Jason Brown

Glad you liked it, Tavi!

I always try to find as many different commentaries I can, because I enjoy hearing different viewpoints on what he does well. So far I've seen the Universal, Canada, and ESP versions of the SP and the NBC & CBC & ESP versions of the FS. Looking forward to seeing the Icenetwork vids, and I really hope somebody uploads the Universal FS as I'd love to hear Ryan Bradley's thoughts on the FS. His reaction at the hydroblade russian split was cute!

Now about to watch the highlights on Finnish ESP!

I’ve translated Nobu Oda’s commentaries for Jason from TV Asahi if anyone's interested. I couldn’t find videos of them but he basically just named the elements during the program and started talking after Jason finished. He sounded really excited when Jason landed the 4T though!

After the SP:
He went for the 4T. He hadn’t included it in the SP before but it’s good that he’s feeling strong about it. Also, after he fell on it, he nailed the 3A and 3Lz3T so he’ll still get a high score.
One thing I noticed is that during the change foot in the camel spin, he missed a position where he had to rotate 6 times but he didn't so I don’t know how he’ll be evaluated for that.
The stsq in the 2nd half was wonderful with good speed, he not only moves big, but moves in sync with the music so he should get big points for that.

After the FS:
I think it’s the first time Jason’s 4T was executed this beautifully. It’s amazing that he could perform this well as the last skater.
He has lots of transitions in between elements and each element was done so neatly and beautifully.
(The announcer says that Nobu was watching Jason intensely during the morning practice)
Personally, I think he is the best in the world in regards to transitions between elements.
(Watching the slow motion of the 4T) Mmmmm. it’s a little under rotated. I thought he nailed it beautifully but it might have been a little short. It was a wonderful performance nonetheless. He did the 3A so calmly.
He adds a lot of transitions like the spiral, jumping from a rocker, there’s a lot of creativity in his program and that’s his strength. And his spins, each position is of high quality and really fast.

Mikaboo, thank you so much for the translation - Japan is lucky to have such a knowledgeable commentator!

ETA it's so nice to hear both Nobu and Kurt Browning confirm that he has speed and power in his step sequences. That was my feeling watching in the arena, and its nice to know that people who really know a lot about it agree.

Aw, it's so cool to hear such comments from Nobu, who Jason admires greatly. And it sounds like Nobu was in Hoffman Estates commenting this? Did anyone see him? I love that guy and wish he was still skating!

ETA: Yes! (Should have read the Nobu fan fest before I asked, lol)

I am not 100% sure, but I think I may have seen him at one of the men's practices. I noticed a guy in a grey knit hair who look d really familiar to me; I googled pictures of Nobu just now, and they look a lot like the guy I saw.

Icenetwork article

My favourite part:

"It was kind of one of those dazed moments," Brown said. "I was so focused. I said, 'I'm going to attack it,' and suddenly I'm on one foot and I didn't have to fight for the landing. I thought, 'Oh my God, this is happening,' and then I thought, 'Wait! You're competing right now.'"

That made me laugh so hard, it's just exactly like I imagined it must have been

Also made me cry a little bit, too

I was so shocked - it looked so effortless! I was like... "wait a minute... was that a quad?!" - and had to go back (I was watching on Youtube) and watch it again... A little sad that it was deemed <, but next time... !

Anyway, I just showed my husband Jason's SP (I'd taped this from the telly, & we were watching as we were having a little snack), and he was... so, so impressed. "He doesn't even look like Jason Brown!" he kept exclaiming - and he's always been fond of Jason and has always enjoyed watching Jason skate. But he feels as if there is something more now to Jason's skating, his speed, and added "sharpness" (as my husband put it) to his movements. Basically, he feels that Jason has gone from very good to... "amazing".:) (His word.:))

Yes! What did the Swedish commentators have to say about him?

I wasn't paying much attention to her, to be honest - especially since this time my husband was continuously exclaiming enthusiastically (and the only reason I interrupted him was to put in some enthusiastic exclaiming and agreement of my own:)) So basically I will have to watch it again... (sighs loudly)... what a sacrifice - well, only for you TMC.;) (looks faux saintly).

Well, before the program she says that he is also (I forget who else she was referring to here) an elegant skater and a master of interpreting the music and then she went on to mention that he's had difficulties with the harder jumps such as 3A and quads. but that he is closing in on them and has succeeded several times at least. (No specifics on what she meant he had succeeded with.)

During the performance she mostly confined herself to the elements - "look a little extra at his spins".

After the skate: "Yes, he is so well liked, is Jason Brown. And he is so skilled at interpreting the music. Clearly the best stepsequence so far in the competition. You don't get the feeling that he only repeats the seven prescribed elements - he actually skates a program. It's difficult to take one's eyes off him when he is out there on the ice. He creates the interest that one wants a really good skater to do. One wishes to be drawn towards the skater's expression, simply."

During the replay mostly about the elements again. "These are wonderful slowmotion pictures we get to see here." --- "And this was so well done - what a proof of agility. Directly up into a Russian split, directly into a sit spin." - "Jason Brown really is the kind of skater who has that little extra - it is difficult to explain in words what it is, but you will feel it yourselves that one watches a skater one is being enthralled. I think this program is good because it.............. shows him from a somewhat new side."

That's basically it.

I like to watch different commentaries as well. So far I've watched Jason's program with Russian, Japanese and English (BESP) commentary. I skip NBC (not a fan). Even when I don't understand the language, I recognize the oohs and aahs of delight and the excitement in their voices when they describe his program. His performance is one for the ages and one I will be revisiting it many, many times.

RE: changes to Jason's skating, here's a quote from Frank Carroll on the work they did this summer from an icenetwork article by Lynn Rutherford (There are also sections on Adam and Tim.):

"I did work on the finish of the jumps, and trying to get him out of things quicker and on axis. We worked on specific technical things, mostly on quickness, and specific things the body has to do on the jumps."

I think that's part of the difference everyone has noticed in his skating. He's always had good air position, but now the speed, flow and confidence have improved.

When I saw him, it was at a men's practice. I think I saw him sitting / hiding on the judges' side wearing a cap.

Doris, I know the guy has this labeled as CBC but it sounds like Mike Mancuso and Michael Weiss to me. Does anyone agree? Some of the comments just remind me of stuff Michael Weiss has said about Jason before (e.g. about the catchfoot camel and height and spring in his jumps). Even if it's not him here, I just want to take a moment to say that Michael Weiss has really really improved his commentary. Remember how much he talked through Jason's Prince short program at Nats and people were tweeting at him to stop? He has really changed what he does and I now find him to be very enjoyable.

Ooh thank you, how did I miss that article?!! I totally agree with you that Frank's polishing has made all the difference, both in the beauty of his line and jumps and the security of his landings.

I totally laughed out loud at his description of Jason as "a wonderful boy, like a puppy, so anxious to please."

I also found it really funny to hear that Kori was totally unaware of the speculation about Jason's coaching change. But I guess that explains why they didn't say anything!

When I saw him, it was at a men's practice. I think I saw him sitting / hiding on the judges' side wearing a cap.

Yes! It was on the second day when I sat behind you AGAIN without realizing it was you - and he was to our left and down a couple of rows with the grey cap!

This is the Universal Sports commentary with Tracy Wilson and Ryan Bradley.

Ooh thank you - this will be fun to listen to! Hopefully it will take away the sour taste of the NBC commentary. It's not that NBC totally spoils stuff, but they often get facts wrong and Tara can just blather on when you want to listen in silence. Johnny was relatively good this time, and I really like when he can explain precisely why a jump went wrong. But if anyone does find the real CBC commentary of Jason's FS (with Carol Lane and Kurt Bbowning) I'd live to hear it.

Okay, I have to say it: a little bird told me Phil Hersh is currently in New Zealand. I am trying to imagine what he would write about Jason's quad. Since he told me me that the one in the practice run through didn't count, I'm guessing he'll say the same thing about the <? I have finally decided that PH is probably like a stern 19th century father who will be thrilled when Jason actually lands the perfect quad, but will continue to be gruff. ;)

Per the Skate America program, the trip to New Zealand is in celebration of Phil's 70th birthday. Happy Birthday to Phil :hb:.

The program lists Phil's most memorable (or something like that) moments in figure skating. IIRC, about half a dozen or so were from non-U.S. skaters. About ten or so were from U.S. skaters.
Jason's Riverdance program at Nats is one of them .

(The link to the program is on the USFS Competition Central page for Skate America. Other stuff about Jason and other skaters is sprinkled throughout the program. The stuff about Hersh is near the very end, IIRC.)

I agree that Phil will be more than thrilled :dance2: when Jason lands a quad that is credited with full rotation.

Congratulations again to Jason and Adam and Shoma :yay:.

Oh wow thank you so much for such a full transcript!! I kept translating into Swedish in my mind; if it's the same commentator I've heard before I feel like I now know exactly what she said

Stupid Finnish ESP commentator (also a judge) was so wowed by Shoma he couldn't focus on Jason at all and then said at the end that Jason's musical interpretation is not even close to Shoma's (which is obviously wrong, lol). I had to watch the B.ESP version a couple of times to get rid of the bad taste in my mouth

ETA: Do you know if there is a way to watch the "Swedish version" of the event online? IIRC TV4 used to show GP competitions (or was it only Euros and Worlds?) on their online viewing service. Right now I could only find some videos from last Worlds. I really like the Swedish commentary, esp. Filip Stiller, since he is very good at pointing out levels and such. And because they were so supportive of Viveca because she was the only Nordic lady skater to make the FS at Worlds :)

Shockingly enough, the Finnish broadcasting corporation ran out of cash and are not showing the GPs at all, not on TV nor online. Stupid, stupid decision - they should have cut out something else this year since Worlds will be in Helsinki.

I don't recall any "maintstream" Swedish TV channel showing any GP - if they ever did, I missed it. In fact, I probably didn't know that such a thing as the GPs existed until 2009, and only found out because I was following Plushy's comeback, and he did Rostelecom. No, I kid you not.;)

I'm not necessarily a fan of the Swedish Eurosport commentators - I'll not digress into why - but certainly they do say the true thing occasionally.:)
