Jason Brown

Am looking forward to seeing two sublime, beautiful, dazzling performances by Jassssson. :luv17:

Good luck to Jason at the upcoming Worlds in Helsinki! :hap10::hap10:

I think I may need to start following my fellow Philadelphia native, Doug Mattis, on Instagram.

Doug posted on Instagram that he is headed out to 7k to "look after the talented brood at #7K in Colorado Springs for @sk8coachirok while @jasonbskates puts down two memorable beauties in #helsinkiworlds2017 Whoo-Hoo! Go Kori & @roheneward ! Hugs, Jason!" 7k replied that they hoped he beat the weather, cause it doesn't look good.;)

But even more importantly, to me, Doug is a fellow traveler when it comes to beautiful skating. In another post
https://www.instagram.com/p/BSAlNOjhN43/?taken-by=sk8rmattis
he posted a photo of Daisuke Takahashi, who I am also sorry I missed during the "interregnum", and wrote:
"#DaisukeTakahashi says...."Right this way, gentlemen. Time to quad-a-rama, trying to make skating fans forget how my performances made audiences FEEL." #GoodLuckWithThat
#helsinkiworlds2017
#WhatIfQuadsWereBanned
#TheGuyThatWouldWin
#IsDaShizzle
#GiveMeBothPlease
#quads&quality"

*Then* Kori responded

"We got the "feel" part covered @jasonbskates and thx for coming to see and support our magic @skate7k ... @sk8coachirok"

and Doug responded:

"Yes, you do, @sk8coachirok !! One of the most beautiful programs I've ever seen. Truly. I'll keep the fires warm at home for ya! ❤ Best of luck!"

Doug is my man!:hap10::clap:

Thanks for the Doug messages! Hope everyone got to where they needed to go. The roads between Denver and Colorado Springs were closed this morning due to blizzard conditions, but it's not as bad now. Our lights have stopped flickering. :)

Hope you got your supplies in and cooking done last night before the storm hit! My weather app shows weather is supposed to improve today and tomorrow in Denver and CS so hopefully they'll get out and you won't be snowbound long!

@el henry, I love Doug Matthis - do you remember at 2015 Worlds Jason skated after Han Yan and congratulated him for skating well, right before he himself had to Skate? Doug wrote about that on his FB (I think) and what good sportsmanship it showed. I loved that post!

As far as his future, I am listening as I type and Jason answered Dave Lease in the pre-Worlds interview about how he long he would skate: "I can't imagine skating for more than five years" but also "I can't imagine that next year is my last program".

and even answers the "It's a competition/it's a sport" comments.
"I love the sport because of the performance and because of the way I can touch people's hearts.
I know it's a competition, but I want to draw people in. I don't want to lose that."

He also said that his larger purpose, now and also specifically at nationals next year (pre-olympics event, "olympic trials" event), and possibly olympics, is to draw more people into enjoying figure skating. I love that he kept emphasizing these performance values.

Jason.

Regarding the future, I don't see any reason Jason (and Josh for that matter if he stays fit) couldn't go round for 2022. They'll be 27 by then, which is reaching "silver fox" territory but not completely out of the question. (Good god, I just realised Brendan will also be 26-27 by then.) Additionally, we have in the past seen mass technical dropoffs after Olympic years before. SLC and Torino spring to mind, even Vancouver. Hanyu, Chan, Fernandez, Voronov - these guys will all surely be gone within the year after 2018. Plus, the new regs will come into force with a shorter FS and one less jumping pass, which could favour Jason.

I am struggling a little with the concept that Jason might ever be a silver fox of the field though  he will always and forever be that sweet boy for me.

It is really weird to hear people call him a veteran! And weirder still to hear him call himself a whippersnapper. But quite interesting actually to hear him talk about getting used to having an adult body.

But cmon Karne, he said he wants to try a quad flip - I thought you'd have a comment on that! Wouldn't it be ironic if it was easier than toe?

 Yes, I knew I'd come in here for a reason other than to talk about the future!

I have said for yonks that he should try the 4F. His 3F is just so nice.

Right I know, that's why I thought of you! Anyway, should be interesting to see what he ends up doing at Worlds - he was quite non-committal.

But as I've been saying for the last few comps, just two clean programs, please, so I can watch them repeatedly without averting my eyes!

Yikes that needed editing.

this is old news, and maybe even at the beginning of this thread, but I can't resist sharing

was looking for some videos of my first love :luv17: today and up came a November 2013 article about Jason's SP at (then) TEB.

"With one edge only, Brown would have crossed the ice in pure delight tonight, so much energy he displayed. Throughout his short program, he showed that rare talent to go to the end of every one of his movements, offering his whole body possibilities at each step. He mastered his body the way Toller Cranston used to, and his inspired joy was reminiscent of Janet Lynn's."

Combining my first uber and my latest uber:yes2: (and actually, I really started with Janet, although quickly moved to men).

Getting psyched for Helsinki:hap10:

Wow, what a compliment! Janet Lynn may be my all-time favorite skater, so the author pretty much slayed me with that comparison! Of course I had to watch the TEB SP after reading this. That was skated with so much confidence. ❤️

Great find, el henry!

For reference, Todd Eldredge was 30 in Salt Lake City in 2002. Michael Weiss almost made a 3rd Olympic team in 2006 and I think he was 29. Jeremy Abbott was 28 in Sochi in 2014. Heck, I think Weiss had kids in elementary school by the time 2006 came around.

"Silver Fox" territory? I think it will determine on their attitude. I don't remember Eldredge, Weiss, or Abbott talking about their age near as much as Adam Rippon did starting a couple of seasons ago. Max Aaron hasn't talked about "feeling old" and I think he is 25.

I don't see Jason having a "I'm so old!" attitude if he sticks around. Not sure about Joshua.

I wouldn't bet on this. Especially considering skaters like Nathan Chen and Vincent Zhou. Plus, I would be surprised if Hanyu retired - he is also still decently young.

Interesting - this will certainly help, especially if Jason has clean jumps in the SP and LP.

I was thinking of Jeremy when I heard Jason make his comments; yes, Jason would be younger (maybe same age?) in 2022 than Jeremy was in 2018. Selfishly, I would love and adore  seeing Jason skate another quad (as in four years, and not the gol-darned jump;) ).

But one of the things I admire so much about Jason is level-headed attitude to *life*, not just to skating. He did emphasize in the pre-Worlds interview that skating was a part of his life now, but it was not his life, period, and that he was planning for life after skating. He pointed out that he graduated from a public high school, which until I read more about these kids, I didn't realize what an outlier (and IMHO, how commendable an outlier) that was.

Having relatively recently done the retirement thing, I get that it's not easy. It has to be even less easy when you're a young adult with a passion. But sometimes, it's the bravest and best choice, and I get the very distinct impression, when it is the best choice for Jason, he will make it.

And I will be verklempt.:sad21:

Sorry to do the dreaded double post, but I didn't see this until later, and it's not really relevant enough to edit the previous thread:

Can some of our Japanese-speaking friends tell us if this tweet means that Dice said nice things about Jason:

https://twitter.com/JasonBrownFP/status/846156706883256320

Twitter translate: "Daisuke Takahashi, world men's review Jason that so me compliments! Piano lessons and programs like it 😊 I read a nice article so ❤ " and a link to the article in Japanese.

I just think that would be so cool after Doug Mattis' IG post:biggrin:
