jason seems to stoke the fires of.

IMO Johnny's problem with Jason is in a similar vein to the one he has with Max and boils down simply to: they're better than he was and if he had to skate against them, he'd lose. I think his issue with Jason is probably more that Jason is the artist Johnny always wished he was. Jason is now the skater doing avant garde stuff that's a bit non-traditional but he's doing it well, and Weir is jealous.

I don't think it's the non-quad issue - IIRC Weir made the Vancouver team without one, and Lysacek certainly did.

As for Weir's "comeback" in 2012...that ended for one reason and one reason only: he was going to get his backside handed to him at Nationals and he knew it.

Ermmm and what did your analysis tell you? :)

Well I think it looks really good. I watched it in slow motion and could not pause it at a moment that looked like his blade was on the ice before the 1/4 mark. I really do think that was clearly past the point of UR. He could have more flow on the exit, but we have seen messier ones still get positive GOE.

I also sent it to my better half.... He made a comment earlier today about how it is great that Jason is making progress but "Javi and Hanyu make it look so easy it will be hard for him to beat them at worlds"... sigh... well yes, but even the bronze would make me happy. I think this one actually looked pretty easy for a quad, so I wanted to get the opinion of someone who barely knows what to look for and barely cares - but can at least appreciate Javi and Hanyu. So i made he watch this... his comment was "Looks pretty good, although he telegraphs the setup from halfway across the rink.".... :hslap:I think i may have created a monster.

Priceless! Well the ice is clean so I guess I'll mosey over to the PBP thread....

Ugh, I ended up falling asleep about 10 minutes before Jason skated (it was 3 am here)! How did he do? Should I watch?

^Don't worry TMC, I was stuck at work

Do watch. It's magnificent and the quad is getting closer and I'm even inching a bit closer to liking the program.

Jason has the Midas touch of making even music one doesn't particularly like palatable! I already liked the SP 300% more when I watched the practice video.

Somebody on FSU said that Jason has been nailing the quad in practices this week!! :gclap:

Yes she actually posted in the comp thread here (nothing of substance), and she's the same person whose practice vids are linked in this thread and the FSU fan fest. I am very grateful for her practice run through clip, not only because we got to see the program with a clean quad, but because there were no interruptions due to the poor feed. This year is the first time I've had such major technical issues with Ice Network but im really getting annoyed!

I really like Jason's comments in the icenetwork article about the learning process - that his next step is to translate what he did in the 6/minute warmup to the comp. I do hope he can do it soon. Between the quad and the level 3 spin he lost 8 points. That's a lot!

Wow so he'd have been way over 90 with a clean quad and full levels? Sweet!
