Jason Brown

Thank you to everyone who flagged the music as "Hamilton"

(yes, I know; I've not seen it, nor heard any of the songs, and couldn't identify the tunes for a million dollar bet.:o: Come to think of it, I couldn't do that for any songs from "In the Heights" either. At least I know who Lin-Manuel Miranda is. :laugh2:)

Jason is such a natural for this kind of fluff piece. It is one thing to be an elite athlete. It is another thing to have his interpersonal and communication skills. I don't think it's a coincidence that he was sent.

And yes, that headless scratch spin is Tim Dolensky level:shocked:

This could be me.

If this music hadn't been identified, I probably wouldn't have known it was from Hamilton. The music was very difficult to hear. I thought Jason looked very good. Not talking about the skating really, because there's only so much you can do on that ice, but he looked good in general. I'm still liking that top.

He looked and sounded cold. Maybe wear gloves next time. :)

Yes - he looks fantastic! And that spin, that spin? When he first started doing the headless spin in Writings on the Wall I honestly thought he should change it because it just didn't look that good. So improved!

So did we all catch that it's his dream to skate to something from Hamilton at the Olympics?

What say you - SP or FS?

:)

I think it would be an awesome SP! And that spin is just gorgeous, wow!

Well, we saw no jumps (did 7K deliberately not include it??? Hmm) but otherwise he looks fantastic and confident. He does pick in for the split jump with his right foot and he didn't seem to hesitate or pick "timidly" the way JWeir described it in the FS, so that's good news!

I was actually thinking a Hamilton FS because they will want something that builds and brings the audience to its feet like Riverdance did. One way to overcome someone else's multiple quads! But I don't know the score that well.

A Hamilton program done well is just begging to go viral, honestly.

The score is very hip-hop inspired.

Obviously a different level, but here is Phillip Baker's skate to the Hamilton soundtrack....he's the U.S. Nationals bronze medalist in the intermediate level: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWD6kJVUmRI

OK, I say this hesitantly, but am I the only one concerned to see a lot more Olympic politicking than practicing from Jason (and from 7k on his behalf)?

And, yes, injury... but he was sans boot in a recent 7K pic and 4CC is in *2 weeks* and they were adamant at nats that he'd be 100% for worlds.

I hope I'm over-reacting but it feels to me like they're already angling for the 2014 Ashley Wagner spot next year instead of angling for buckling down and bringing competitive technical content to the fight (perhaps he's on the wrong coast; his jumps never looked better than right after the summer).

I wouldn't read too much in this appearance. It sounds like Jason was asked by USFS to promote the Get Up campaign, which makes sense given his personality and positivity. Given direct flights to NYC, I'd imagine he wouldn't be gone more than 2-3 days.

As for the Olympics, it's natural that TODAY folks would ask him about it. And Jason was very cautious of saying IF I go to the Olympics....he knows it's not a given and he has to put the work in.

I don't think you can say he's "not practicing". That's a ridiculous assumption to make just because he went on the Today show. Max did a show in New York around the New Year and I don't think anyone could accuse him of not practicing.

And if they are starting the Olympic politiking, well, I don't blame them. Everyone's going gaga over Chen and Zhou (even completely handwaving or overlooking Zhou's less than stellar season to date!), it's a good thing for him to remind people he exists. The complete radio silence from Max worries me a lot more than Jason doing promo on TV.

Oh lord, that Jason + Hamilton combo is one of those things I never knew I wanted so much until I saw it!
And it would totally suit him, it's a bit out of the box and right between edgy and beautiful, it could be something to really make him stick out even in big competitions  I mean even more than he already does, of course ;) I don't even care if SP or LP or what songs - though it would even feel a little weird without 'Wait for it'. And I'm sure Lin-Manuel Miranda would love it and would basically help making it go viral

I confess I actually was a little worried at first. I thought he would (should) go to work with Frank Carroll before 4CC and then I saw that he was doing the 7K jump zone thing, which seemed like not enough focus on his training. Then this.

But I thought about it and realized that Kori, Jason and Rohene know exactly what's at stake with Worlds coming up, and I can't see them doing something dumb. They know what he needs to train, and they'll make sure he gets it.

I also think this is a great opportunity for him. He was doing so well this season and had that disaster at NHK and they didn't know why, but he just picked himself up and persevered and after a rough SP did a great FS - yes he blew the last combo and yes the tech was watered down, but still. He really embodies what Get Up is all about. It's interesting - Nathan and Vin ent could have done too but Jason's turn around was more recent than Nathans and more rapid than Vincent's.

So all in all I'm okay with it.

And OT, but I hope Max is the next poster boy for We Get Up. I wanna see him kill that matador program.

Yeah, the Hamilton soundtrack is so diverse! There's a lot of directions he could go with it!

(Also wondering why none of the Ice Dance teams thought of using Hamilton for hip-hop!!)

Also Jason has a background doing musicals. ;)

Ashley was the reigning GPF bronze medalist. So he'll be needing to practice (as I'm sure he is) regardless if he wants to go that route.

Agreed. Ashley wasn't put on that team for no reason or just to stiff Mirai. She was absolutely put on that team because it was the correct decision to make and because she was the form lady of the season. If others have better seasons, Jason isn't going to be able to bump them for no reason.

Actually, I *hope* Jason's team is politicking up a storm and I am glad to see this Today Show gig as some kind of favorable press. Good, Jason's team needs to get out there what he does, Lord knows other teams do it as well. And to my mind, over-do it, and over-do it. But it's the game, and I hope his coaches play it.

The last thing on earth I worry about is whether Jason is working, or working on his jumps, or working on his tech. We here all know that underneath that sunny disposition, he is one steely competitor, and he knows what he needs to do. And we all wish him the best in doing it!:cheer:

Thanks for saying this. I missed that part of @mascol's post the first time round. As to the Olympics, Jason isn't looking to be handed anything he didn't earn. As to Worlds, he's fully aware of what's at stake, and god knows he won't earn any brownie points with USFS if he fails to deliver.
